Do you know how to find "odd man rush" stats? I feel like despite out playing almost every team the other team always seems to have more odd man rushes. Honestly, it could be a psychological thing where I just remember the opponents opportunities better because I feel like they will cash in on there's and the Canes won't.
I don't know where those stats exist. I think its a few things.
1) after watching a series of games last week and Monday, odd man rushes and poor coverage in front of the net is an issue with many teams. Minnesota, who is always touted as having one of the best defensive group was just brutal the other night. Same with some of the other games I watched. I think a lot of it has to do with most teams want their defensemen to be much more active offensively at a time when the league gets faster and faster.
2) Canes seem to coach the defense to pinch and "activate" (as Peters says regularly). There were times last night where both defensemen were pinching very low leaving 1 forward high. While this clearly drives possession and offense, it exposes a team to odd man rushes. Canes defensemen are more aggressive pinching to keep a puck in the zone than many other teams I watch.
3) Canes coach their defensemen to maintain very tight gaps in the neutral zone. Again, this makes it hard for the other team to gain the zone and maintain possession, but any error leads to an odd man rush.
