Klingberg is quietly sobbing at that Dallas contract he turned down.

In 1 year this dude went from turning down $60M, 8 year deal, (or something around there) to getting a nothing contract and being traded for a 4th round pick. The dude and his agent threw away his career.. after he f***ed up by signing a $4.5M under valued contract to start his career (played it safe with long term, cheap dollar).

Curious how Klingberg fits into the very "defensive-oriented" Minnesota system. He's not exactly a grinding, lockdown defence-first defenceman. Could bring some offensive firepower to the powerplay and if you can get him playing behind Kaprizov a lot. But could also go the other way, and be the guy who costs them that goal against that they don't have the offensive firepower to recover from.

Pretty funny how badly his situation has been botched all around. From not taking a long-term contract offer and ending up on a "prove it" deal in the first place, to being a terrible fit in Anaheim's blueline that just badly exposed him as a liability in a prominent role, to all the intention of taking this asset purely to flip him at the deadline...only to have him net a meagre 4th round pick a couple years from now.
have you seen addison play defense? at worst this is a guy they can swap in for PP duty if Addison stops playing defense again. and then swap them again if it happens to Klingberg.

Not a prove it deal when you sign for $8 million on a team that was clearly going to tank for Bedard. So, on a terrible defensive team, Klingberg was clearly exposed for his defensive deficiences. Massive difference between Ana and Dal with Heiskenen, Lindell, Suter on the left side as partners.

A prove it deal would have been to a better club at $5 mill to maintain or increase his value. Now, he's not ever going to get term longer than say 2-3 years since he's going to turn 31 in August.

Yeah. Exactly. Klingberg and his agent completely bungled the "prove it" deal situation. They goofed up to even put him in that scenario in the first place...but then picked possibly the worst, least flattering possible place to go for that 1-year prove it deal. Presumably chasing that extra few million bucks in the short term probably cost him many more millions in the long-run.

Though he's still probably feeling just fine about his finances anyway. Just totally botched his situation all around.

He either thought far too highly of himself or, more likely, got some absolutely terrible advice from his agent. Either way, he's likely looking at less than half of that contract in the off season after such a dismal season.

Ironically, taking another one year deal may actually be the smart move but this time settle for less and go to a good team that can showcase his strengths.

Imo this will be one of the biggest wins for a buyer this deadline. I bet he turns it around in a hurry
The Wild system could be pretty friendly to him, we generally cycle the puck really well and go low to high for open shooting lanes from the defensmen, we just don’t have a single shooting threat from there. The team defense is also really supportive, as long as he isn’t making tape to tape turnovers every game, he should have coverage help.

He's coming from Anaheim... just having a system will be friendly to him.

Nesterenko is 5-3-8 in his last 5 at BU. 21 yo; 6'2". If Anaheim signs him, he's about what they're looking for. Kling has been good lately, and has always been super talented.

If they can sign him, Nesterenko could be a sneaky good addition by Anaheim. He has arguably been BC's best player (especially of late) and has a good amount of skill to go along with his solid size.

Unless Nesterenko turns out to be a pleasant surprise (playable at an NHL level), what a disappointment Klingberg was in ANA. He was signed on a 1 year deal with expectations that he'd play well enough to go to a contender and he'd fetch the Ducks a decent haul at the deadline with retained salary.

His Ana HC was Eakins. Was he going to at least play as well defensively as he did in Dallas with what they had left on anaheim after sending Lindholm out and leaving Fowler on the left in the top 4? Just a bad decision all around.

I guess the thing that continues to blow my mind is how in love Dallas fans were with Klingberg in the offseason and all the positives they said he brought, he did the EXACT OPPOSITE for half a year with Anaheim.

Probably because his D partners covered up things for him that they didn't see. Without someone like Lindholm in Anaheim after this TDL trade to do that for him, Klingberg was going to fail in Anaheim.

He's gonna murder his (ex? he probably fired him) agent after this, lmao.

Well, he chose a perennial doormat of an organization to go to. Not likely to be exclusively his agent's fault.

There hasn't been much of anything good coming out of Anaheim for years.

This guy is going to take off away from Eakins and on an actual good team.

Good trade for Minny. Just wait until no one else has room to fit him and toss Anaheim a dime.
I was secretly hoping Edmonton could make a deal for him. Now that the return was only a 4th, I really wish we could have. I would have done a 4th and 5th to another team to get the retention to 75% if we would have had the time, 3rd team to take the pick, and an expiring 1.75M contract to dump back.

Hey now. They have to be among the league leaders in lacrosse style goals.

Nobody will want to pay the price it will take to get Karlsson with enough retention to make it possible.

San Jose is stuck with him for a while.
Probably only one more year. If the cap is going to start going up again in the summer of 2024, someone will pay a price to get him then, as long as he doesn't have injuries or regress next year.

Well, that's pretty much what they are capable of these days.

Zegras might be the only good thing that's on that team right now.

A very good candidate to be the next Edmonton / Buffalo. Be prepared for rebuilding the rebuild that was built on the first rebuild.

Hey... we have Terry...
McTavish, a lot of good D prospects, Lundestrom, and a couple guys who will be good bottom 6 players. Anaheim isn't in as dire of circumstances as people think. A top 3 pick will go a long way tohelp solidify the top 6.
