Yeah. We value Kotka pretty highly. Bergevin was a dumbass to OS one of the top centers in the league for a measly 8.4m. If he was serious, he would have offered at the very least 10.5m. If he wanted a real shot at getting him: 11.5m.

That’s the only part of this I still don’t understand. I get not wanting to lose picks, but that OS would have been crippling from a cap management perspective. I genuinely don’t know what we would have done cap wise at $10.5M.

Hahaha that was funny. Didn't radulov sign in Dallas and then Montreal was like noooo we will offer that too but it was too late ? I have to Google that story again .
Yeah, and then MTL media claimed it was all untrue and that Bergevin offered that and more from the start.. MTL media is the biggest kiss ass of all the media in the world.

Bergevin famously said: "if you want loyalty, buy a dog". I don't know why I'm still loyal to Bergevin though.

Ah I found the radulov story .

"Radulov, who turns 31 on July 5, became an unrestricted free agent Saturday and decided between the Stars and Montreal Canadiens. He said Montreal made a similar offer after he agreed to terms with Dallas but wasn't going to go back on the contract, which has an average annual value of $6.25 million"

Like dang it wasnt even an outrageous contract for your best winger that year.

It was all PR. Bergevin knew he was going to look stupid once Duchene and Lee and other good UFAs picked other teams, so he wanted to show the Montreal fans that he had a set of balls. It was all bullshit.

Bergevin has proved he can screw everything up and still keep his job. There's no real strong francophone candidates for GM so regardless of the outcome here, he will keep the Canadiens as a middle of the pack disappointment for a few more years.
hold on a minute.
Hes made some dumb and questionable moves....and probably still will...
But what has he screwed up exactly?

Look at our current prospect pool. We're set really nicely for the future.
So he has not screwed Everything up.

There have been far worse GMs with much better players on their roster screw things up much much worse

You made up that scenario so whoever offered that contract must think he is worth that money. Or else why offer and risk they don’t match?

I’m just taking LeBrun at his word about “do something crazy”.

I guess the point is Waddell could add a mil to a player’s value just to drive up the price on an OS he knew would be matched. Best case you get an overpriced but good young player that Dundon has already approved. Worst case he ****s Montreal back on the cap and the rest of the GMs shrug in approval because it puts a stop to OSs for another decade.

He had a far better looking team when he took over from Gainey. He's done everything to demolish it and put us in a terrible spot known as "no man's land". And we're gonna stay there for quite some time! Yay!

When he let Radulov walk because he spent most of the money on Alzner, I'm guessing.
ya but that helped us land Caufield and Kotkaniemi

Weve had GMs make worse moves and not even benefit from a draft with good prospects as a result

Lee signed his deal with the Isles a couple of hours AFTER Aho signed the offersheet. No GM would 'break the code' just for a PR stunt.
I swear, I'm all for throwing stones at Bergevin when he deserves it (and he does most of the time)...but this is getting ridiculous.

Does Montreal go cap dump shopping if they cant land any offersheets/trades or do they sit on a tonne of cap space again this year ?

Oh, believe me, I'm glad as hell Lee didn't sign with us. But I'm sure Bergevin must have known Lee was undoubtedly loyal to his IslAnders.

Signing Aho at $8.5m sets a bar that should help every GM in the league negociate with their RFAs who were already asking for much more. Now, every GMs throughout the league will use Aho's contract as reference.

So Colorado is ecstatic to offer Rantanen a 5 year deal with 95% or whatever of the money in signing bonuses? I doubt it.

Molson loves his money. They'll likely sign one of Ferland/Hutton and that's it.

I think it's hilarious what Bergevin did because he burned a bridge with one of the few teams that could have helped out down the line. What a moron.

I don’t think it will be $8.45M in 2 years. A fair bit higher.

Or, an offer sheet can be sent for less than 1st + 2nd + 3rd
I'm sure Bergevin knows he f***ed up at this point and will do everything and anything to sign his best players before they hit free agency.

I wonder if, by virtue of offering it to Aho, Domi/Kotkaniemi can use it as a comparable regardless if Carolina matches or not.

Can someone explain how a revenge offersheet scenario would play out? Lets say in 2 years Montreal has a player of Aho's caliber as an RFA. What does Waddle come in with for an offersheet that would totes screw Montreal over?

I don't know. I won't sleep much until Gardiner gets signed...other than that, I would expect Bergevin to take his usual gamble with a few depth players (something ala Peca last year) or try to move some pieces via trades. But personally, I'd be fine keep doing our things, and start the year with what we have. It's a long process. Aho would've speed things up, but I don't see any reason to rush things...keep building the prospect pool.

Oh, believe me, I'm glad as hell Lee didn't sign with us. But I'm sure Bergevin must have known Lee was undoubtedly loyal to his IslAnders.

Oh, I'm with you on Lee, believe me.
But I really think Duchene was plan A, and offersheet was plan B. So I really don't think the offersheet was sent just so that Bergevin could save his image. You're not breaking an unwritten rule just for that.

don’t worry, the offer sheet match is coming. the room where the fax machine is located has been infested with junebugs. apparently the pestilence stems from when Hamilton the pig attended playoff games carrying some larvae on his fur. just have to wait for the exterminator guy, funnily enough he doubles as the only snowplow driver in the state! what’re the odds of that! anyways he’s in myrtle beach this week judging beer pong and wet t-shirt contests. should be about 4-5 more days.

True.
But at the end of the day (and the current situation might very well be a good exemple of that), I think owners/gms care more about the AAV than they do about contract structure. The challenge, for most of them, is to fit those AAV under the cap. After that, it just becomes a matter of 'when do we send the money'...

I've heard that Ron Francis may be interested in getting back in the game. Speculation that he might be a good target for Seattle when they come on board, but if the Habs want to jump in beforehand . . . RF did a great job restocking the cupboard for Carolina but didn't seem to be able to pull the trigger on a meaningful actual hockey trade. If he learned from his experience he might be someone to consider if the Habs decide to axe Bergevin.

The 2 best things RF did as the Canes GM were to get Pesce/Slavin signed to such great deals and drafting Aho in 2015. Things were certainly more boring under Francis, but he did have a knack for good contracts (Pesce/Slavin/TT bridge, etc.).
