Not trading a core piece in Toews for a 3C who is a UFA in 3-4 months and a 3rd/4th line winger who isn't even an upgrade on what the Avs already have.

Graves could be had, but Avs also need a defenseman for expansion draft, and that's Graves. EJ waives his NMC, Makar/Girard/Toews are protected, and Byram is exempt.

Why is EJ waiving tho? Does he has a reason to do so? Or that's just a wishful thinking from Avs fans in order not to losr one of the 3 other guys?

If he doesn’t I think the Avs buy him out or protect 8 instead of 7-3.

So what you are saying is... Sakic going to go down, and say

"EJ, either you waive, or we buy out your contract."

And EJ will willingly waive? Yah not happening

Just ignore the second part of my reply lmao. I laid out the two more likely options than Toews or one of the other two studs being exposed. So let me reiterate if they do not buyout EJ they will protect 8 instead of 7-3.

So

Mack
Landeskog
Raantanen
Kadri

Ej
Toews
Girard
Makar

Grubauer

Makes sense, even tho losing Saad would hurt

What's the upside for EJ to force Sakic to make that decision? Seems like a great way to get bought out and have his NHL career ended. Or is there some team out there that wants a 33 year old LTIRetired defenseman on their roster?

EJ has every right to decide not to waive, has he can still play at the NHL level when healthy, why would he chosse to go play on SeA when he has a chance at a cup wity COL for the reminder of his contract?

Because he doesn't have a chance at a Cup with the Avs if he doesn't waive. Your theory has a giant hole in it.

It's either he waves or gets bought out. I mean, he's been oft-injured these past 2 seasons and has a caphit of 6 mill for 2 more years. Not like Seattle would pick him anyways over like Graves, Donskoi, etc.

A lot of people here are showing they don’t know a thing about the Avs.

To stick to the point of the OP, the Avs don’t need to do that trade especially at the cost of Toews.

Jost has played really well at 3C the last couple of weeks, so the need for 3C isn't as desperate as it was before. Though it would still be ideal if Avs can get a 3C.

Worst case, they can trade him to one of 19 teams for an ugly contract or a nothing return. Forcing Sakic's hand to the detriment of the team doesn't fit EJ's MO regarding his time on the Avs.

Are you over complicating this situation just to argue for argument's sake?

Or they trade EJ. He’s got an 11 team list. 20 teams can trade for him. Avs definitely attaching assets to move the last two years of that deal if he won’t waive (he’ll waive).

Graves doesn't have that type of value. He's more in like with Lehkonen or even Armia.
Graves is a 19 minute a night guy playing the largest role on the Avs excellent PK. He’s easily worth a Danault rental. Problem for the Avs is the same as the problem for the Habs. We don’t have a replacement for Graves on our roster. MacDonald isn’t it. Timmins wasn’t it. Renouf and Gilbert are AHL level guys at best. MacDonald is looking more AHL by the game as he’s no longer thriving.

who replaces Danault for the Habs? Both teams need these guys to finish out their respective seasons.

Just wanted to clarify something here . A team gets to keep either 1-3-7 or 1-4-4 . Other players ( 1st or 2nd year ) do not have to be protected . Ufa’s do not have to be protected. If a team has 3 defenseman who fit the criteria to be selected, they do not get the right to decide who is the exposed player . There all fair game
Well yeah, any Dman outside the 3 or 4 protected would be fair game for Seattle. So Graves, MacDonald, and Johnson (assuming he waives) will all be fair game.

The Habs just acquired Staal to play top-9 C (making one of our Cs expendable). Staal is one season removed from ~58 point pace. Then add the cap that we need to fix to get Caufield to play with us (no one’s taking Byron, etc), and Danault’s contract situation (he will be UFA). And finally, we need to move for a top-4 LHD because if there is one real weakness to our team, apart from not having elite-level forwards, is a good partner for Weber.

So yeah, move out ~5m in cap, acquire a top-4 LHD, and get Caufield to also join the team... It’s a no brainer.
Except stall can’t handle danault’s minutes . Neither can the kids

Avs could probably find a replacement for Graves fairly easily at the deadline, like Nemeth or Oleksiak to name two examples. I highly doubt Bergevin wants to move Danault for Graves though so its a moot point.

What are you saying? Of course the team gets to decide who they will protect and not protect
Yes of course you do . But if a team has 3 remaining defenseman after they’ve chosen their protected list Seattle can pick which of the three they want ( as long as they meet the criteria)
