The players vote on this shit. The PLAYERS agree to this. It's not us that's doing it.

Without the CBA, the league doesn't exist. Hockey, sad as it is to say, is a pretty niche major sport. Without the guardrails that you hate so damn much, the players will make no money. The league has the cap for cost certainty. If the CBA goes bye bye, so does the cap. And without the cap, you're signing the death warrant of a third or more of the league.
I'm not opposed to the cap though.

Big fan of what Debrincat has done. So crazy that all of Detroit media were like "NOOO don't trade for that guy, he's too short and not playing with Patrick Kane to be any good".

I was one of the people that didn't want him. Now, I am happily eating plates full of crow.

Hockey is easily the most unpredictable sport, thus making it the best.

Not sure that's true. He was pretty much in between for 82 games with Ottawa last year.

As a SENS fan though it's nice to see a rival teams' star struggling. Don't really care about the trade history, more concerned with Detroit not accumulating points.

Detroit to DC
I expect regression, but as of today Boston and Detroit are first and second in the Atlantic division respectively. Playoff results outstanding, Detroit would have the option to send either Boston’s pick (scheduled for #30th overall) or Detroit’s (scheduled for #26th overall).

Lotta hockey left but it seems likely that the most expensive asset Detroit burns in this deal is a mid-20s to low-30s selection.

I was nervous about that because I did not expect Detroit to be this good (We'll see if it sticks) and figured Boston was gonna fall off with their retirements and departures.

Not looking good right now for OTT. Both teams need to absolutely fall off over the next 55 games for that pick to be in a good spot.

Wasn't kubalik supposed to take over dbc's role seamlessly or something...
Kubalik has 1 less goal this season than DeBrincat had in his first 20 as a Senator. That being said, nobody was saying Kubalik = DeBrincat. Everyone knows DeBrincat is better, he just didn’t want to be here. Tarasenko was brought in more so to fill his void.

People focus too hard on the idea of a team winning and losing a trade.

This wasn't a dynamic where Ottawa could have kept Debrincat, but they chose Kubalik and a late 1st over him. This was a dynamic where Debrincat had one foot out the door, and he would only sign with one team. Ottawa was not in a position to keep him through the season without it becoming a distraction. The salary cap made it difficult to move players. Debrincat refusing to sign anywhere but Detroit made it difficult to create a market for him.

The return on paper is bad, but when you consider the realities of the situation, none of this should be a shock. Kubalik was a throw in, who became less relevant as soon as the team signed Tarasenko. The Garrioch media spin was that he was the centrepiece of the trade, and a top 6 forward.

Kubalik is actually pretty capable of being a top 6 forward, and he has done it in the past, too. The Sens don't use him in that way, though.

Kubalik has only really been a top 6 forward on bad teams, though (even the 19-20 Blackhawks would have clearly missed the playoffs without the covid procedure). I think that point matters...Kubalik isn't a guy that contending teams would be itching to add to their top 6, and he isn't really the type of player who thrives in a bottom 6 role either.
