“We’re coming in to a critical period where we’ll make a decision whether we need to shake things up or not,” Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Wednesday while watching his team practice at T-Mobile Arena.
Asked whether he would do something big to create a ripple effect and get his team’s attention, Rutherford simply replied, “Yes.”
At the beginning of this season, knowing how much hockey the Penguins have played over the past two seasons, Rutherford said he figured it might take until the halfway mark to get going.
Time is running out.
“We’re almost there,” Rutherford said. “We are at a point where we’re slipping in the wrong direction. We have to watch that real close.”
While declining to say which of his players would be untouchable, Rutherford did emphasize that the path of least resistance would be playing better and getting on a roll.
Rutherford said one of his biggest targets if he does make a move would be center depth.
The Penguins tried with Riley Sheahan, and he’s been a fine player. But he hasn’t given them three scoring lines — and forced the opposing team to make matchup decisions — the way Nick Bonino and Matt Cullen used to.
“We need more depth at our center ice position, to a point where we can get more production,” Rutherford said. “I’d like to see if we could get more balance, more production out of our forward lines. We’ve got some guys here who are capable of producing more. At this point, it hasn’t happened. That may be the area we look at.”
I don't think the Leafs really need him... and his contract.Should the Leafs claim Belesky?
I don't think the Leafs really need him... and his contract.
They need Bozak in Pitts
lol i know. what woud you trade him for
Wow, I didn't even know about this. That has the potential to be 2009-10 Leafs horrible. So if Ottawa finishes in the bottom 10 this year they keep their pick and it differs to Colorado in 2019...... where it is unprotected.
Think about the ramifications of that given their current and expected rosters
hahahahahahahahahaha
