The Flyers didn't have an extension in place with Pronger when the deal was made, they worked out an extension shortly after the trade. That is not the same as a sign and trade, there was no guarantee that Pronger would extend when the trade was made.

Flyers Acquire Chris Pronger

No general manager would trade that package without having inside knowledge that he would retain the player.

Please explain how this trade sets them back 5 years.
Giving up the equivelent of 4 1st round picks & a usable vet in MacDonald would tend to do that. For that offer Ottawa would trade Karlsson or Hex could turn that into 2 top pending RFAs in more needed spots.
Especially when in today's NHL you need young, cost controlled players like Sanheim/Myers, Rubtsov & whoever we pick with those 2 1st rounders this year.
Doughty is going UFA in a year, gets paid 7 million & you can bet he's not taking a discount after 1 year with a new team.
It's a great deal for LA as they move their rebuild up fast.

Again, explain how the deal sets the Flyers back for 5 years. They’d be adding a number 1 defenseman, who many consider the best in the sport, for the next 8 years.

The Flyers would still have enough money to keep Giroux, Voracek, Couturier, Patrick, Konecny, Provorov, and Ghost. Their goaltending will be very cheap moving forward with Hart.

They’d still have a large quantity of prospects close to jumping up and can replace most of what they give up in that deal by moving Simmonds or drafting players in rounds 2-7. They also have first round picks for the next “5 years”.

Sure, if Hextall made this move 3-4 years ago, then I’d agree it would have been the wrong move. You think they’d be a worse team with Doughty over the next 5 years than if they had Sanheim, Rubtsov, and 2 1st round picks? Other than Sanheim, there’s a good chance those other assets wouldn’t become significant contributors until Giroux’s contract is up.

Given how the last few years went in LA and with most of their core hitting 30, Doughty staying doesn’t seem as much of a lock. With the assets Philadelphia holds, where they’re trending, and the history between Hextall/Lombardi and Doughty/Los Angeles, it seems like a perfect fit.

Travis Sanheim/Phil Myers+St. Louis 1st+Philadelphia 1st+German Rubtsov+Andrew MacDonald for Drew Doughty.

LOL at the Kings wanted anything to do with that pilon in MacDonald.

I believe that would be the cap dump in the deal. It goes along with the 2 1sts. Like how the Flyers traded Brayden Schenn for 2 1sts and took Jori Lehtera off of St. Louis's hands.
