I would bet Ray doesn't have an internal cap

The team stays at some of the nicer hotels on the road, mostly Ritz Carlton's in the cities that have them. That's a 5 star hotel. A lot of teams only stay in 4 star hotels. There are some NHL cities that also might not have 5 star hotels and the hotels have to allow teams to stay there. There's a lot of logistics with team meals, as well as using the conference room for team meetings and just the spectacle of having a hockey/major pro sports team in your hotel that some hotels might not be into having.

They've also went out of their way to spend money, like the new scoreboard/tron that they bought to replace that terrible ancient 10 year old one. That thing cost not too much less than the team payroll this season.

And not to mention, if you're looking to save money, you don't hire Ray Shero as your GM, who probably commands more money than Don Waddell, Pierre Dorion or some bum. I would bet Shero was given a top 7-ish annual salary right off the bat when we brought him in.

Deja Vu. Could've sworn I read the same exact post in another thread......

are we really talking about hotels and the jumbotron???

he can spend to the cap limit, for players, if he wants..... everything you just mentioned has nothing to do with it.

im on ur side btw.....

But if he can't spend to the cap, it means we have an internal budget, which means the owners are cheap tightwads, thus we'd be staying at cheaper lodging options, as well as cutting corners and not throwing money away on a $32 million dollar jumbotron to replace one that was perfectly fine and only 10 years old.

There isn't proof to an internal cap one way or the other at this point. However, this off-season should be more telling in that area given our potential to take a big step in the right direction and with plenty of cap room to work with.

Spending to spend is silly though so if there's no big money spent I still don't see it as a possible internal budget.

I don't think there's an internal cap, I think Shero is just spending wisely. We shouldn't be signing guys entering their 30's to long term deals, or just throwing money at our problems, because that rarely ever works. Plus, what big name free agents have really been available recently? Shattenkirk is the only guy I can think of, and we were very much in on him last summer.

Seems like the story is that Mascherin wasn't invited to their camp and instead was told to stay home to recuperate from an injury. And otherwise he was also offended that he wasn't offered a contract earlier and/or there hadn't been much contact with Florida.

Bob McKenzie mentioned that Florida offered him an ELC along the lines of Alex DeBrincat who went right after Mascherin in the draft. Not sure where he'd fit here though, but I suppose if you view him more as an asset, then it might make sense to buy low.

yeah, the injury stuff is what i saw too, i just figured there had to be more to the story. i just don't see anyone we would pick in the 4th+ rounds with a higher upside. i'd do it

This is exactly right. Don't confuse Shero's unwillingness to spend frivolously as an inability to do so.

He’ll have to change his work ethic away from the puck for that upside to matter.

But his shot is elite and playmaking is underrated.

assuming he doesn't get a contract, he would be re-entered into the draft, right? im not 100% clear on how that works

"The Devils spent $67 million in salary this year, but have been cleared to spend to the cap next season. According to CapFriendly, the Devils enter the offseason with just shy of $20 million in cap space, if the salary cap remains at $75 million."

"...So we want to do that the right way. Nothing has changed since Day 1 for me when they gave me this green light."

What exactly is unclear about that article? Seems to be perfect proof that Shero now (or had) has permission to spend to the cap... why are people saying it is unclear?

Some want to believe what they want to believe.
Others want to spend to the cap no matter what, and justify not spending to it by believing there's an internal cap.

If Hall puts up another 90+ year he's around 11 per I think. My dream is he takes 9 per for 8 cause its his number and he so badly wants to win now that he got a taste of the playoffs.

Realistically he could get 11x8. Three 80+/two 90+ seasons is better than Tavares and FAR better than Eichel/Laine/Matthews types, granted theyre younger but thatd only mean Hall should make even more IMO.

if hall is legit interested in winning and enjoys this franchise as much as he says then he will take a stamkos type discount and stay here to let the team be competitive.

I don't think he'd get a $88,000,000 contract. I mean it'll be a big one but that's a lot more than i think it'll be. I can see a 8.5 or 9 for 7 or 8 years but 11 per? Don't see that.

How many players take this discount? Just because Marty Brodeur and Steven Stamkos did it doesn’t mean we should expect every player to do it. Toews and Kane sure didn’t, Toews especially. And with the recapture penalties and front loaded contracts being a thing of the past we don’t see “Discounts” like Luongo, Hossa and Upchuk anymore.

The discount is going to be like $10 million instead of $11 and Shero would have zero problems with it.

Hall is going to get paid and deservingly so.

This is also how it works. You want a superstar? Need to be ready to pay him superstar money.
