Staal's easily worth more than this in the short term. He's an impact defensive player.
This deal just tacks on his 4C years on the backside. I think it of it as a 2 year deal for $9 mil or so and a 2 year deal for $2.6 mil or so rolled into one.
We keep hearing the cap is going "way up" and estimates have it going up 5% each of the next two years but it is hard to see that cap jumping by 9ish million in two years. With the cap going way up soon, J Staal at $3mil to be a good 3/4C isn't that bad.
He’s still got another 3-4 years to play in Florida with his bros after this. You think this deal is bad for Staal? It's completely fair and takes him to retirement.
He's probably skipping around.
It's still going up, and Staal's cap hit halved from his previous cap hit. Canes are fine even if the cap remains flat.We keep hearing the cap is going "way up" and estimates have it going up 5% each of the next two years but it is hard to see that cap jumping by 9ish million in two years.
It went up this year and projects to grow for the foreseeable future. The problem is the growth is tied to Bettman and his team who don't have the best track record of squeezing sponsors/tv deals/endorsements, so it should be tempered. It's still going up, and Staal's cap hit halved from his previous cap hit. Canes are fine even if the cap remains flat.
If it goes up by just 3%, that covers him...We keep hearing the cap is going "way up" and estimates have it going up 5% each of the next two years but it is hard to see that cap jumping by 9ish million in two years.
Because they retained a plus-plus defensive player at a cap hit under $3M a season? That sounds pretty smart to me. The Canes are truly nothing without their elite defense. The Canes are supposed to be smarter than everyone else why did they do this
Many teams do legacy contracts for long time core guys. Jordan wasn’t the typical “franchise player” mold, but for the Canes historic style of defense first, team first Staal as a franchise center isn’t drastically a stretch. The Canes are supposed to be smarter than everyone else why did they do this
Because there is very little downside to this. The Canes are supposed to be smarter than everyone else why did they do this
I know my team just gave out 2 4+ year deals to 2 guys over age 35, but the idea of doing that for a 3rd liner is just mind boggling to me.
The agents representing the new group of free agents will point to it increasing as well and want that piece of the pie.If it goes up by just 3%, that covers him...
