Am I right to assume that the voting concluded prior to the playoffs?

If so, that makes Dorion being nominated a lot more interesting.

I'd like to know that, as well. We finished fairly high, but no one pegged us to beat Boston, either.

This nomination feels like it's a year too early.

Didn't you blame a goal against in the Bruins series against Dorion's asset management?

Unbelievable

I might have mentioned something along those lines when Stafford scored against us for the Bruins, given that he was acquired for a 6th while Dorion was stumbling over himself to overpay for comparable wingers in Burrows and Stafford.

So sort of, yeah.

Congrats, not a fan of the Burrows trade, but c'est la vie. We're in the ECF, can't worry about that.

But should our post-season success be attributed to Dorion?

The guys Dorion acquired this year:

Brassard: 14GP-3G-6A-9P
Burrows: 14GP-0G-4A-4P
Stalberg: 12GP-0G-2A-2P
Pyatt: 9GP-0G-1A-1P
Wingels: 7GP-0G-0A-0P
-------------------------------
Total: 56GP-3G-13A-16P

Only one of those guys has really made a difference in the playoffs, and that has been Brassard, who was excellent in the series against the Bruins but pretty much invisible against the Rangers and Penguins (thus far). When you consider that Zibanejad, the guy Dorion gave up to get Brassard, led the Rangers in points with 9 in only 12 games, the argument that Dorion's player acquisitions have made a significant difference in our post-season run pretty much falls apart.

The one thing Dorion did this year that has had a direct impact on our playoff success was hiring Boucher, which is looking like a very astute move on his part. While I still think Boudreau is a better coach in a vacuum (having the highest winning percentage of any coach in history and all), Boucher is looking like the better fit for this hockey team and Dorion deserves a ton of credit for hiring him. Still, don't think credit for our post-season success should go to Dorion so much as Boucher.

Boucher has the Sens make the ecf in his first season as coach.

Dorion gets nominated for Gm of the year award in his first season as gm.

What is next?

But...but....Burrows for Dahlen is Erat for Forsberg 2.0 isn't it?......:)

Good for him. Getting Boucher has been his biggest move thus far.

Brass is tied for second in scoring among Senators forwards these playoffs.

Using production as a metric to measure how good Stalberg, Wingels, and Pyatt are is ignorant since they weren't acquired with the intention of being high end producers. They are bottom 6 players/PK specialists.

Burrows is the only player on that list whose lack of production could be considered a disappointment given he was expected to play a big middle 6 type role with the team.

Forsberg for Erat was hyperbole but giving up Dahlen for Burrows wasn't a good trade at the time. The principle behind the deal was solid, but unless there is something we don't know and the Senators had reason to believe that there was something faulty about Dahlen's supposedly great +1 year, Dorion overpaid.

If we want to measure it in hindsight, yeah of course I'd be okay with the Senators doing that trade again because we're in the conference final with a realistic shot at playing for the Stanley Cup. But once you start judging trades with hindsight, it gets kinda tricky to be fair about them.

If the Sens win the Cup, it would really be like for Anaheim in 2007, after Bryan Murray built a solid foundation, someone came in to finish the job.

But I thought that he singlehandedly ruined our future by trading Zibanejad and Dahlen? Then he let Puempel go for nothing...

He would have to win the cup and the draft lottery at this point for me to start trusting his judgement.

The NHL clearly don't know what they are talking about if they are nominating a GM (another) who can't asset manage to save his life!

Zibanejad was first in scoring among Rangers forwards these playoffs, and has a higher PPG than Brassard.

You have to consider that we didn't add Brassard without losing anything from our roster. I see little evidence that trading Brassard for Zibanejad has resulted in increased playoff success, given that Zibanejad has produced at a higher rate through both the regular season and the playoffs.

Using production as a metric to measure how good Stalberg, Wingels, and Pyatt are is ignorant since they weren't acquired with the intention of being high end producers. They are bottom 6 players/PK specialists.

That is true. Those guys have been good defensively, but not a single goal in a combined 28 games is disappointing nonetheless.

Again, I don't see the argument that those guys have significantly influenced our playoff success. They've been good defensively, but haven't scored at all. They haven't hurt us, but they haven't helped us all that much either.

Burrows is the only player on that list whose lack of production could be considered a disappointment given he was expected to play a big middle 6 type role with the team.

0 goals and 3 points in 28 combined games is disappointing for any Senator not named Neil, Kelly or Borowiecki.

0 goals and 4 points in 14 games for Burrows is extremely disappointing, given that he's already 36 and it's all downhill from here. He's been a complete non-factor through the first 14 games, besides a good chip out of the zone on Pageau's OT winner.

If the Sens win the Cup, it would really be like for Anaheim in 2007, after Bryan Murray built a solid foundation, someone came in to finish the job.

Dorion's additions to this 2017 Sens include Brassard, Burrows, Stalberg and Pyatt

Burke's additions to the 2007 Ducks include Selanne, Pronger, Niedermayer and Beauchemin

The situations aren't even remotely comparable. Too bad we didn't have Burke in the organization though. I agree with you there at least.

Him getting nominated doesn't change the fact it was a bad value-for-value deal.

Of course, if we win the Cup none of this will matter.

That is true. I'm also not a fan of the value the Sens gave up to get Burrows. On the radio in Vancouver most people were just hoping for a 3rd/4th rounder for Burrows and they felt like they hit a home run value wise with Jonathan Dahlen, which they probably did.

I was taking note at the hyperbole that the deal was immediately named Erat for Forsberg 2.0 on these boards.

Oh hey, look: it's all the same arguments we had about our trade deadline acquisitions, made by the same people who posited them two and a half months ago... the sequel! Round 2! Or is that 5 at this point?

Congrats on the nomination, Pierre.

Has burrows even done anything against rangers or pens? Wasnt this guy aquired for a cup run. If ottawa dont win the cup it will look bad next season when burrows is yet another year older while dahlen will get a shot in vancouver.

you just can't help yourself can you Hale. our GM is nominated for an award by his peers and here you are trying to establish that he's not worthy. There must be a permanent thunder shower that follows you around. I'm not even going to attempt to rationalize it, my ability to put a positive spin on this is simply not worthy.

I don't understand the blow back from the Brassard and Burrows trade, the argument is something along the lines of 'well, we COULD of been good in the future' but we ARE good now.

Does anyone honestly believe if you took out Brassard and replaced him with Zibby we would be where we are?. And instead of Burrows for Dahlen we kept Dahlen and traded a 5th round pick for a plAyer like Chiasson we would be where we are?

I don't get the argument against the fact that Dorion made the team good, and the counter argument is 'well, we ALSO MAYBE could of been good in the future' - just a rational I don't get. Let's waste another 200 games of Erik Karlsson career until this paper plan we have works out perfectly without injury, cap trouble or trade requests. Don't get it.

Sometimes I forget that stats are the only way to judge a trade and the value a player has to a team. Thank you for reminding me that things like chemistry with linemates means nothing. I mean, Zib had chemistry with absolutely no one on the Sens, but that means nothing because of STATS! ALL THE STATS! ONLY THE STATS!

As for the Dorion stuff, good on him. He came into the season and set lofty goals that most people thought were nothing more than a pipe dream and he's met them.

Also, no one mentioning the Condon trade? That was arguably his best acquisition this season.
