This is a case where your eyes do not see the full story and you only see what you want to see to support the narrative you have chosen. The ENTIRE team was garbage against the Penguins. Hanafin started the bad night off with 3 of the first 3. The first goal Hanafin had the opportunity to block the shooting lane off from Crosby. Second Goal Hanafin was too far out and not taking care of Hornqvist. The Third goal Hanafin did not collapse back to the net on an odd man rush to prevent the rebound.
It was not until the fourth goal that Brodie was on the ice and he was all over Malkin who was the largest threat and when the forward did not pick up Kessel is was Brodie that pealed off and tried to get to Kessel on time.
After this goal the entire team imploded. Nothing past this point matters as nobody other than Hathaway was even interested in playing hockey anymore.
Flames' T.J. Brodie remains valuable asset despite limited offence - Sportsnet.ca
This article shows that even over the past 2 seasons Brodie is likely in the top 40 Defensemen which means he is a definite #2 by any measure of stats. Most of the critics out there have NO clue and pick and choose the plays to support the story they want to tell.
ANY PLAYER can be made to look bad.
I crucified Hanafin in the first three goals. Smith should have had 2 of the 3 and Smith, Hammer and Hanafin should have had better communication and positioning on the third.
