I agree there's depth. I just don't see a 1C, 2C, 3C, 1LW, 1RW or 1D. Those are kind of important spots. Maybe Zary or Coronato evolve into those wings, but likely not. We have a guy who projects as a good, maybe great starting goalie. We have depth. Just no game breakers. Yes, I was not a fan of the Honzek pick. Normally he would be a fine pick at that spot, I just saw lots of difference makers still on the board there. Also felt we had plenty of wings.
We've gotten far OT so I'll just wrap it up here.

The only teams that have those kind of positions locked in in their prospect pool are teams that have been rebuilding and drafting high for years. We have Kadri and Backlund at 2C and 3C both signed for a while. I dunno if Zary or Coronato are going to be bonafide top line producers but I like their chances to be top 6 quality. Zary already is IMO. 1C and 1D are hard things to find but I think if the Flames pick three or more times in this upcoming 1st round there's probably a decent chance they walk away with one. The defenseman in particular look good.

Rebuild properly means you add at least one or two top 5 picks. It means you look out past a this year and next horizon. Conroy has taken some steps. I like his trade with Lindholm. I just think any of us could trade the UFAs. The real skill is identifying which vet pieces insulate and support a young roster. It's certainly not all the pieces we have now. Markstrom could go, Kadri could go (if we can move him, maybe though, Monahan brought a 1st).

Well there's looking past this year and then there's looking to compete 5 years down the road. I doubt the late 1sts or whatever Kadri and Markstrom could garner would provide more value to the team next year or the year after than those two would.

If they were going to commit to a full on rebuild the time to do it was when Gaudreau signed with Columbus. They chose not to, I'm not sure if that's the choice I would have made but I at least understand why they made it. Now with the roster they have I would rather go the re-tool root and hope they can knock these next 2 drafts out of the park. There's not one blueprint to contending to the NHL, but the one thing I'm certain of is it's not simply just drafting top 3. Otherwise Buffalo, Ottawa, Arizona, and Columbus would be playoff contenders. You have to make savvy signings and trades and build a culture that has high standards. I don't think you do that by sending a message it's ok to lose.

Flames are not selling they are getting in
I don't think we are. They play hard and all, but take away Hanifin and Tanev? We're 10th with them. That 8th spot in the west is a turtle derby to be sure though, so I suppose it's possible. Steamrolled in round one though. The top 6 teams are all very good hockey teams in the West. LA might figure out their implosion by that time too.

Ya there's no way we get in trading Tanev and Hanifin. The D core would be decimated.

Would need to get a passable #4 back and Kylington to just go god mode.

Never know in.the ayoffs., Vancouver , Winnipeg and Coloroda wouldn't worry me right now that's for sure. I think m the Canucks come back down to.earth for sure. The Avs don't seem.to.care.much and Winnipeg.could be beat too. I.think.Hanifin will.give his answer to.stay and then might as well.keep.Tanev for your.own run.

As an Avs fan it looks.awful right now. The whole dcore has regressed under Pratt and the goaltending is god awful and no 2C and who knows if Nuke ir Landy will.play

edit : top.it all.off with Makar's chronic hip , he hasn't been dynamic at all and the hip.might go

Have you considered that Kylington is permanently in god mode

Nah, rivalries matter. Otherwise what's the point?

I'd rather lose the player for nothing then do anything to help the Oilers win. And for all the crap Flames owner Murray Edwards gets (most of which is probably deserved), he at least gets this.
Yet they've basically been bolstering their 2nd biggest rivals ranks for a playoff run all year...

Guess which of Ekholm and Andersson sees harder competition and more D zone starts? It's not who you think. I'll say it again, the defensive numbers are close. Ekholm's are worse in 3 of the last 5 years. Offensively it's not that close. Add in age and contract? Andersson is more valuable by a fair bit.
Take a look at their 5 vs 5 numbers:

2018-19 Ekholm 1.08 pts/60 Andersson 0.82 pts/60
2019-20 Ekholm 1.12 pts/60 Andersson 0.57 pts/60
2020-21 Ekholm 1.17 pts/60 Andersson 0.85 pts/60
2021-22 Ekholm 0.91 pts/60 Andersson 1.09 pts/60
2022-23 Ekholm 1.06 pts/60 Andersson 1.03 pts/60
2023-24 Ekholm 1.09pts/60 Andersson 1.22 pts/60

Tell me where the big advantage is offensively for Andersson? Ekholm's offensive skills are very underrated. He is such a smart player. Despite being a defense first defenseman he makes a lot of really good plays in the offensive end of the ice.

Here are the stats for the two 5 vs 5 over the last 3 years as well as for Ekholm's time with that defensive juggernaut the Edmonton Oilers.

The zone start advantage since he has been in Edmonton is negligible.

You were concerned about play vs elites. Here are the numbers for the last 3 years.

Now lets add a little perspective. Who have these guys played the most with over the last three years.

Ekholm: Carrier 1201 min, Bouchard 968 min, Benning 240 min

Andersson: Hanifin 2369 min, Giordano 535 min, Weegar 279 min

I'll leave it to you to interpret the difference in roles these two play on their pairing given their partners.

Again, this is a thread about Andersson's trade value. Given his age and contract I would assume he would get a very similar return to what the Oilers paid for Ekholm. But I have still seen no evidence to refute my claim that Ekholm is currently the better defenseman.

You're delusional if you think Calgary is trading Andersson. Especially to Edmonton.
This must apply to you as well . This is a fantasy base board mixed in with some legit rumours. I get the Flames aren't going to trade Andersson especially with Tanev and most likely Hanifin being traded. Calgary would be very short sited if they turned down an offer from Edmonton that was better than what any other team offer. Got to remember if Calgary was trading Andersson it would be for a complete rebuild and Andersson to Edmonton wouldn't hurt them in the least. Fans that state this is like a guy that is going thru a divorce and destroys his house so his wife won't get anything. It just isn't a smart move, Yes I seen a house for sale thataguy took a chain saw and cut the floor out and dropped it into the basement of the house breaking all the pipes and flooding the basement.

Anyways good luck with the rebuild if the Flames go that way. I like having 2 good teams from Alberta as it pushes each team to better.
