At that presser with Bettman and AM, Bettman stated that the Coyotes were losing millions and AM has kept everything current and was willing to cover the loses until a new arena was built. That is from the horses mouth, yet most are making a big stink over some hotel bills that supposedly went unpaid. One statement from the horses mouth, the other hearsay. AM also stated that he was unaware of any unpaid hotel bills when asked. Of course most on these boards won't believe that statement, rather believe whatever is said on social media.

We have multiple vendors in multiple sectors saying they're not getting paid. Are they all just making it up?
Hearsay, that's all. We don't know the whole story. I mean, they might be some validity to some of these claims, or not.

Was just thinking...

AM still owns Tuscon, but none of the players (unless they are on AHL-only deals). So what happens next year in the event that Utah ends the affiliation? Who plays for the team?

I think it would make most sense for Smith to buy the ECHL Utah Grizzlies and make that club the AHL affiliate. Can they join the AHL and then Tucson is "downgraded" to the ECHL and can play out of Tucson or Tempe or wherever they choose? The current ECHL Utah players could then be reassigned to Tucson/Tempe.

Just thinking have the AHL affiliate in Utah (West Valley is like 20 minutes from SLC) will be super convenient, especially for recalls. If the affiliate remains in Arizona, any call-up will need a plane ticket and at least a day before they could get into the lineup.

So you worked for you father? I think that was a point I was making.

My father didn’t put me in a position for the sake of it. I had to watch him and learn from him before I was allowed to take a task on.

Ironically he didn’t want me following in his footsteps, despite my wanting to learn more.

Being put in charge of social media is no big deal. I worked for a Japanese production company and the owner put his wife in charge and she did a great job.

AM Jr. was not running the company, but I bet when it comes to having him LEARN and DEVELOP,
being around his father and the number of diverse companies that he owns, is a better experience than any Ivy League business School education.

I'm a baby boomer and I think that's a huge advantage. It seems every day there's a story of people's lives being ruined because of unsubstantiated rumors or hearsay on some social media platform. I'm amazed at how sure people are on this site about Meruelo and his family. These are people that have never met either of them or witnessed what's been said about them. I've learned early on to not make a judgement on someone I've never met or know anything about.
We don't really know what AM Jr. did or how he handled it.

He was given a title. And a rather big one at that. And we’re beginning to find out just how much clout he was given.

All that being built and yet we can't fid someone that wants to own here rich enough to build his own arena and entertainment center without some sort of city or taxpayer involvement.

Take a look at these 25 huge projects that are already underway in 2024. If you can’t see where the growth of this city is headed after watching this, I don’t know how else to explain it. This information was sourced from an article posted by the Phoenix Business Journal on 01&#47;19&#47;24. <a title="phoenix" target="_blank" href="TikTok - Make Your Day">#phoenix</a> <a title="scottsdale" target="_blank" href="TikTok - Make Your Day">#scottsdale</a> <a title="growth" target="_blank" href="TikTok - Make Your Day">#growth</a> <a title="news" target="_blank" href="TikTok - Make Your Day">#news</a> <a target="_blank" title="♬ Big Time - Confidant" href="TikTok - Make Your Day">♬ Big Time - Confidant</a> </section> </blockquote> <script async src="https://www.tiktok.com/embed.js"></script>

How much ya wanna bet nearly all of those 25 projects involved a tax break and/or grant from the feds??

Ok man. If you choose not to believe all of the reports around the situation, that's on you.

No point in discussing this further if you won't believe what has already been said. I seem to recall you being pretty negative about Meruelo in the past, but if you want to close your eyes and choose to believe that AM Jr didn't have anything to do with the team and that they're both saints, well, more power to you.

I will say that running a social media account for 415k followers is a lot different than running a corporate account for a lot less than that. Also a lot different because you're much more community focused. You can point to other examples if you want, but to my knowledge there's never been someone who, with literally zero experience and education has been put in charge of ANYTHING to do with a major sports team. Pretty sure even Gretzky hired guys who had at least played or been around the culture.

