Panarin has a better Hart case than the raw point totals suggest, based on when he scores his points.

He leads all players this season in points scored while the game is tied.

Game tied
Panarin - 16-25-41
MacKinnon - 12-27-39
Kucherov - 11-26-37
McDavid - 13-23-36

And he's right there with the other top 4 scorers in points scored while trailing.

Trailing
Kucherov - 9-37-46
McDavid - 8-33-41
MacKinnon - 13-27-40
Panarin - 15-24-39

The reason Panarin is a distant 4th in scoring is he didn't score as many points as the others while his team was leading. Which could be due to coaching decisions to have him and his team play more conservatively with the lead.

Leading
MacKinnon - 26-33-59
Kucherov - 23-36-59
McDavid - 11-44-55
Panarin - 18-22-40

Panarin also has more big game-swinging points than the other 3. Looking only at tying or go-ahead goals in the final 30 minutes of regulation or OT:

Panarin 9-20-29
McDavid 3-22-25
MacKinnon 9-13-22
Kucherov 6-16-22

Those 29 points came in 25 games, in which the Rangers finished 22-1-2, getting 46 points! That's an incredible run of results when you consider they had been trailing or tied in the second half of each of these games. Panarin's clutch scoring is one of the biggest reasons for the Rangers' President trophy finish this season.

In the perfect world he should be a front runner with Kuch for the Hart. “The Hart Memorial Trophy, originally known as the Hart Trophy, is an annual award for the most valuable player to his team in the National Hockey League (NHL)”. It’s not for the best player in the league.

So Oilers is still a playoff team without McDavid, they have Draisaitl.

Colorado is still a playoff team without MacKinnon (Makar, Rantanen).

Toronto is still a playoff team without Matthews (Marner, Nylander, Tavares).

And then we have Kuch with 142 pts, 53 more than next teammate and TB would miss this year playoffs without him.

And Panarin 120 pts, 43 more than next teammate on President Trophy winning team.

So Hart ranking in the perfect world should be

1-2 Kuch&Panarin
3 MacKinnon
4 McDavid
5 Matthews
What a ridiculous post. The classic "xyz can't win the Hart because he has a good teammate" argument.

First of all, likely none of these teams make the playoffs without the efforts of the players noted. Oilers were dead last in the NHL when McDavid was just playing injured, not even fully out of the lineup and playing PPG.

Secondly, enough with this "Kucherov is a one man show" nonsense. Point and Stamkos both also scored 40+ goals, they have 6 guys with 20+ goals and Hedman with nearly 80 points.

Just the 9th time in NHL history 4 players have hit 120 points in the same season.
On one hand it depends on how often you'd consider often vs. not. 9 times is about 10% of the time, so not "remote".

As high scoring as the 1980's were and people point to that as Gretzky inflated stats, not everyone was putting up huge numbers.....most years it was less than 3 guys scoring 120, in 1987 or whatever year it was, Gretzky put up 183pts and #2 had 108pts.

The crazy year was 1992/93 - 10 guys had 120+ points.

People will point to the 80s, but it only happened 5 times in the 80s. It was most common then by far, but half the seasons did not see four players hit 120 points.

80s - 5
90s - 2
70s - 1
2020s - 1

Only Austin matthews would be jealous of that 69-69

Pretty awesome accomplishment, but he came over to the nhl later. His body didn't take nearly the abuse at 32 as the kids that started in the nhl 18. Russian khl hockey is less physical and the players aren't as talented. HE has 6 less seasons of nhl players hitting him and probably has less wear and tear on his body. I have no idea how you compare the effect on the body from khl hockey to nhl hockey. The breadman is a fun player to watch.

True, I’ve said this before as an argument for why Panarin will probably age very gracefully and be productive into older age

they should have never banned Russia. I want to see a fully loaded team Russia got head to head against the best of others.
