Good news for the Danish League as another club joins in.
Gentofte Stars is back as a professional club after being amateur the last 15 years (last season as pro club was 1998-99).
So the league will have 10 teams next season.
5 from Jylland (Jutland). SønderjydskE, Herning, Frederikshavn, Aalborg, Esbjerg.
1 from Fyn (Funen). Odense.
4 from Sjælland (Zealand), though all from Copenhagen greater area. Rødovre, Herlev, Rungsted, Gentofte.

Fantastic result for SønderjydskE in the Champions Hockey League.

They were in the lead 3-0 after first period against Finnish IFK Helsinki, but lost 4-5 after penalty shootout. [they were 1 minute from the win, when the finns equalized to 4-4]
Still for a Danish league club to take a point against a finnish team is hugely surprising.

05:13 1-0 Anders Overmark (Lykkeskov, Lund)
07:10 2-0 Patrick Asselin (Bødker) PP
17:16 3-0 Patrick Asselin (Quirk, Spelling) PP
21:39 3-1 Jasse Ikonen (Nykopp) SH
24:28 4-1 Kim Lykkeskov (Dau)
30:23 4-2 Lauri Taipalus (Leino) PP
40:18 4-3 Robert Leino (Soderholm, Husso) PP
59:02 4-4 Lauri Taipalus (Leino)
Pen 4-5 Tomas Zaborsky

Late update, but SønderjydskE lost as expected their second match in CHL against Skellefteå AIK with 1-4.

I really cannot stand Tyler Gotto so much so that it goes over my sympathy for sonderjyske, but even I have been rooting for Them.. Good showings so far. Was expecting major losses.

...and Kristian Mohr suspended for 4 games for doing this with 1 minute left. :shakehead

Yeah that is one nasty knee tackle.

I also root for the lone Danish team in the CHL and so far they have really surprised.
Only 1-4 loss to the Swedish Champions and getting a point (and close to winning) against a Finnish team (HIFK) is much more than counted for.

One of the brave 318 spectators attending !

Isn't it 2 cup matches one home and one away?

Anyway mighty SønderjydskE had a really tough challenge playing the Swedish champions Skellefteå in Sweden.
They did surprisingly well only being behind 1-2 until 54 min and losing 1-4 to an empty netter.

So two times 4-1 losses against a team from a far far stronger league. So it looks like they could be unstoppable in the Danish league this season.

Edit: My mistake. First from the quarterfinals will it be 2 matches. So congratulation with meeting SønderjydskE (12-13th September) while they probably have all their focus on the CHL. So definitely a chance there.
When the CHL is finished then they will be very hard to cope with.

Auch. The second match against Helsinki IFK went pretty catastrophic for SønderjydskE.
Apparently the Finns had decided to teach them a lesson. Defeat 10-1.

Edit: 7-0 sonderjyske :( 9-2 aggregate.

And what a crazy second round that was:

Results:
SønderjydskE - Herlev: 7-0 [shots 26-7; SønderjydskE pulled themselves together]
Aggregate: 7-2

Herning - Odense: 8-1 [shots 28-23, wow what a historic comeback and what happened to Odense?]
Aggregate 10-9 [I say it again, insane 2-8, 8-1 in two matches]

Frederikshavn - Aalborg: 2-3 [shots 32-25]
Aggregate: 4-5 [two very close matches]

Rødovre - Rungsted: 3-4 [shots 36-32, surprisingly tough for Rødovre]
Aggregate 9-8

So it was fun while it lasted for Herlev, the other three matches were really nail biters.
So SønderjydskE, Herning, Aalborg and Rødovre in the semis.

Yeah it is. So SønderjydskE actually managed to get 3rd in the group and beside the one game being slaughtered against HIFK they have surpassed all expectation.

Even more impressive they turned a 3-1 to a 3-4 away win in the last period.

Very much so. At least this shows that there is merit to having a danish league in the champions league after all.

Danish league so far after two rounds has been full of surprises:

1st round was expected though surprise that Gentofte got a point against Aalborg:
Rødovre - Herlev: 3-1
SønderjydskE - Odense: 5-2

Aalborg, Frederikshavn, Gentofte & Herning have 4 points in the lead.
SønderjydskE, Odense, Rødovre & Rungsted with 3 points.

Herlev was cheated for a goal to 3-2 in regulation, overall bad reffing. And a very ineffective herlev team once again.

Herlev was cheated for a goal to 3-2 in regulation, overall bad reffing. And a very ineffective herlev team once again.

So since you watch the Herlev games what is your opinions so far of the players?
It seems that Antti Hölli is the star player so far (no wonder since he actually came from Ilves), but after that forward skills wears off drastically.....? Only 9 goals in 5 matches.

You should expect a little more from the young guns (Nicky Kisum, Jonas Sass, Sebastian Svendsen, Dallas Maxwell) than they have showed so far.
The two Canadians forwards that came from the English league (Doucet, Leinweber) doesn't really seem like an import upgrade yet.
Trevor Koenig hasn't seem to steal games yet as he did last year in goal.
The defense has only allowed 13 goals, so they have been playing to a good standard (same as Herning by the way).
