This is what just about all Jackets fans will say. "Trade someone else, not Gavrikov".

Contrast that with the Habs fans attitudes on Domi -- "Get something for him quick".
Jacket fans. We'll give you Gavrikov for Domi. He's worth it. Ah come on please.
Hab fans. Go away with your putrid offer.

Gavrikov for Domi is laughable. How about Lehkonen for J Anderson? Get something for JA while you can! ;)

It's not a Jackets fans offer. I'm only here because I'm one of apparently three posters in the thread who can actually describe Gavrikov accurately.

Independent from this trade offer, I think folks might want to get used to seeing Gavrikov's name on this board for a little while. He's exactly that kind of sneaky-semi-known up-and-comer that a lot of fans will have their eyes on. And they'll look at the Columbus D and hope that a surplus springs him free.

Let's see what contract he gets too. Depending on how that goes, it could amplify his cult status even further as a sought-after commodity around here.

I'm guessing Columbus fans are already sold on protecting Jones-Werenski-Gavrikov as the first 3 choices for the Seattle draft. Past that, do you guys talk about protecting 4, or what you'll do with Savard or Murray, sign them, expose them, what? Because Savard and Murray seem like maybe the ones that other teams might be more likely to actually come away with in any trade scenarios? :dunno:

That's a pretty ridiculous take, which I would assume is based on bored Habs fans, dreaming up trade scenarios during a lockdown. It's not reality.

Gavrikov is good and has potential, but he's still fairly unproven. I think you would have to attach another decent asset to him (maybe Josh Anderson, depending on his situation) to get close to Domi's value, even after a down year.

Gavrikov + Anderson vs Domi + small add?

You've got it figured out as well as we have. Werenski-Jones-Gavrikov all get protected. Some big decisions to be made with Savard and Murray. Realistically the D is going to get too expensive, so one of them has to go. It might not be a trade though. I could be that they both just get exposed and let Seattle take one. Trading one and protecting 4 just means that Seattle takes another player, so now you've lost two players. So unless the trade offers are great it might be better to just lose one D straight up to Seattle.

Correct

Depends on the forward situation but they probably get exposed

Especially with Peeke in the system as a RHD.

The Jackets are pretty high on Texier taking over at 2C so I'm not sure if Domi is a target for them. Personally I love Domi so I'd be almost interested in this deal. I think it's just not great value for Columbus. You could get a filler 2C (read: not a 25 year old with possible upside like Domi) with either Gavrikov or Anderson as a base. Using both of them when you're not sure you need a 2C long term? It doesn't seem smart. Personally I think if Montreal's add was a couple of 2020 2nd rounders that would be big for Columbus, they have nothing in that draft range.

I think this deal actually makes some sense for Montreal. On HF nobody really knows Gavrikov yet but he's a great shutdown defender and good with the puck. He reminds me of Ekholm circa 2016. Montreal can get a bigger name back for Domi but I think Gavrikov would be a fitting building block piece for the Habs.

So you're saying that gavrikov is a good bet for a buy low option and that we should overpay to buy low on him?

Habs need a top-4 puck moving point producing LHD. Gavrikov is not that.

There’s no realistic add to Gavrikov that would entice me to pull the plug on Domi. He’s going to be 25 when the season start and just started to show some promises that he might be capable of handling top 4 minutes long term. He’s simply not an realistic target for a guy like Domi.

But even if you’re 25, you’re going against two very high ceiling center coming up and someone who’s grossly underrated in Danault. Long term, Domi will get pushed to LW, not because he’s not a good C but because we won’t have the roster spot at C for him. The other issue is Domi want to play at C and we may just not have the roster spot for him at C in a year or two.

Gavrikov may become a good NHL D. I don’t know much about him either but when you look at the list of D that were offered for Domi: Hanifin (turned down), Nurse (turned down), Dumba (Maybe), Brodin (Maybe if signed) you have to understand that Gavrikov does not move the needle... at all.
That makes sense to me as y'all's long term plan. If I were a Habs fan and/or concerned about the welfare of that team, tho, I'd be inclined to argue in favor of retaining Domi, if only because I worry about penciling in prospects like that. Things could still somehow go wrong with Suzuki or Kotka, and it's nice to have insurance if possible. Trade him when he's getting moved over, not before. (It's why, for example, I keep looking for good #2Cs on here despite Texier and Foudy showing a lot of promise.)

Of course, 1) that perspective doesn't potentially benefit MY team ;) and 2) when there's significant needs (LD to play with Petry or Weber) it's understandably tempting to kill two birds with one stone.

* * *
But, as mentioned, I personally would keep Domi for another year to see what we have.
Yeah, I'd feel the same way if I was in that position.

But I'm not in that position; I'm a Jackets fan. So GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE. ;)

No, I'm saying he'd be a fitting piece in Montreal. Immediately top LHD in Montreal and has upside to be an Ekholm style #2D. He's not far from that level now. Though if I'm Montreal I definitely look to exploit Domi's bigger "name value". Maybe the Habs can get better trade value elsewhere. At the end of the day GM's will be focused on finding the best player among those that fit.

I thought the idea was to have a stabilizer to work alongside Petry, since he already has that skillset. Or are y'all thinking Petry is getting old and want him to be partnered with his eventual replacement, or something?

Ultimately we need a Krug type who can run the PP and move the puck quickly. What we don’t need is more Chiarot type dman which is effectively the mold of Gavrikov. Romanov will hopefully become a hybrid pmd who can defend and will be a stabilizing force. But a pmd PP specialist is what we need.

Petry is likely gone after next season and will leave a hole in the pmd category.

Well since you know exactly what Gavrikov is than you also must know he hasn't near the value that it would take to get Domi.

No that happened when he was in the KHL. He was projected as a safe bet for middle pair D. This year he showed that projection might have been too low. He and Savard crushed second pair.

That description might fit Nutivaara - or, at least, the Nutivaara of seasons before this one, since he also had a bit of a down year. He's not at Krug's level, admittedly, but he at least possesses that skillset.

Nuti doesn’t move the needle, especially if we are sacrificing Domi. I would rather trade picks for Dunn or at worst case Leddy to get a more proven and established commodity.

from Habs POV, why in the work would we trade Domi for lesser pieces?

then pony up equal value for something the Habs need as opposed to a collection of lesser pieces and scraps. ;)
I'm a bit undecided as to which followup is more appropriate at this juncture - You Overrate Your Player So He's Not Worth It So Give Him To Us, or You Just Hate Us And Our Players And Those Grapes Are Probably Sour Anyways. :D
