Well there is zero situation where Detroit gets "zilch" so save us the hyperbole.
Yeah that's not even remotely true IMO. In the 2012 draft, another 'weak draft', picking in the top 10 vs outside of it made a
HUGE difference in who was available.
The top 10 included Murray, Galchenyuk, Rielly, Lindholm, Dumba, and Trouba.
Outside the top 10? You have Forsberg at 11 and it pretty well ends there as far as really high value players. Hertl at 17 and a couple other players a tier lower than the above are sprinkled throughout the rest of the 1st round.
In other words, over 50% of the players chosen in the top 10 in that 'weak' draft have turned out to be really, really good players. It becomes a total crapshoot once you leave the top 10. At this point, this team winning games is totally counter-productive.
Guys playing hard benefits the organization. I also have full confidence that they can grab a good contributing player between spots 6-12
Absolutely, no disagreement here. The problem is that there is not enough talent on this team to make a real difference, no matter how 'hard' the players play.
And that's beside the point. Holland doesn't 'play hard'. He doesn't play at all, he's the GM. It's not up to the players to tank, who would ever suggest that? Why would players throw games and damage their career prospects just to help the team get a better draft pick? It's not up to them, their job is to go out and give it their all every night. It's up to Holland to recognize his roster is giving everything it has and it's not nearly enough.
So it's Holland's job to tank. Or he can continue trying to squeeze blood from a stone like he has been for years, I'm sure the tipping point is just round the corner...
