Also, Burns is dogshit this year. It's probably time to rethink having him playing first line minutes with Slavin. Might want to consider moving Orlov up to that first pair and praying that Burns-Chatfield isn't 18 levels of shit

But yeah, our defensive makeup is awful. Burns is cooked and TDA coming back was a mistake. You are going to struggle when 2 of the defensemen you were counting on suck, so we are kind of boned in that regard. Might need to pull a trigger on a trade soon

This team will make a trade and it’ll be for another defenceman when we thought coming in defence was gonna be a strength now it looks like they need another d man and a top 6 forward and maybe even a goalie

We are not a cup contender this year. Too many holes.

At this point we are battling for a wild card spot.

Maybe next time don't hang a goalie out to dry who is clearly hurt. Just saying

I think showing some confidence in Kochetkov who won the previous game, and giving Raanta some well deserved rest after being pulled for precautionary reasons was the choice to be made. I told my wife when I saw Raanta was starting, it was probably a bad idea.

Depends what you’re talking about. At no point did I miss Tony tonight if that’s the point. I saw the top four making a ton of consequential mistakes so I’m hardly annoyed with Orlov.

Tony’s whole pp skill is moving the puck quickly to the wide open guy to his flanks. We did that a ton with no effect, because no one could make the big pass to the middle. Tony wouldn’t have helped that.

Bunting is a punk. No one likes him and tonight they ran up the score after he overreacted to his goal, and they enjoyed every minute of it. He baits and dives but has no toughness to back any of it up.

They were six goals better than us tonight.
Bunting may be a “punk” but I had no problem with his reaction after the 2nd goal. He was trying to get th team fired up.

Fact is, it’s Tampa’s roster that has several thugs on it and going after bunting I suspect is tied to LY.

Noesen being surrounded by 3 Bolts with NO canes sticking around to “assist” is emblematic of the weakness of this roster.

They have no one with balls to challenge tougher teams and it’s a damn shame they lost the Tkachuk trade. He is the guy they needed to get this team over the top. As presently constructed it’s not a SC winner.

On the positive, Orlov-Charfield seem like they will solidify the 3rd pair.

I’m more concerned with the top pair (Slavin has not been himself this year and Burns has been crap).

Forward wise, I’d give up one of the top 6 that played tonight in a package for a proven goal scorer; hopefully one that can hit too.

I’m surprised they didn’t do more marketing around the retro theme tonight. Outshooting the opponent by double, only to have an insurmountable deficit… defensemen watching helplessly as the goalie does a breakdance move to deflect the puck into his own net… fans not even having the energy to boo in a half-empty building. Lots of special moments tonight.

I saw a father wipe away a tear as his child yelled “make a ****ing save” for the first time. The whole production was a lovely tribute to o.g. Canes fans.

Adam Gold has become such an unbelievable shill

TDA sucks at defense. Every metric says he's terrible at defense, and this clown says this:

The team didn’t play great, but this ass whooping was pretty squarely on goaltending
Raanta looked slow as shit before he was lit up in the third. I have no idea why he was back in net after leaving the last game for precautionary measures, this loss is on him and the coaching staff for letting him play.

Bunting is a punk, but I don’t think his goal celebration tonight was egregious unless I missed something.
He had been yapping back and forth with a handful of Lightening guys, went big on the celebration and starting yapping with the bench talking smack about it. Lightning feed caught the ref lighting him up on our bench telling him repeatedly to shut up. They referred to him much of the night standing in front of their bench yapping at the whole bench. It’s why Watson went after him at the end, they were blowing us out and Bunting was still yapping. Lightening announcers are as mild and respectful as they come and it was clear they thought he was a clown.

There’s huge history between him and Cernak, with Bunting suspended last playoffs for the elbow that knocked Cernak out. It’s been a running dialogue between the two all season. Their whole team hates him for that, but he created all sorts of new drama tonight.

Lol, completely missed that story line watching the homer feed.

Trust me I get it. It’s why I stopped watching our feed, again…for the last few years. Since John left it’s too much for me and you honestly can miss aspects of the game you’d never see. Not every crew is very good to be honest but it’s fun to get a new take on us every game, and I enjoy watching a lot more.

Bunting was a sideshow clown tonight. He’s clearly very unpopular throughout the league and the Lightening/refs/announcers all reached a point where they just weren’t having him anymore. I actually think he galvanized them against us. Watching the other games on their feed they’ve shown Cernak and Bunting yapping at each other even in warmups.

Maybe occasionally we’ll win a game because someone cheap shots him in a key moment, but I really go back and forth about him.

I haven’t been following as close as I usually do but I’m kinda surprised at the lack of urgency around goaltending since Andersen went down. Like maybe behind the scenes there’s a bunch happening but it seems pretty clear to me they don’t really trust kochetkov and even clearer to me that raanta cannot be a starting goalie. He’s a very good, great backup but he can’t be relied on to start. That book was written on him before he ever put on a canes jersey, and still they’re leaning on him.

This was my first ever Canes game at PNC. Let’s just say I know how to pick them lol.

Observations:
Raanta - as others have said, he is not a starter. More than that, why play him against a Tampa team that has snipers like Stamkos, Kucherov and Point who all know how to shoot high very well? Raanta is a small goalie…geez

Shoot the puck - I mean talk about overpassing. Even my 7 year old (her first game at PNC too sadly) figured this one out! I mean on every PP the Canes just overpassed and often passed to spots where no one was even there.

Goal scorers - they need to add at least one through trade. I’m not a Laine fan but a sniper like that who actually likes to shoot would definitely help the Canes PP.

I think we’ve been rolling the dice for a few years with the concept that we’re so good defensively that we don’t have to aim too high with goalies and can save some money there.

We’ve gone with two injury prone goalies for a few years now, and I think it’s hurt us a few times including the playoffs. I wasn’t very happy Raanta came back but I also wasn’t very optimistic about the market having anything for us either.

I agree Raanta shouldn’t be a starter, he’s never struck me as good that way. Even when he’s gotten on a roll in the past he didn’t seem to be that strong.

I don’t see a solution out there so it’s pretty moot.

Hard to argue that hard against a Laine trade watching tonight’s game. I agree completely about the overpassing, and it was all around the periphery. The pass they goofed every time was the one to or through the middle.

For sure that’s been the strategy and I don’t even necessarily think it’s a bad one, it’s just interesting to me that they keep rolling raanta out when kochetkov is right there even though raanta has been showing basically his whole career what will happen if you start him more than a few games in a row. I’m a little baffled they let him finish this one, honestly, but again what does that say about kochetkov? Raanta is literally letting in every other shot and they still would rather not put kochetkov out there?
