Issue is this is bad if they do nothing else. If this move lets them trade Tanev then it maybe okay. Del Zotto is just blocking other dman and needs to be moved if possible. We cannot have 4 vet dmen and be this bad. They need more moves.

How could signing a mediocre #6 defender possibly allow them to move their #1 defender?

This is like saying that re-signing Brendan Dowd would allow the team to trade Bo Horvat.

For all you naysayers out there who are screamy bloody murder how much do you think that this guy would have gotten on the open market as an UFA? While I am not the hugest fan of this guy he has been better of late and is one of the few guys on our team who will drop the gloves to stick up for a teammate. Overall 3 years at 4 mill a year is not that bad. No NTC as well is decent - for what it would have taken to replace this guy on the open market not a bad deal at all.........despite what all the armchair beer league experts in here might say.

Open market UFA contracts are almost always a terrible overpayment that teams regret later.

How are Gudbranson and Tanev related at all? Tanev is a top pairing defenseman while Gudbranson is a #6 guy on the worst defense in the NHL. If the Canucks trade Tanev with the hopes that Gudbranson is going to fill his shoes they might as well not even play the next 2-3 seasons.

Benning probably thinks Gudbranson is a top 4 dman.

Gud's replacement level at everything he does except hitting. We're paying 2nd pairing money for someone who should be sitting in the press box with a healthy roster. The worst part of this deal is that Benning got a long look at his black hole play and stomach-turning stats and still thought "no, the past and the present have nothing to do with the future".

The fact that some other dinosaur GM would have given this bad player a huge contract doesn't mean it's a good idea for us to.

Like, the fact that David Clarkson turned down even more money from Edmonton didn't make him a good signing for Toronto.

I don't think that the answer to the team's overall "softness" is to sign a guy for 3 years with that cap hit. That could be addressed by signing, for example, Michael Haley for 0,825 per season for one season to begin with. Guddy's contract alone isn't the end of the world but the general trend with signing huge contracts for "specialists" debilitates the team as a whole.

I just don't get how anyone can justify paying a bottom pairing defenseman $4M per year.

Well one of the better GM's in the league of one of the better teams parted with a 3rd round pick in order to get a player similar to Gudbranson this off-season. Like it or not, there's a market for this type of player.

3 years at $4 million

With no NMC or NTC.

Had it been 4 years it would have averaged out to about $3.65 million maybe $3.75 million.

With a lack of RHD on the current roster and in the organization this is far from a terrible signing

But I am sure that won't stop the histrionics and overly dramatic statements about how and why it's terrible that Benning couldn't even throw him out the door for a measly 3rd.

I applaud this signing because it's actually not bad. You may now throw your tantrums.

Alex Biega is a better RH defender at both ends of the rink that costs $600k and who we'll let walk for free this summer.

They already did that with Granlund making McCann and a high second and a 4th for Real Gud, the circle of crap just keeps rollin on.

Well there was a large chance that he would’ve gottten Cody Franson ed. So using that as an argument is pretty inaccurate.
The market is no longer rewarding bottom paring guys like Gubranson big money because guys like that are not useful.

So then they should have been able to get a decent pick for him at the deadline, which is a lot more useful to a “rebuilding” team with a superstar drafting GM than a bad bottom pairing defenseman.

Luke Schenn had to wait until the end of July to get a cheap 2 year deal from Arizona of all teams, but yeah, Gudbranson was totally going to get way more than this on the open market.

Part of this is probably to avoid the optics of letting him walk or trading him for less that what we gave up for him. It’s not right but this is how they think

Yeah, - I'm not claiming he'd fill Tanev's role at all, he's much worse. I'm just saying that signing Gudbranson might allow Benning to think he could actually move Tanev. Him and Edler are the only defensemen we'd actually get a moderate return on.

I actually just want to get max value for our declining assets right now.

Not trolling. But I say traded to Panthers within a year with 50% retained for McCann

I agree, I would've rather they moved him for whatever at the deadline. Was just addressing the question of who would pay a bottom pairing defenseman $4M. There are lots of teams out there doing just that.

No NTC or NMCs

This is the key !!

Who cares if.hes over.paid by 250-500k. The term.is.perfect! The CAP is going up and we dont need the CAP space until were competitive. When this contract is over then so will Sutters and Erikssons is finishing up. Then we can do damage !

Obviously not happy but im not surprised , it is what it is ... Benning and Co. have made their bed now they can lay in it. They have continuously gone against the status quo , giving zero F's about fan/media input into how the team should be developed. It seems whenever we are extremely opposed to something they do the complete opposite with no disregard, its very egotistical and borderline narcissistic. They will never admit fault its quite Trump esc. Eventually it will catch up to them or at least one can hope.... With that said the team was going to struggle with or without Gud the next several years anyway so i'm not going to lose that much sleep. I'll always be a fan and i'll always have hope...

Not a fan of the signing at, only silver linings for me are 3 years and no ntc are perfect and ufa rhd this year is just awful

Too many below average d on this team especially on the left side. Only way this signing/trade deadline isn’t a complete failure is if 2 out of Hutton edler MDZ is traded.

Not holding my breathe

Shockingly I see many in this thread following your advice...........although we all know that the Haters are thrilled with any excuse to rant on against the current regime and are very versed in the fine art of tantrum throwing...........

Yes theyd find a way to throw a tantrum even if we won Game 7 vs Boston.....but but but you didnt sweep them !

One thing for sure. This signing isnt on owners or anyone else. Its all Benning. Glad he is getting a chance to really stamp his plan
