Since you don't even mention cost in your post, I'll assume you're in the camp that is willing to pay him the max allowable for max term which is over 14m per year for 7 years.

Don't make assumptions.

I could ask "seriously, what is wrong with you"? I'll be more polite though as I prefer intelligent discussion to trading insults and just say that I disagree with you, no way in hell would I give him that kind of deal.

Again, don't make assumptions. He should be paid what a player of his caliber is worth but they shouldn't break the bank and handcuff themselves. Personally, I do not think it will be necessary to handcuff themselves in order to sign him.

And that wasn't an insult, it was a serious question. What is wrong with you people?

One who is still in his mid-20's to boot.

But who is apparently on the downside of his career

If McJesus ever hits UFA status I can see people here arguing against signing him due to the potential cost

Patrick Elias
Eric Staal
Brian Campbell
Dustin Byfuglien
Jaromir Jagr
David Backes

Would you sign any of those pending UFAs?

No? Hmmm… age eh?

What age do you think Stamkos will be when the team is ready to compete?

(Is it here where I insert the face palm thing?)

It seems like you're missing something here - like I said, we all want him, the only issue is cost so if you agree with not overpaying him I have no idea what you're going on about.

Some people have said ITT that they only care about goals, the fact that he doesn't get a ton of assists doesn't matter. Ok then, Stamkos' goals per game starting with the season he scored 60.

0.73
0.60
0.54
0.52
0.45

It's still early this season so he could improve on that 0.45, we'll see but like it or not, that's a downward trend. TB fans seem to think he's not same player he once was, there seems to good reason for this. He's not a defensive force, nor is he a great playmaker, he's basically a goal scoring specialist and in order to get the most out of him, you need to pair him with someone who can feed him the puck. He's not the type of player you would play in all situations or who makes those around him better. He's got a couple of years of prime left, after that, it's a question of how quickly rather than if he will decline. He's still a great player and may well be able to pot 30-35 goals a year even at the age of 30-32 but considering his limitations in other areas, making him the highest player in the league and guaranteeing him that money for 7 years would be a risk that I would rather pass on.

And on the subject "I'd rather overpay a star then lesser players" that's just dumb. If you overpay someone by 2 million, that's 2 million less to work with no matter who the player is. I'd rather not overpay anyone thank you very much.

How long? I'll take Buff, Backes and Staal on 2-year deals without hesitation.

Be great to see those guys helping Marner, Rielly, Nylander, Brown, 2015 first break in to the NHL them flip them

Stamkos is 5 years younger than those guys btw

Well, hey great. We can add Buff, Backes and Staal to the roster. With Bozak, Lupul and Phaneuf that should be a great win now roster… right?

:shakehead

Flipping them? Flipping injury prone declining skill set guys is a piece of cake. For a team that has been stuck with many buyouts, you'd think the fan base would learn.

You'd think that a patient, scorched earth, rebuilding fan base would scoff at the idea of signing 30+ year olds to big cap contracts. But there it is… "without hesitation". I guess Bozak and Phaneuf and Lupul are cornerstones of this rebuild?

Of course he is 5 years younger. This is the point regarding the accelerated rebuild. He's got a 5 year (or less) window to be useful before he becomes an anchor. Clearly, that doesn't bother you but it does those of us that have learned from years of "accelerated rebuilds."
