Anyone claiming this is a bad deal aren’t factoring in the coming inflation. Mackinnon is the 4th or 5th best forward, really in that second tier right below McDavid alone. That calibre of player is today worth AT LEAST 12.6 million today on the open market
Johnny B Good signed for 9,75 M
HubyDuby signed for 10,5 M

Both as UFAs in new teams...

I guess they're done winning cups.

He's arguably not even the best player on his team and they never made it anywhere in the playoffs until they assembled really good depth that they already couldn't afford to keep (Kadri). You'd think both the Avs and MacKinnon would know this is the end of them being a contender.
Maybe... But they won the Cup. That's all matters for now.

When was the last time a player got anywhere close to max contract?

He might “sell seats” but basically no one can afford a max contract and ice a Cup contending team
They don’t need to be a cup contender with Mackinnon jersey sales. I guarantee Arizona would give him a max contract just for the Jersey sale revenue. No player has signed a max contract but no player as good as Mackinnon has left as a UFA. John Tavares was offered 7 years at 13 million years ago by San Jose just imagine what Mackinnon would be offered.

Um.......those guys aren't close to McKinnon's level. Not sure what point you are trying to make?

Nate compared to Hubby and Gaud IHSA leader, played fewer games, plays 1C, more rounded defensively and superior playoff performer. He’s often ranked among the top 5 best overall players in the league for a reason.

Mackinnon contract will be rightly exceeded in a few years by McDavid. Comparable players Matthew, Draisatl etc will be higher so it’s really a non-issue in the coming years.

Arizona won't make any moves until/unless they land Bedard imo.

Over the last 5 years, MacKinnon has the 3rd highest PPG in the NHL (1.31 PPG), behind only McDavid (1.53) and Kucherov (1.38).

Huberdeau's PPG over that time is 1.13. Gaudreau's is 1.09, and that's significantly inflated by a single year. Before their most recent, career best seasons, they were at 1.04 and 1.01 since 2017-18.

They aren't in the same tier. It's not even close.

What’s their overall PPG between 18/19 and now? When Huberdeau broke out. I actually don’t know but I imagine it’s much, much closer.

Injuries past also comes into the equation when it comes to these contracts as well. Mackinnon has been a good bet to miss some games

It's going to be Johnny with Laine next year getting all the prime ice time. This will be an interesting revisit.

MacKinnon 1.29
Huberdeau - 1.12
Gaudreau - 0.99

Still a significant margin. It does get closer as you reduce the sample size, but MacKinnon's sustained dominance is why he deserves more.

What are the numbers for previous season? All the contracts were signed this summer and the only thing that matters is the current ability to perform. I love Nate and he is very entertaining although sometimes frustrating to watch, but to claim he is a tier above from Johnny and Jonathan is a silly take.

Yes, the contracts were signed this summer. And this summer, MacKinnon is getting sized for his Stanley Cup ring.

He's also scored 1.3 PPG or higher in 4 of the last 5 seasons. The premise that only last season matters, like Huberdeau and Gaudreau will definitely repeat those performances, is just laughable. MacKinnon is a top 5 player in the league, without much question. Huberdeau and Gaudreau aren't even top 10 players. Claiming those are the same tier is the only silly take here.

When was the last time a player got anywhere close to max contract?

He might “sell seats” but basically no one can afford a max contract and ice a Cup contending team
A lot of GMs don't think that far. Selling seats is a huge reason that superstars are really worth more than they get. Max contract in sports is pretty much just because NHLPA wants some level of equity for their players.

If you think it’s too much (it’s not), just average it with Makar’s and now you have both guys making $10.925 million. An exceedingly reasonable number for both.

The idea that this is going sink any further Cup chances is nonsense.
