Given that Aston-Reese is an older player, the Canucks should be more than willing to play him in NHL games this year, and let him blow off the first year of his entry-level deal...might give them an edge....although as a NY kid, it's still more likely he ends up in the East.

The best part of that Gaudette quote is that he seems to want to eventually sign here.

Yeah, that's the biggest positive i got about that twit. Although i got a feeling Gaudette production might drop next year with Reese gone and likely Dylan Sikura also gone (rumor he might be signing with Chicago this year, if he doesn't sign this year an we sign Reese, next year we'll be linked to him in Aug ).

Evan Oberg himself may not have panned out, but he was moved in a trade deadline deal that brought us several years of 30-40 point production from one Chris Higgins. So I would call his signing a pretty solid win for the Canucks.

True, but this has more to do with Higgins resergence than Oberg's value at the time. Higgins was literally a team away from going overseas. The Canucks picked up Lapierre and Higgins in hopes they would rejuvenate their career, aka, they were 4th line or 13th forward options.

Glad they made a huge impact during the Stanley Cup run, but both players' values were at an all time low.

Don't forget Hutton.

Nobody forgot, Hutton was drafted by the Canucks, unlike Oberg or Reese.

Evan oberg still turned into a solid ahl player which is the likely outcome for most college signings. Canucks have been spoiled with tanev and stecher but most end up with careers similar to oberg.

Yes, the Canucks have had some success signing NCAA UFA's over the years...Even Oberg had a decent pro career, with a handful of games in the NHL....and Mike Zalewski was a useful pickup who's still playing in Utica.

They hit home-runs with Tanev and Stecher, and it's extremely hard to find young right-shooting d-men, even in the draft....and they were all-in on Justin Schultz, before he signed in Edmonton....now look at him in Pittsburgh...has turned his career around.

Chris Higgins wasn't anywhere near leaving the NHL.

He had 22 ES points in 48 games for Florida in 10-11, which is excellent 2nd line production especially given his high-end defensive play.

He'd had a brutal season in 09-10, when he struggled after a trade to his hometown Rangers, but he'd already rebounded in Florida before we acquired him. That he continued to play well was not surprising.

Can't believe Gaudette is trying to sway ZAR to sign with us, when he himself isn't even going to sign!

Amazing!

My point is, he wasn't sought after and certainly not one of the biggest rewards on trade deadline day. He was bouncing from team to team and finally found a home in Vancouver where he rejuvenated his career. In fact, before he landed in Vancouver, he was on 4 teams in the previous 4 years, never playing a full year in any of those seasons.

Regardless, my post was directed at people saying Evan Oberg had value as he was part of the return for Higgins. It certainly turned out great for us as he was an integral part of the cup run, but his value wasn't anywhere close to being a top deadline asset. Higgins became a better player in Vancouver. Which means, Oberg wasn't a great asset to begin with. You could certainly substitute any AHLer or mid-level prospect and still get a Higgins or a Lappierre at the deadline.

And they didn't even need to burn a year of his ELC to sign him. He will be playing in the AHL on an ATO with a team that can go deep in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Signed a "two-year" entry level deal with the Pens according to TSN, meaning he's a UFA as soon as if plays an NHL game this year and burns off a year of his entry-level deal anyway.

....Not surprised he signed with a team in the East and not a bottom-feeding Western Conference team like the Canucks who are years away from competing...just the way it is.

He isn't burning a year off his contract. It doesn't start until next season. He'll be a RFA at the end of 2018-19.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed college free agent forward Zach Aston-Reese to a two-year, entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The contract will begin with the 2017-18 season and run through the 2018-19 campaign.

Aston-Reese will report to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this weekend on an amateur tryout contract this year.
