Somebody ask the Governor if Connecticut is such a great place compared to Raleigh, how come his people are fleeing the state for NC in literal droves.

Which would make them the same as the canes?

Wouldn’t the last 20 years have been worth it to the fans?

We’re not talking about now when we all discuss the topic. It’s all about then. Did the Whalers leaving with no real replacement hurt the city/state in ways it’s hard to put numbers on? CT produces pro NHL’ers. It’s still Hockey territory.
Hartford to Boston - 102 Miles
Hartford to NYC - 118 Miles
Hartford to Newark - 126 Miles
Hartford to Philadelphia - 212 Miles

The closest NHL city to Raleigh?

Raleigh to Washington DC - 278 Miles

That is why the last 20 years was worth it to having the franchise in Raleigh rather than Hartford. This franchise is filling a massive geographical hole in a well populated, affluent region that you just didn't get in Hartford. Hartford is still in hockey territory, its just now a part of the Bruins/Rangers region instead of its own thing.

This map is kind of old at this point but click on Hartford County, CT then on Wake County, NC.

Look at all that red (outbound migration) for Hartford then look at all that blue (inbound migration) in Wake County. That map says it all why Hartford will never have another NHL team, and why Bettman wants to keep as many teams in the Sunbelt as he can for the long haul. Future demographics and growth potential.

Also correct.

Are we forgetting that Hartford is a total ****-hole? And Raleigh is awesome. The End.

And that comes from a guy who grew up within radio range of 99 Rock WPLR

I was actually rather surprised when I saw some list about ten years ago that listed the ten most violent cities in the country and saw Hartford was right behind Memphis and St. Louis among others. I'm not entirely sure how this site analyzed their data or if it was a per capita basis or if it was just some bullshit click bait article, but that was surprising to me. But when I asked former residents about that, they all pretty much nodded their heads in agreement.

Yes, it's always been dreadful. It was even worse back in the 80's (but back during the Crack Wars everyplace was worse).

It's nearly as dumb a place to put a hockey team as...Newark. But they went ahead and put one there too, didn't they?

Back in the 80s, all 3 of Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven were in the top 10 of murders per capita in the USA with New Haven #1. I remember the local morning radio show reading news reports of murders followed by the New Haven tourism jingle.

Another big issue I see in a Hartford franchise returning is RSN penetration. Even in the 80s and 90s, most of Fairfield County got MSG instead of SportsChannel. And the AM radio feed had a lot of trouble penetrating Fairfield County, while the Rangers were on the WFAN massive broadcast signal.

They’re obviously not getting the canes back. They’re most likely not getting hockey back, though I believe that has a lot more to do with Bettman than the “market analysis” I see here.

There’s people from Ct who still have pride in where they’re from that are on this board (though obviously others don’t care, which is fine too). The posters here are rarely/never the type of posters you guys are annoyed with, or the type of posters you want your comments to reach, yet those posters here are the ones receiving them. If we don’t want to get actually angry at each other why not go to FB or one of those other outlets chock full of the type of people you want to annoy and do it there?

As one of those people I’m repeating that “let it go” is a two way concept.

"Not getting hockey back?" I'm pretty sure they have hockey already courtesy of the Wolf Pack, the Sound Tigers, the Whale, the Huskies, the Bobcats, the Pioneers, and the Bulldogs. I'd argue that two Triple-A teams, a NWHL team, and men's and women's programs at four D-I schools constitutes having "hockey." This underlines one of my problems with some posters who treat hockey as an "NHL or nothing" proposition. It'd be akin to complaining that North Carolina "doesn't have baseball" - no we don't have MLB, but between two Triple-A teams, four Advanced-A teams, four Low-A team, a Rookie League team, 10 summer collegiate wooden bat league teams, and 18 D-1 teams, we have plenty of baseball to go around.

This is what I keep coming up with. There sure are a lot of folks "on our side" who keep furthering this discussion who likely are the same folks who got SUPER pissed about comments coming out of Quebec.

Yeah, but the people here aren’t just responding to some random internet troll. They’re responding to the chief executive officer of the government of Connecticut sending an open letter to our team owner inviting him to relocate the Hurricanes. Even if the letter is just a nonsense publicity stunt, that carries some weight in the public arena.
