So I keep coming back to the following statement made by Dundon: "Very rarely to teams go to free agency to add assets and feel like it's a good idea." I think we all need to level set and manage our expectations after that statement. That was very concerning to hear.

I hate the quote too. You can compliment existing assets in free agency. It's probably not a good idea to build your whole franchise through it

I don't tihnk there's any Hurricanes fans who think adding Tavares to our team this summer would be the worst thing imaginable though

I don't remember the exact passage, but shortly after this was a discussion about using assets in a trade may/would be a better path for this team to follow. As I've said before, I think we'll get a solid "value guy" in free agency, but our splash, our big add will come via trade.

Also, I'm not sure, if I was Dundon, I'd play the "I'm paying top dollar for Johnny T" before the bidding has even opened.

I'm more curious than concerned at this point....and kind of excited again.

When you are looking to buy an expensive item with a negotiable price, acting somewhat disinterested isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I am 100% positive that both Peters and Dundon specifically want Tavares. My drained enthusiasm on the matter comes from how disappointing the Canes finished the year. Hopefully Johnny is a big fan of money because that’s the only differentiator the Canes can offer.

I don't think the price is very negotiable though. Tavares is going to get top dollar no matter where he ends up.

And in this case, looking disinterested is a good way to get scratched right off the list. We're not in a position to act like players would be privileged to come play here. If anything we're probably a bottom-5 destination in the league right now (above tire fires like Buffalo and Arizona, but below nearly everyone else) so we do need to show a certain amount of enthusiasm and commitment to players who are willing to consider coming here.

I'm not so sure it is much of a differentiator after the projected cap rise this year. My guess is that there will be quite a few teams who can make room to sign JT to a contract that we would offer without killing themselves. I think the true differentiator for us is a "quite" market. If he stays in NY (Rangers), or goes to other places rumored to be ready to back up the Brinks truck (St. Louis, Montreal, etc.), he will be besieged on a daily basis. Here, after the initial signing, most of the area won't know him. That is the only thing he may appreciate that other places can't give him.

I've said it the entire time, but there is no chance we get Tavares. I don't think there ever was, and even with a new owner that might be able to get directly involved and potentially throw a lot of cash at him, I still don't think there is. We are not a destination at this point for a player like this. We would be close to the bottom. And I've always maintained that between the cap rising and teams making moves to accommodate signing Tavares, not only was there a decent list of suitors already, but that there would be more based on teams being willing to make those moves. The best we can hope for is that he leaves the Islanders, leaves our division, and hopefully our conference, and that we can maybe get a good trade for our abundance of futures for whatever team gets him. Failing that, maybe we can make a deal with the teams that lose out on him and feel they need a different shake up.
