The Sens could add 10 million in salary this year and go for the cup

I am going to challenge that statement a bit. Who would you add, and at what kind of term? Further, what would that do to the club's salary structure when Methot and Ryan are negotiating their new deals? I know what you're saying, but I am of the view that this is short term thinking. Overpaying a couple of free agents because we are "loading up" is the old Ranger formula, and it didn't work for them.

What is it with this fanbase that goes out of it's way to look for worst-case scenarios or subscribes to conspiracy theories?

The team is younger, better and is set up nicely for years to come with a solid prospect pool. This isn't the year to go for it or to spend money foolishly. But it absolutely is a team that is going to keep getting better and maybe surprise with a deep run. Maybe at the deadline they add another impact player.

It's going to be an exciting team to watch. As for Melnyk, he can say these things about internal caps, etc because it's not the time to spend, nor should he. As it happens, those statements just align perfectly with his attempts to get a casino. Excellent timing.

Next year and the year after when the new contracts are up for renewal is is when he'll have to spend and he knows it. If you don't think this stuff is planned years in advance than I don't know what to say.

But hey, it must be way more fun to feign outrage and stamp your feet.

I agree with most of this. The problem, of course, with crying poor now is that it actually makes it much tougher to sign guys later because: a) players do not want to be asked to take less to play, and b) players want to win and know you have to spend some cash to do it. For more information see Alfredsson, Daniel.

The selfish part is because Alfie is at the end of his career he wanted the team to spend lots more now, which would put our ability to sign players who enter into UFA or RFA status over the next couple of year in jeopardy. Yeah, even he agrees this is selfish. On the other hand, teams do have to pick a moment to go for it before cap issues break apart a decent core.

Alfie is only going to play one more year, so whatever his contract cost was going to be ($3.5M- $5.5M) wasn't going to have any effect on the team's ability to sign players in the future.

If Melnyk is being totally honest in the latest interview, then unless the revenue picture changes dramatically for the Sens, Alfie will just be the first of many to be looking elsewhere when they hit UFA status.

NHL players want to win and of course be paid fair market value.

What Melnyk said in the Citizen interview is he can't afford to do both under the current financial conditions.

Makes me wonder how in the world are the Sens going to sign Methot, Spezza, & Ryan in 2014 if the owner can't find a spare million or two now to be more competitive.

Alfie's decision was only selfish in the context of his family.

He also said the shortened season made a huge dent in his wallet. After a full season and a few rounds of the playoffs should get us back on track somewhat.

Well, as much as was liking Alfie, a 41 years old foward, averaging 45pts in the last three season (and this number will probably go down), worth 3,5mil/4,5mil max(exactly around what we give to MacArthur). But even that wasn't enough, Because Alfie also wanna play for a team that won't hesitate to spend to the roof if necessary, so he can have the cup (this is the selfish part).

The truth is that we now have a better and younger team to ice this year.

While Alfie did say it was a selfish decision, I don't believe there is anything selfish about wanting to win the cup and be paid market value. It is a competitive business and all about winning.

While I do agree the team is younger, the better part will be largely dependent on Karlsson, Cowen, Spezza & Michalek returning to form and staying healthy, Anderson repeating his 2013 heroics and the youth continuing to progress.

The names on this list suggests lots has to go right in 2013/14 for the Sens to show any significant improvement, hopefully Lady Luck will be on their side.

I know he said that but what does he mean exactly?

Was Melnyk suggesting he lost money or just made less than the full potential?

Given the Sens weren't paying any player expense and many of the employees were laid off during the lockout, then add to this a 7% increase in Melnyk's share of the revenue, I find it hard to believe over the 48 game regular season and two rounds of playoff games he suffered a loss. More likely the dent meant his wallet was just less full than it might have been over 82 games.

Since the Sens player budget has been virtually flat since 2011 ($51M- $53M), while league revenues have grown at record rates and owners share of revenue has increased by 7%, I can absolutely understand Melynk wanting an 82 game schedule.

Simple fact is Melnyk is also a multimillionaire. He could have afforded to give Alfie one more year after all the millions we've saved off Alfie in past contracts, and then paid for Ryan on top.

Meh
My point on posturing was an insult on melnyk. His antics make me sick because he's using team salary for his own political reasons and by this calling Murray as a lyer. But yes, still think alfi is a d bag as per my original post. Both are

I have not posted anything on Alfie's departure until I thought it through long enough.
Alfie had to leave, he wants the cup.
I doubt the mgmt was going to pull the trigger on a big player for 2014, until they knew Alfie was going.
Alfie should have spoken to the fans soon after the news.
The Sens have a big gap to fill.
Financially the Sens need another major partner.

Still am a big fan... And I do not cry over spilled milk.

I truly wish Eugene would have just kept his mouth shut. His comments to the Citizen were not helpful. Rather, it just kept the pot boiling. What he should have said was, "We are sorry that Daniel left. We very much wanted to see him stay, but that's free agency in the NHL. We will always be grateful to him for what he did for our team and city. Now we are moving forward, and we believe this is the best young team Ottawa has seen in a long time. We are really excited about Bobby Ryan, Clarke McArthur, and our great core group. I wish camp started today."

But no - he had to take a shot at Alfie. Deserved or not, it just prolonged the soap opera. Dumb move, Euge...

Nah, I don't think so. The fanbase has had time to properly galvanize itself into one of the two camps. Nothing Alfredsson says or does at this point will be enough to change anyone's mind.

Yep, I don't care what he says. :( The thanks he'll maybe give won't be genuine imo.

Melnyk needs to shut the **** up and figure out a way not to turn us into the Oakland A's of the NHL. Why the hell is he coming out and basically defaming Alfie? Whats the point of this?

He is talking out of both sides of his mouth and is really starting to piss me off. The team posted 14.5 million in profit last year (forbes) and just went to the second round of the playoffs, yet we are still broke? JUST **** already!!! He's a liar and a cheat. He's funding his own barbados lifestyle with this team's money.

I'm starting to turn on this Pejorative Slur.

How embarrassing and short-sighted could some of you be?

For everyone who keeps talking **** about Melnyk being "cheap" and keeping money away from the team, do you not remember the Sens teams that were spending to the cap every year?

Like how ****ing fickle and unappreciative could you guys be? One 41-year-old guy who wanted $6 million walks away and everyone starts calling the guy a cheapskate who's going to run the team in to the ground? What the ****?

I'm so sick of this straw man argument. What was the cap in those years? If you remember it was mid 50 million dollars. Thats what our internal budget is now.

Here are the facts: The league has increase revenue every year, therefore the revenue sharing and cap has gone up. Instead of Melnyk going with the movement he has maintained the same spending threshold. Lets just get some facts straight and not just say "he speant to the cap" the dude only wants to spend in the 50's regardless of our performance on the ice. He either breaks even if we have a terrible year or pockets the profits when we go deep.

Two thoughts.

One, given that this was clearly an Alfie vs Eugene standoff, and given that Alfie has always been honest (sometimes too honest) and Eugene has a history of not being honest business world, I owe it to Alfie to give him the benefit of the doubt in this situation.

Two, in regards to Alfie waiting to address the Ottawa media, he was very calculated about it. He waited and waited until Eugene first opened his mouth about it, and about the internal budget. Now, all Alfie has to do is elaborate on what he first hinted at in his conference call, and he'll be the honest man in this situation. Meanwhile, Bryan Murray has been made to look a fool by Eugene, who changed the narrative that we were getting Ryan regardless, in order to continue crying poor.

Smooth move, Euge. Somebody get this guy a muzzle.
