Saw some good things from this team tonight. And the last couple of nights. Its obvious that someone (Botts) has lit a fire under some asses because they are no longer complacent and just going thru the motions.

However, the skill and talent holes remain to be filled so keep taking those phone calls Botts.

Second period was fun and good all around. First period was slow. Third period they were sitting back for the first ten, then almost let the team come back with under 2 min.

Ottawa is even a slower team than us though and that’s bad. They only have one forward on a RFA at the end of their contract..... they’re in really really bad shape.

But Kane away from Eichel meant everything. Rodrigues line wasn’t hemmed in too often and actually had some decent 3v2s that they managed to flub, but at least had. For all the crap Nolan gets, he made hits start to finish that set the tone and wasn’t a defensive liability (barring penalty).

The effort level has been more consistent throughout the lineup and there is noticeably less head-hanging. People seem to be engaged. Guys who have rotated out have returned fired up. The newbies have all provided energy of one variety or another. Finding another Scandella-esque defenseman could really boost things: less of McCabe-Bogosian would be a good thing. But seeing some adjustment by the coaching staff and seeing it reap some benefits is a little heartening. Signs of life on the PP and Lehner making a lot of saves... all good things.

They're still not respectable, but winning is certainly more entertaining.

Only defenseman I saw issues with was McCabe, though he managed to bail himself out of them. It’s ok, we’ve got Guhle. 3rd pairing Gorges ain’t a problem.

Remember that small contingent that wanted to trade for Duchene?
Talented but with all the baggage not worth it. He’s their Kane. Really curious to see what Kane gets when he’s been better than Duchene after all the Duchene got Colorado.

First game in a while where just about everyone out there looked like they cared. Still a little sloppy and they have plenty of things to be working on, but effort goes a long way. Good win.

ERod adds a lot to this lineup from a speed, smarts, skill standpoint. I'd like to see him stapled to Eichel's RW for a 10 game stretch and see if the chemistry from college returns. He is a perfect winger for Jack, with the speed and smarts to play off him.

While I am happy we won, the first period had quite a few Keystone Kops moments, totally unbecoming a professional sports team. We definitely have turned up the effort, I believe the main reason we won tonight is because Ott played poorly. Glad we are making babysteps in the right direction, but when we run against a stretch of good teams, the losses will pile back up, and many will pull their hair out wondering what happened to this team.

I still do not understand the Sabres scheme in front of their net by the defensemen. Like... not at all.

You don’t enjoy the “we’ll let you stand in front of our goalie, and we will stand a sticks length away and give you a free 2nd chance” style defense?

Team as a whole does that too often. Lehner gave up a rebound that McCabe recovered and we had 3 players all standing still in front of Lehner not moving for at least 2-3 seconds, eventually McCabe coughed the puck up because he had nowhere to go with it.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Flyers are on a 4 game win streak currently. Sabres come back to earth this Thursday.

P.S. I hate the Flyers and always will.
