The Blue Jackets deserve a lot of praise for selecting Nutivaara. Based on his production, this deal does not seem to be too bad.

Nutivaara's breakthrough show took place in the SM-liiga play-offs, in perhaps the best defensive group of the whole league for [mod]. So it wasn't that miraculous trajectory given that already before the draft he was positioned very high in the European game, similar to Matthews and Laine and unlike Puljujärvi who didn't take that final step to stardom.

Jackets fans should all be thrilled. Nuti has been the number one candidate deserving of more playing time. He is starting to produce with minimal PP time playing 16 minutes a game. If needed he can certainly play top 4 minutes. At a lot of times, his pair with Murray has been better than the second pair. This is a good deal now - he has definitely been worth 2.7 this year

This deal is going to look very very good by the end of it. He will probably be cashing in big time as a UFA.

He was a solid defender who got the 1st pass through with the occasional contribution on offense. He was solid and didn't get into trouble himself defensively.
Seems like he's proceeding to become a similar type player in the NHL. Steal of a contract if he adds more offensive stats without sacrificing defensive play.

That's a steal. Another big win for Jarmo regarding these young RFA players. He's already a top 4 guy and only going to get better. Jones and Nutivaara on the right side is a great place to be for the Jackets going forward. Size, speed, skill.

The comparison between Matthews, Laine, Nutivaara and Puljujärvi is that three of those names played their breakthrough season for the best teams in Europe during the draft year and especially in the play-offs. Puljujärvi didn't rise to such role in a very good team despite the enormous hype and hubris surrounding the pick. Could have very well been for the best if he also would have been given time in Europe to try and shape his play to that status of a top-3 pick.

But the comparison is between Matthews, Laine and Nutivaara in that they were pretty much NHL-ready because they ranked very high in the Afroeurasian game before coming over to North America. Hence their stories were not exactly cinderella stories by the time of the draft. Before that maybe but already in spring of 2015 Nutivaara had made his name. Not in full force of course by then but at least in the eyes of those who watch over the talent and know what they are doing and more importantly understand what those who they are looking at are doing.

Jackets board regulars strongly suspect that said poster is a guy who used to insist Nutivaara was the best blueliner in the CBJ system (yes, even with Werenski and Jones in the fold) and who absolutely hated Puljujarvi, to the point that it may have led to a ban.

If that poster comes up with a reverential mention of "the Leading One" at some point, then we'll have confirmation.