Great post. Isn't social media great.:sarcasm::laugh::laugh:Why doesn't anyone bring up that Jr. and XG had a big part of hiring GMBA. The only person that I heard from the mouth anything about AM and the Coyote's is Nash. He said he had nothing but good things to say, said they stayed in the best hotels and their plane was first class. He said he was always treated well.
Do you have a source that isn't AM himself, saying that Jr and XG had a big hand in hiring GMBA, Jakey? Because multiple people who have worked with the team have said otherwise. Curious to know your breaking source on this.

It was discussed and well know when they hired BA or maybe even before. Not sure if it was Junior or XG say that they were very impressed with BA at the interview, and the way he talks it makes you want to go thru a wall for him, or something like that. Who are the multiple people who have worked with the team have said otherwise?

Funny that in this bizarro alternate universe we’ve ended up in that Meruelo sold the team to Utah and left Jakey behind to defend him.
I'm not defending him, rather the allegations that no one seems to have proof, and only has one side of the story. Bettman said everything is current with AM and always has been despite losing millions every year. I don't think for a second that AM is a saint, but no businessman is, period.

I find it amusing that so many on this board were yelling at the top of their lungs for Isbia to buy the team, he's a good owner, has the money etc. etc. etc. Fast forward a couple of months and all of a sudden we realize Isbia screwed up the Suns for the next who knows how many years, then is hit with a class action lawsuit. NOW, everyone is silent when it comes to Isbia, but keeps on complaining about some alleged unpaid hotel room bills. Be careful what you wish for.

The 2021 Strang article says Meruelo's Vegas casino did not pay a PR firm $22k for work performed and then tried to get the bill reduced through their strongarm bullshit.

Needs citation for context. But for the sake of argument I know of him not paying the previous owners of the Sahara for operating the hotel a few months under their trademark until he brought the Sahara name back.

Still doesn’t show it to be habitual. Even still when you take over assets that are losing money hand over fist the first thing you do is cut costs where you can.

I posed the question to BoH what would you do if you were in Meruelo’s position? Taking on a franchise that is losing tens of millions annually while trying to build them into a winning franchise AND finding a place to play??

Despite all that, he would’ve provided stability and the fact that he operates Footprint Center, a NHL facility with upgrades if he was willing to pay for. That’s will leagues better than AM.

It would be nice if the Coyotes hadn’t relocated to Utah. Between Ishbia and Meruelo, only one of the two has sold our team out of state.

So, no citation? I have never heard of this! Perhaps I wasn't paying good enough attention at the time.

Steve Peters has said several times on PHNX, including in his letter to Meruelo video, that AM jr had power over staff and employees, for example taking the copier from coaching staff and not permitting phones at desks. He has also said several times, including the response to AM's press conference on PHNX, that neither Meruelo had anything to do with choosing GMBA or drafting or scouting.

McKayla Perkins, former social media manager for Bally, Denver Sports, current social media director of PHNX,, who also produced social media content for the Dbacks, has said that AM jr frequently uses the twitter account.

This thread has a lot of information both in the replies from her and others.

Are all the owners of AZ sports franchises bad?
How is the owner of the Cardinals or Diamondbacks?

Also i think the NHL is hoping that all the stuff thats coming out now, will make AM cash in the money and just leave.

Yep. Peters had a LOT to say about AM Jr. and how much involvement he actually had and how he refused to listen to the experience and reason offered by the tenured professionals and caused their departure - Doan, Nairn. Total noob that just had to do things his way. Also mentions how he "managed with intimidation and fear." Sounds like lots of employees left unhappy under his watch. It's insane to hear the levels of involvement he had with his background (or lack thereof) in business in general, nevermind professional sports.

But don't expect @Jakey53 to believe it. He'll just call Peters a nobody or something lol.

There’s a difference between cutting costs and not paying for services rendered. I also highly doubt that AM just suddenly starting doing this when he took control of the Coyotes.
There are also things like cash flow and liquidity. He paid a lot of these “late payments” from other sources that we have no idea where they are from. That means more accounting…. etc….. etc….

Unless he was just printing it himself.

Still all conjecture. Junior wasn’t the only one with access so nobody can say for sure who tweeted what unless you’re going to do real tracing and that involves court orders.

Doesn’t matter who did what. The damage is there.
