with that info, Hossa will and should be bought out.

if we can buy out 1 player this offseason and 1 next, you buy out Olesz this and Hossa next when he will turn 35 years old and you got 1 extra year playing for you.

Well now. Having a buyout in 2014-15 makes things different for Hossa(if Kevin Allrn is right). We probably buy out Olesz after this year and maybe consider buying out Hossa in 2014-15.

With the salary cap at $70.2M (pro-rated) for this season, and the Hawks currently around $6M under that cap - there is no reason to burn one or both amnesty buyouts this summer. Both should be saved to be used before the 2014/15 season when the cap drops down to $64.3M, based on the variables that will be present after the 2013/14 season. It makes no sense to use a get out of jail "free" card when you're not in jail.

Yes, the buyouts have tremendous value. I agree that it's wise to hang on to those buyouts as long as possible, unless a tremendous opportunity or a real crisis presents itself. Sather, Holmgren, Gillis, etc. will have to be over aggressive, it might be best to sit on the sidelines until some of the gms make big mistakes. It's bound to happen when some of these guys have extra cap flexibility.

Something else to keep in mind. Jagr and Whitney are making 4.5 million, Doan is making 5.3. I think it's foolish to assume the cap hit will automatically help land high end help. Besides didn't we already see how that played out with Campbell?

This article references Luongo's contract. I'm sure someone here could do the calculations with Hossa's if they want to spend the time on it.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opinion/2013/01/new-cba-doesnt-hurt-roberto-luongo.html

If we assume Hossa retires with 4 years left on his contract (last 4yrs are @ 1mil/yr)... the actual amount of money we paid him was 59.3mil, the actual amount of cap space we used was 42.2mil.

Therefore,

59.3mil - 42.2mil = 17.1mil
17.1mil/4yrs = 4.275mil

4.275mil will be charged against the cap for the last 4 years of his deal.

If he retired:

7yrs early = $1.875mil
6yrs early = $2.625mil
5yrs early = $3.675mil
4yrs early = $4.275mil (same for 3, 2, and 1 year early)

The Hawks are $4 mil under the cap. Olesz counts $2.25 mil towards the cap this year.

If the numbers you're looking at that puts the Hawks at $4M under the cap is Capgeek - that's for a 25 man roster with Bollig, Hayes and 8 d-men.

My point is to use them when necessary and if the two amnesty buyouts do not absolutely have to be used this coming summer, they should be saved for the summer of 2014 when they may be put to better use.

We should still trade Frolik. This team needs cap room because it needs help pronto.

Who are you going to sign in the next 10 days for more than $6 mil?

I'm not talking about that. I'm saying the more space we can create now, the more it will compound when we get closer to the trade deadline. A center and a goalie are going to be expensive. I wouldn't stop there either. It's time this team finally goes shopping in a big way. I just want to make sure we have enough to get things done. Plus, this team has too many forwards. Frolik for Greiss like we were talking about on the main boards makes a lot of sense, gives us a short term upgrade and cap space, then we see where things are at with the goalies at the trade deadline.

How many big money guys move at the deadline though? Its not something that happens regularly. $6 mil is plenty to add what you want at the deadline. The Pens aren't trading you Malkin at the deadline.

Trading Frolik helps in sense that not only does it free up cap space, it also frees up roster space for a better player (or at least a spot for someone to develop in) if they do indeed trade him for a pick or minor league player.

The ship sailed a long time ago on Michael.

Doesn't $6 mil in cap space already pro rate into something ridiculous at the deadline? I remember the Hawks were able to add an absurd amount at the deadline last year if they so chose. Plus as it stands, the Hawks can add any of those players right now besides Iginla if they so chose.

Yeah, it does. But adding guys also pushes Frolik out too. What happens if nobody will take him at the TD? I don't see him as part of the future with the wing prospects that are ready. I just don't see his purpose on this team at all. Regarding the cap, we probably won't use it anyway so it's a moot point I guess. I wish we would though, this team was such a joke at the trade deadline last year and the offseason too. The CBA is no longer an excuse.

I'm not against trading Frolik at some point this year or over the summer. I just don't think there is a hurry to do it now.

All this trade talk of Fro must make BWC teary eyed as his favorite under achiever is not a golden boy for most fans. He is wasting a spot that one of our prospects can fill with the same offensive output.

thought about this a bit more and think that buying out Hossa isn't the worst idea. As long as we replace him with a younger Top 6 player I'd say yes to this.

Yeah it is, for now anyways, unless we keep him for four more years. I can think of 10 teams that would trade for Hossa right now, he fetches at minimum a decent prospect + 1st. He's a HIGH IQ player who was second in conference points last year, he'll be fine for at least 3-4 more years.
