He can retire a Cane on year to year deals though. Lidstrom was a much higher profile player and he went year to year at the end of his career.

Lidstrom signed for 17% of the cap on a 2 year deal at 36 in 2006. That's more than McDavid in 2017 or MacKinnon in 2022. Lidstrom then followed that up with another 14.8% of the cap for another 2 years in 2007. If Staal could get $14m for just the 23-24 season, I'm sure he'd sign a 1 year deal.

If the Canes want to keep him that much, 4 years and a full NMC at 35 years old, it's their team.

Loyalty contract and a terrible one.

As already mentioned, because he signed the contract before 35, he can retire at any time and the Canes take no penalty. Given how the contract is structured, it’s looking like they’re not expecting him to play that final year. But they gave it to him to lower the overall AAV.

So rather than sign him to a 2 year deal with a $4 mill hit, or a 3 year deal with a $3.5 hit, they got him for under $3 mill.

Year 1. 3.45m
Year 2. 3.41m
Year 3. 2.65m
Year 4. 775k with a 1.315m signing bonus.

So it seems like this is a 3 year deal where he will collect the signing bonus for year 4 then retire. Thus the actual contract is 3 years x 3.6m

Using the fact he is right under 35 for cap circumvention. Smart!

If you watch a lot of Staal play, you realize he is a unicorn hockey player. He's elite defensively as they come, and I've said for a while he is second only to Bergeron. He very well could win the Selke in the next four years. On a team where everyone plays great defense, Jordan Staal is still at least a standard deviation better than the 2nd best defensive forward. The only better defensive player on the Canes than Staal is Slavin, and I'd put him above Pesce.

His defensive positioning is elite.
His board play is elite.
He is the strongest and most fit player on our team every year.
He can play with AHL or barely NHL players and elevate their game (see Jordan Martinook this year and other players like Andrej Nestrasil and Joakim Nordstrom in years past).
He has hands of stone, but is a decent net-front presence.
You can count on him for about 17 goals a year.
He raises his game in the playoff, and is usually one of our most impactful forwards. He scores about 0.5PPG in the playoffs.

His game is such that he doesn't rely much on speed or agility, but more strength and positioning. At this point, it looks like he could play another 4 years and still be a quality 3rd or 4th line center. However, if the mental quickness slips he could fall off. The best comparable at this point to J Staal is late-game Rod Brind'Amour. Unfortunately for Brindy, his game completely fell off a cliff at about 38-39. Fortunately for Staal, his contract ends at that age.

They could use signing bonus too tho.
Signing bonuses too are subject to these variability rules of frontloaded multi-year contracts. They are still paid on a particular league year.

The obvious negative is the length and his age but I guess 1 benefit is its not a 35+ contract so he can technically retire in the final year if he wants to and Carolina won't take the cap hit.

Its not a terrible cap hit anyway for a guy you'll lean on to be a 3rd Centre who can fill in as a 2nd Centre for injuries. Maybe I'm wrong but he has gotta be one of the better bottom 6 forwards in the league no?

I’d like to add to this post, but you pretty much said it all here. He’s not some superstar but he’s one of the best pure defensive players (not just centers, but players at any position) in the league.

Year after year, people say the Canes don’t have the offense to be a contender. Year after year they’re competing for the President’s trophy with an elite PK and “breakout” goaltenders who only thrive in Carolina. The reasons for that success begin with the names Slavin and Staal.

Despite the lambasting of the “futures > anything” crowd loudly and with great frequency, I think this is a great deal for both sides. This place sucks so bad with how predictable it is sometimes. LOL HE’S OLD & CAROLINA’S STUPID LOLOLZ.

Decent signing for the captain and with the cap going much higher in the near future.

If I'm understanding how his contract is structured and the CBA correctly, this is basically a 3 year deal. Not that terrible when you think of his value to the team, caphit, etc.

I'd love for Kopitar to sign something like this in LA (not sure he'll be able to due to being over 35 when his contract comes up though)

And Pesce. Those three are the true superstars of the team.

I guess Jordan Staal is the new Patrick Marleau where he's been around so long that it feels like he's older than he is

I was surprised at someone that I thought was like 40 getting a 4 year deal so I looked it up and was shocked to learn that he's 34

Needed to just move on, 3M to a old bottom 6 guy is not a wining recipe regardless of his leadership.
