Yes, the buyouts have tremendous value. I agree that it's wise to hang on to those buyouts as long as possible, unless a tremendous opportunity or a real crisis presents itself. Sather, Holmgren, Gillis, etc. will have to be over aggressive, it might be best to sit on the sidelines until some of the gms make big mistakes. It's bound to happen when some of these guys have extra cap flexibility.

Something else to keep in mind. Jagr and Whitney are making 4.5 million, Doan is making 5.3. I think it's foolish to assume the cap hit will automatically help land high end help. Besides didn't we already see how that played out with Campbell?

If we assume Hossa retires with 4 years left on his contract (last 4yrs are @ 1mil/yr)... the actual amount of money we paid him was 59.3mil, the actual amount of cap space we used was 42.2mil.

Therefore,

59.3mil - 42.2mil = 17.1mil
17.1mil/4yrs = 4.275mil

4.275mil will be charged against the cap for the last 4 years of his deal.

If he retired:

7yrs early = $1.875mil
6yrs early = $2.625mil
5yrs early = $3.675mil
4yrs early = $4.275mil (same for 3, 2, and 1 year early)

If the numbers you're looking at that puts the Hawks at $4M under the cap is Capgeek - that's for a 25 man roster with Bollig, Hayes and 8 d-men.

My point is to use them when necessary and if the two amnesty buyouts do not absolutely have to be used this coming summer, they should be saved for the summer of 2014 when they may be put to better use.

Trading Frolik helps in sense that not only does it free up cap space, it also frees up roster space for a better player (or at least a spot for someone to develop in) if they do indeed trade him for a pick or minor league player.

All this trade talk of Fro must make BWC teary eyed as his favorite under achiever is not a golden boy for most fans. He is wasting a spot that one of our prospects can fill with the same offensive output.

Yeah it is, for now anyways, unless we keep him for four more years. I can think of 10 teams that would trade for Hossa right now, he fetches at minimum a decent prospect + 1st. He's a HIGH IQ player who was second in conference points last year, he'll be fine for at least 3-4 more years.

Frolik makes too much for what he is. He's a poor man's Kopecky making twice what Tomas did.

Kopy really grew on me in 2011. He can play wing or center and always seemed to be in front of the net.
