Are the Red Wings the worst team in the league?

They are at least five years away from competing. Absolutely dreadful in goal, defense and forwards. Larkin is a good player. But he's not elite. Things are about to get worse before gett better.

Eh it’s impossible to tell where a team will be in 5 years. It’ll be at least a few years though.

5 years in a salary cap league is eternity. They have 36 mill in cap space next year and if they add A.L. they will be better.

We have been rebuilding for 3-4 years already, we didn't just start this year. Things should start getting better next year already.

I was speaking more to how teams have snuck up the last few years, and not about who would be around at 2-4. Teams clearly tanking, and it not paying off with one of the top 2 picks.
Oh don't get it twisted Buttman will never give the Wings a top 3 pick!!

Just realized, Detroit has five forwards signed next season.

... Four of them are Helm, Abdelkader, Filppula, and Nielsen.

Mantha scoring at a rate that's gonna potentially demand $8M. Bertuzzi's producing at the same pace, but would probably have to do some sort of bridge before getting that kind of dough. Athanasiou not playing well enough right now to get more than Larkin got.

Yes and now that there’s a lottery it’s a depressing place to be. Looking forward to the Sharks jumping above us to pick Byfield

If you want to familiarize yourself with depressing places, you should probably take a deeper look at San Jose. The only way they’re drafting Byfield is if he drops out of the first round.

Pretty sure this is rock bottom. They've got a few top 10 picks in the AHL who should all be NHL ready next season. Add in that they're likely getting a top 5 pick (finally) this season and that could be 4 top 10 picks added to the roster. They have the money to do something in free agency too, and Yzerman is active with trades.

Tbh people said "they're 5 years away" like one year before the Leafs made the playoffs. Things change quickly when you add a bunch of talent at the same time.

1st game 2 goals

Very small sample size, but man, it sucks being a Buffalo fan thinking "could we have used him? Nahh, I'm sure he's done.. anyways, let's watch that Det-Boston gam- f***. 2 goals already!?"

Hope Detroit works out for him, could really be a great situation. Also, props to Detroit for dropping Boston and just playing a gritty game, was nice seeing them largely silence that incredible first line of Boston's (if just for 60 minutes).

Yeah, but it's great seeing the 14-15 Guelph Storm again. Nick Ebert, come on down!

If you watch the wings play a lot, Larkins line is always shutting down top lines like that. Larkin is becoming one of the best match up centers in the league. They've regularly done the same thing against Toronto all of last season, did it to McDavid and Draisatl this season etc. The issue is Detroits bottom 9 forwards are so horrible they cant even come close to depth scoring. Tonight they got a couple from Fabbri and win. They have one line that wins a tonne of matchups and nothing else resembling NHL calibre players.

Hopefully Fabbri can become even a 45-50 point depth guy and adding some first round picks to the line up next year can change that

Not really a fan of the team but always had a soft spot for them, because of the courage to assemble those euro-heavy teams in the 90ies. The Russians, Lidström, Yzerman et al. were a treat to watch.

So, here's hoping that they don't stay in that hole for too many years.

Yeah they were my 2nd favorite team (Bruins) before Bourque joined the Avs and made the Wings the enemy. The league is better when they are a good team.

Things can change pretty quick, especially for teams with good management.

One first overall pick, a few good bounces in the later rounds, and some solid external additions could see them back in 2-3 years.

But yeah, this year they look really bad.
