I'm skeptical that they actually are willing to spend the $$ to improve. They have no choice now but to pretend to try to improve, because every remaining scrap of talent in the org will jump ship if they keep looking like this. Let's see if it is real.
You do realize that 5 other teams had worse records than the Coyotes, have a billionaire owner who is looking for work for the construction company he owns. Owns 2 very profitable casinos (1in Reno, the other in Vegas) and other businesses. He is looking to eventually making the team a profit and being a Latino, I can see him dreaming about signing Matthews next year. He'll have the cap space and now he needs to take the next step.

Another arrogant condescending post from Montreal fan
It's funny how the Habs have been the 1 team with a worse record than the Coyotes these past 2 "tanking" seasons.
I have to admit that I wonder how much money Meruelo is making in his 2 casinos.
I do hope that they figure out about a new arena soon, his construction company needs to be working.

Like it or not, he has earned a reputation as a cheapskate owner, and that comes at a cost. They can't even draft talent with any assurance that their new players won't demand out of the organization.

And yet Meruelo got them out of Glendale and is seeking to build a new arena with his own money and somehow he is a cheapskate? BTW, 1 of the priorities of the scouting department is bringing in the right people that want to be here. Cooley said before last years draft that he hopes that AZ picks him. The team is currently looking at 3 different sites for a new arena, so it doesn't look at all like the team will leave AZ.

Buddy, they got evicted from Glendale because he wouldn’t pay the rent.

Lmao moving to Mullet wasn’t by choice.

There ain’t no new arena. No shovels in the ground.

Their first choice was to stay at Gila River Arena until their new arena was built. Gila River refused to start a new lease with the Coyotes because of their missed rent payment issues.

Going to Mullet was not the plan.

No but they've been talking about moving out of Glendale for years, 2016 at least, and the only reason they stayed as long as they did is because Glendale wanted them to up until like 2021. It's not nearly as one sided as you think it is.

So why didn’t they leave until they were evicted then?

No, not really. They have a ton.

22 picks in the top 3 rounds of the next 3 drafts.

So 35 picks in the next 3 drafts isn't enough?
Draft picks can be used to trade up in the draft, and or for prospects - so yes they could use more. Unless ARZ is going big game hunting in FA, which Seravalli is telling us they are not, how do they plan on using $45m in cap space? If they have space left over, then it's poor asset management. If they plan to trade for good players with bad contracts that other teams are willing to unload for free, then that makes senses. But then why isn't that in the report?

Glendale wanted a long term lease with penalties. Not having to clean up the toxic landfill means that the arena will be built earlier than previously anticipated. 2 of the sites they are currently looking at are on the Salt River Indian Reservation, so there doesn't have to be a public vote.
Also the Coyotes were talking with ASU prior to them building Mullet.

Evicted? They agreed not to sign a new lease as the city wanted a long term lease and penalties if they left early. The Coyotes were willing to stay until they built a new arena, but glendale wanted to force their hand. Meanwhile the Coyotes were talking with ASU before Mullet arena was built.

They say timing is everything in life - and on that note I like that AZ decided to stop being a cap dumping ground AND the salary cap is going up only $1M in 2023/24.

So, for all you cap strapped teams needing a little a help - don't call AZ cuz they're out of the dump biz - give the Hawks a jingle and I'm sure we can work something out.

The Yotes will be the third ream involved in a trade for EK, taking on dead cap for the trade for a pick. See? We were involved in a big trade!

Of course they wanted to stay in Glendale until they could get an arena built. They offered to sign a 3-year lease with option for 2 more.

Glendale demanded a 15-year lease minimum or nothing. I can quote Glendale's own city manager if you'd like.

The rent payments had nothing to do with it. That was all political fodder. The last thing Glendale wanted was to have the Coyotes go build a third arena in the Phoenix Metro that would compete directly against theirs.

The fact the team was evicted is bad enough. How many pro franchises have ever been kicked out of their arena for non-payment of rent?
