I thought EDM, TOR, and COL were the obvious teams that fit him from a playstyle standpoint.

No surprise he's already excelling in COL. Happy for him.

Walker looks great, fits in really well. Crazy that they included dumping Ryjo for a meh 1st.
I thought the flyers should have received more tbh, given the cost of offloading bad contracts in the offseason.

But this TDL was a buyers market so they did well all things considered.

The two defenders in the NHL that lead the league in goals where the defender jumped into the rush are:

Bowen Byram - 6 such goals.
Sean Walker - 6 goals

Seeing how Walker seamlessly interacts with this Avs team, you get the sense they need to dump Manson and give this guy that money.

Then replace Manson with a UFA big defensive bottom pair type at $1-1.25MM on a one year prove it deal. Someone that wants to chase a Cup. Avs have been able to attract these type of players in recent years in their cup window (ERod, Tatar, Drouin, Jack Johnson)

Run a defense that is

Toews - Makar
Girard - Tyler Meyers on a 1 year deal (or Tanev, TJ Brodie, Dillon, Dumba, Edmundson types)
Jones/JJ - Walker

If the Avs believe in him enough, Malinski could make Girard available, but I'd still trade Manson too even if the Avs also moved on from Girard. Manson isn't money well spent given his inconsistencies and adventurism on the ice. He's not great at PK either.

So spend the Manson money on a guy like Walker and shift more money to wingers... Go with defensive plugs to PK and play with Dpair QBs like Malinski, Girard and/or Walker.

The Flyers got a 1st for Walker so they did fine. The Avs probably saw this as a 50/50 deal.

50% of that 1st went to landing Walker and 50% of that 1st was the cost to paper over the summer mistake of trading for RyJo and moving his 2024-25 $4MM cap hit off the books.

This seems like a win/win trade.

Using the Marleau Scale 1st=$6M cap dump, so you’d think the rate of exchange on RyJo’s $4M slot would be about a 2nd. Easily worth it from the Avalanche perspective.

RyJo was such a lousy fit on the Avs roster given their play style.

So the Avs ship Johansen and his 2 year contract off to the island of misfit toys and replace him with a player in Sean Walker, whom looks like an ideal fit stylistically.

Amazing use of a 2025 protected 1st. The legigimate two birds with one stone piece of GM wizardry.

The number of games the Avs have lost since the trade deadline = 0

This includes road wins in Vancouver and Edmonton. Vancouver being the back half of a back to back.

Colorado is now the team to beat in the NHL.

How has Walker been in Colorado? His absence has been felt in Philly for sure.

Was a buyers market. Walker was one of only 2-3 players that even returned a 1st at all.

It was a masterful trade by Colorado. It isn't so much Philly got fleeced, so much as the Avs were able to reconstitute their whole roster and balance it out with depth and a quality second line center or as it was last night top line, by shifting RyJo's money and making Byram expendable.

Philly used their cap space to up their return for Walker. Good move for a rebuilding team.

Yup. CMAC is a master of roster construction and structure. Its all the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

was always going to come down to Roy or Walker in LA. LA went with Roy and its hard to argue why they did. Always liked Walker and will continue to route for him,
