Dundon's pulling the ole "Sink a couple hundred million into a sports franchise, personally pour thousands of hours into it, and sell it back to PK for the same value as you bought it for three years later" con

Some might say he'd do better putting it in Index funds but where is the fun in that?

"Hey honey, I've got this idea....why don't I buy this spunky little hockey franchise. They look good, are media Darlings, and are on the up swing. I'll go in there, throw down just a little bit of money, and then become the hero. In a year or two we will win the cup, then because of this cool clause in my contract, I can sell out quick and still keep the pictures of me raising this cup thing they like. What could go wrong?"

His idea that you don't get good players in Free Agency is a little weird though

We got Ray Whitney and Cory Stillman as free agents and they worked out Okay.

I think Jordan Staal would have gotten to Free Agency if the Canes hadn't traded for him

It's really not that weird of an idea, when you consider there are multiple threads on the main board of HFBoards.com explaining how UFA acquisitions are often huge mistakes.

I believe that BBA has pointed out many times that the free agents we've wanted over the recent off-season have blown chunks. Sure, if a guy like Tavares makes it (super rare), or a young, good, player makes it (rare) to UFA, they are worth it. But mostly, the big free agent signings are the Eriksson, Lucic, Ladd, Okposo's of the world and either immediately or within a year or two are regrettable or not performing as expected or paid. Trade and draft are preferable to me in many cases.

There's always going to be mistakes drafting, mistakes signing free agents, re-signing players etc.

I'm not suggesting we go out and sign David Clarkson like deals with guys

But deas like Justin Williams are totally worthwhile

Watched the entire TD press conference. Not sure what all the uproar in the Twitter-verse was all about. He didn't say anything outrageous or even "wrong". The team does have to be better....everywhere. This was essentially a shot across everybody's bow, "you've all got to be better or you need to polish up your resume". I kinda liked it actually. The most surprising/not surprising thing was his non-committal to Bill Peters. The "he did a good job" coupled with the "he knows he's got to be better" thing left me thinking that Peters is less a lock for next year than some thought.

The fact that he wanted to hold the interviews and get a sense of where everybody's heads were while also laying out his expectations is refreshing. He cares about winning and knows he's got to put a better product on the ice. He needed to learn first-hand what the players thought as well as letting them know first hand what was important to him as a new owner.

I see nothing at all wrong with that.

Demand level is a fine requirement, with Dundon even using Sebastian Aho as an example but hopefully that toughness shows itself more than in physical preparation or in miles skated in a game. It would have been good to mention the name Teuvo Teräväinen also, who according the rumours does not prefer these Rantanen, Laine and M. Koivu type training camps where big iron obeys the men in summer but prefers golfing, floorball, tennis and more skating-based drills as preparation.

The only problem with outworking others is that most of the other teams are trying to do the same, hence value in assets or individuals is heavily drifting towards those who do not fit the picture of days dedicated to work which is an imaginative frame, a concept created in the cloister, unnatural to men. I liked Ottawa Senators last year having these flegmatics in Bobby Ryan and Derick Brassard leading the chase. Hopefully this summer's purge recognizes the value in what the eye can either see or not see, for ice hockey is not only one type of mind game but an entry in the concealed world, open only for the few. Teräväinen found in the WJC U-20 tournament the pathway to golden success, captaining his team, leading by example.

Raimo "Rami" Summanen (who the Canes should hire as head coach) had a good story of how he, "the hapless", had Jan Caloun, who as a player was capable of four splashes a night (including scoring four goals in the NHL with his first four shots), showered with defensive responsibilities, hence taking away Caloun's magic. How to learn to not do so.

So I keep coming back to the following statement made by Dundon: "Very rarely to teams go to free agency to add assets and feel like it's a good idea." I think we all need to level set and manage our expectations after that statement. That was very concerning to hear.
