Darling might be able to wait and get a bit more. But given his career path, he may be happy that another team showed they wanted him enough to deal for him that he'll sign with them. He may not care about squeezing every last penny and just want a fair deal and the opportunity to start, which is the easy part given where we're at. I think he'll sign in the not too distant future and it'll all be fine. After that, just a matter of how well he performs.

Think about this for a minute... If you were Darling which team would you rather play for?? The canes who are on their way up the standings with a boat load of young prospects, or Vegas who is starting from scratch and are probably 5 years away from a playoff spot?????

Chicago did Darling a favor and got themselves a draft pick all in one deal.....

What choice do the Canes have exactly? Looking at the market as a whole, there are some unproven potential starters in Raanta, Grubauer and Darling. While there are proven starters in Bishop, Fleury, Mason and Elliott, all of those potential options are coming off of underwhelming seasons. There are no slam dunks available.

Just a reminder than Bobrovsky was coming off an underwhelming season too...

I have no idea why he would go to Vegas over Carolina.

Slavin, Faulk, Hanifin, Pesce are waiting for him in Carolina. You don't build a defense like that very easily.

Why is it so hard to understand that most players Vegas will draft in expansion will be traded to other teams.

Okay, why would he sign in Vegas to be shipped off to who knows where when he can sign in Carolina, and be in a great position to lock himself into a #1 role behind arguably the best young defensive core in the league.

Apparently the thought process here is that he wouldn't want to pass up an opportunity to choose his own future, so he would sign with a team that will choose his future FOR him.

Well again if he wants to be a starter that's a bad plan for Darling.

Carolina is pretty much the perfect place for him.

The best u25 defense in the league, cap space like crazy to improve the team and starters job available.

They played Anton Khudobin more than him in 13/14, because Khudobin was better than Ward that season. Other than that though, every other goalie they've brought in has failed to be better than Cam. It has less to do about loyalty and more to do about other guys just not being good enough.

Bingo. If Darling can outplay Ward, he'll get the starts. But that's apparently a more difficult task than it seems, since Khudobin and Lack were supposed to do so "easily" and couldn't keep up.

Hopefully Darling will break that pattern.

I think if the Canes exposed both goalies in the expansion draft, there is a good chance they would grab Ward as a back up. Leaving Lack in CAR with Darling. As a long time Canes STH, from before Ward's ascension, I would be heartbroken to see him play elsewhere. That being said, I think it would be best for Darling and the organisation, as they could no longer keep going back to him long term because their future goalie has a bad game or two. They would have to stick it out and give him a fair shot at #1, which they haven't done to this point.

In most cases a player will be drafted when another team is asking for it. Darling could be little bit different because CAR won't be exposing much else, but still other teams could suggest salary and term and Darling could choose the offer he likes most. Seems to be very easy.

I think Darling will be a good pickup for Carolina. With that defense and add a couple more forwards they could make the playoffs next year.

Yes, too easy.

On July 1 he can sign with the team of his choice, who would then not give up any assets or other compensation for his rights.

Voila! No middleman.

There are some former Chicago players on the Canes right now from the 2015 Hawks cup team. I'm sure Darling might take comfort in that. I expect him to sign with Carolina.

Carolina is tailor made for Scott Darling. Count on him signing with the Canes.

I don't think there is any real chance that Vegas takes Ward. Even if they were prone to considering it, Ward's personal off-ice life (including his son's hearing impairment; all his doctors and support personnel being in Raleigh, the increased difficulty of socially integrating a special-needs child in a new area, etc.) makes it likely he'd retire rather than move his family to play elsewhere. That has to be enough to give Vegas pause, if not deter them entirely.

Not hard to understand at all.

The players to be traded are RFA'S and players under contract.

There's no reason for a UFA to sign with Vegas only to facilitate a trade elsewhere.

Vegas will surely sign some UFA's to play for Vegas.

And that team can talk with many other goalies then too. CAR could have waited for July too, instead they wasted a 3rd pick and forgot that they might have to pay Vegas too. Till the expansion draft Darling's agent should ask for the moon.

The Canes have made it clear that Darling is the guy they want, and frankly it's a good choice. Natural progression from young backup to emergent starter.

Darling will be signed and will stabilize that position for them just as Schneider, Talbot and Anderson did for the Devils, Oilers and Leafs.

It's not all about this contract. No matter where goes there won't be much difference in dollars and term.

The big payoff will be after what comes next. Carolina is an ideal spot for him to establish his credentials as a starter. There's no other place that's half as good for his long-term earning potential.

And I'm a Leafs fan.

Thought He'd be signed already

Negotiations begin this week.

Francis spoke with Darling, 28, for the first time later Friday night, saying the goalie was “genuinely excited about the opportunity and the fact we stepped up and showed interest in trading for him.â€

Francis said he would begin preliminary talks with Matt Keator, Darling’s agent, early next week.

“Obviously we’d like to get something done sooner rather than later,†Francis said.

Like Carolina fans have said Carolina isn't the most wanted UFA destination.
They have to take risks at times to get players signed.

A 3rd is nothing if Carolina finally gets to address their biggest need.
