They are both leaders. And Marner has a better 2way game than Strome so Getzlaf vs Kane is disingenuous, And while Strome is big he is soft unlike Getzlaf. We could only hope either of them become the calibre of player either of those two players with their elite offensive ceilings.

Yes, a more accurate comparison would be Spezza vs Yzerman.

Also LOL at the guy referencing the Coyotes broadcasters thinking Dvorak was the best player on the Knights. Y'think they might be a little biased?

If you are giving Marner a top ceiling of Yzerman it's not fair to give Strome a ceiling of Spezza IMO.

Does anyone have a link/copy of the gm ratings of players? It was mentioned Marner is tops in several categories. I would like to see the whole list.

TIA.

Interesting that Crouse was rated a better prospect than Strome (I don't agree but still)

Maybe the Marner-Strome gap is bigger than we think

OT: He is clearly the best player in junior

Well obviously its a different poll, for a few reasons:

1. This isn't a coaches poll, its a coaches and executives poll
2. That was an end of year poll, a lot of those players have now moved on to the NHL and the sportsnet poll reflects that
3. This poll is coaches/execs opinion for the current season
4. That annual coaches poll will again occur at the end of THIS year

Not having a great night thus far, -3 with no points and a period to go.

The Marner, Dvorak, Tkachuk line are probably due in the 3rd period.

Whole line has looked off but atleast 2 of the goals are on the goalie/D. jamisons pinch created a three on one, and while Marner turned it over they scored on a 1 vs 2. Plus Marner got on the board with a goal.

Love how he comes to this thread for the first time in forever once Marner was a - 3, and other than a turnover was great all game, and got a nice goal too.

Was I not the first to post Marner scored tonight also? Usually I don't have the chance to do this given Marner's large following here. This is the main board and it was worth noting he was not having a great game tonight. Something I would hope some Leafs fans would readily post about rather than the usual superlatives.

Marner does not need me to pump his tires. Others are doing a fine job of doing this with great frequency. I will say he is a good prospect though if you think I am being unfair.

Like I said other than the one turnover, he played really well. He was buzzing all night. Looks like you were just looking at the scoresheet and that he was a -3 so he was having a bad game. It's fine because lots of people do that, but if you watched the game you could've seen how being -3 (like the majority of times using +/- to tell if a player is having a good game or not) didn't correspond to his overall play.

I see you in other threads pumping other prospects tires when they have a good game, and haven't seen you in awhile since Marner was putting 2+ points per game up the last while, but here you come once you see a -3 on the scoresheet.

Marner (nor his linemates) had anything to do with the 1st and 3rd goals. First goal was completely on Mete leaving MacInnis wide open for Bracco--everyone else covered their man. 3rd goal was Jamieson making a terrible pinch and Kitchener subsequently capitalizing on a 3v1.

The 2nd goal Marner got pokechecked on Kitchener's blue line. However it was just a good ordinary defensive play you see every other shift. The goal scored was on a 1v2 from a bad angle that should have been stopped. Marner's role in that goal was incidental and really the goalie's fault.

Exactly. Wouldn't know that looking at box scores though.

Calling Marner just a "good prospect" is an outright insult to him

The fact you constantly ramble on about your list and how you had Barzal #5 and Marner #9 is going to rub people the wrong way, especially when your the only person I've seen put Barzal above Marner. Then you show up to point out Marner is a -3, without giving any context. It took me and another poster to even explain how it happened.

Marner and his line were -3 last night when I posted. You even said they were out of synch. He had a turnover that led to a goal. Something he does a bit of. He is a creative player so things like this do happen. Like I said he is a good prospect. But in the NHL under Babcock, he will have to limit this or he will not see much ice time. Do you agree with this assessment? Is this unfair. As for my ranking of Barzal ahead of Marner it shouldn't rub anyone the wrong way. Barzal is having a terrific season with lesser teammates. He's a great prospect that has always excelled at Center.

Why shouldn't I talk about other prospects? This is a prospects thread isn't it? As for only posting about Marner when he does not play well. As I said, Marner has a large following here that already posts about his points with great frequency here. This thread does not need me to push him. Leafs fans do this well enough.

But I will disagree with you that I do what you claim. I posted his play had really taken off when he moved back to wing from center to play with Dvorak and Tkachuk recently. Maybe you missed this.

Regardless I will continue to call it like it is on this board.

Obviously all players have to refine their game, but a player scoring on a 1 on 2 is on the d and the goalie. Barzal is good and they have similar attributes, but Marner is a way better goal scorer, Barzal is clearly in the tier below Marner and Strome, and it was shown in pretty much all pre-draft rankings and how the actual draft went. If Leafs passed on there pick, Marner he wouldn't slip to 16th, he probably doesn't get past Jersey or at worst the Sharks. There was a clear consensus top 5 pre-draft, while Barzal was in that 6 to 12 grouping.

You claim Marner who has put up points at 2 ppg clip for 85 games should be a 3rd line center on the Canada WJC? When Marner was the best player at the WJC summer camp, a higher pick, considered a better prospect by practically every major source, should be behind Barzal because of Barzal's amazing WJC-U18 tournament where guys like Dzierkalis and Bracco played at a similar level.

Considering I started my post by stating, "I was hoping it was more along the likes of the annual coaches poll" I am not sure you needed to point this out.

Thanks, I guess?

Anyway, the way the Sportsnet poll was being talked up I thought it was more comprehensive and wanted to see it. The one question on who was the best player in the OHL Marner was the favourite but garnered 35% of the vote. To me that suggests he is far from "clearly the best player in junior".
