Yeah, so let's not be shy and say that objectively Oshie has been better than Johansson every year with the caps. And that no one would do a trade of Oshie, 2nd, 3rd for Johansson.

Not moving Johansson before the draft and protecting Schmidt instead was really really stupid though.

It's about asset management. The difference between Oshie and Mojo was probably worth the extra million in cap space + not having to lose Mojo for peanuts. That's the argument.

Mojo is also much younger while Oshie is now in the down track of his career.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here. Did Mojo not outproduce Oshie this year? Does one really expect Oshie to outproduce Mojo as Oshie hits his mid 30s? Despite being around for seemingly forever, Mojo is still only 26. There will be a day in the not too distant future where a Oshie for Mojo swap will look pretty good around these parts.

You can say he only had 59 points this season, but that would be ignoring the great postseason he just had and a great regular season before that where he had 70+ points. You should really be looking at the whole body of work and projecting forward rather than cherry-picking evidence that supports your preconceived notions.

But you don't have to cherry-pick the huge chunk of time Kuznetsov disappeared over the last 2 years. He was a ghost of himself the last large stretch of last season, our biggest disappointment and total non-factor in the 2016 playoffs, and started the first couple months of this year no better.

Does it bug me that we're paying a guy 7.8m who managed to vanish for 10 months without missing a game? Yeah.

The only way to excuse that long an absence is if he'd come back with a baby, and that would be weird. So given that's not the case, he's either an enigmatic guy prone to extremely streaky play (Paging Alex Semin!), or he's schizophrenic.

You pick. ;)

I'm curious as to how you reached this conclusion. Which comps were you looking at for $6.8M or less over 8 years?

i reached that conclusion with the fact that kuzy was MIA for atleast 33% of time in the last 2 years (last month and a half of 16 and playoffs first half of 17). was he elite the rest of the time? yes but im not happy with 7.8 for that when you add that we lost mojo (i know alot of ppl wanted him gone) for scraps and he was a pretty damn good 2nd liner and 1st pp unit guy

and i love kuzy probably my 2nd fav player on the team behind nicky

The Ryan Johansen deal will probably settle some nerves about the Kuznetsov deal.

What price point are you expecting for him that's going to make people feel better for Kuzy at 7.8?

One guy has at least two seasons with 26 and 33g and one 70+ point season. The other, one 70+ season and 1 20g season.

You think he makes more than Kuzy? If he's not at $7.25 per or more, I'm not feeling that much better.

Going into this off season I did think that there was a good possibility that Majo would get dealt though was thinking more of a package deal with grubauer and whatever additional maneuvers to protect schmidt (Bura just seems like a natural promotion for Majo).

All things being equal if even after all these moves the caps still had schmidt and lost grubauer I would be pretty OK with all this.

Don't worry. There is a plan. AHL analytics should save the day.

“Simon Fraser University student Cole Gawenda has landed a contract with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, but the 20-year-old entrepreneur will not have to lace up his skates to be of service.
"I've never actually played hockey," said Gawenda, operations manager of the analytics firm HockeyData.â€

Ten years ago it was the “boom, let’s go†that pitched them into an enterprise that would put them in the public eye — the decision to buy the Vancouver Canucks with partners Tom Gaglardi and Francesco Aquilini.

“When the opportunity came to invest in a group to buy the team, I took it to my dad and he got all excited. He is a big hockey fan and had hardly missed a home game in 40 years. So I looked at it and it made some sense, so we ended up on a journey that didn’t work out,†said Beedie.

The Canucks ended up in the hands of Aquilini. Beedie and Gaglardi sued Aquilini, claiming he had violated their partnership agreement, but their high profile case was lost in B.C. Supreme Court.

“I’m at peace with it all now and for me, I think it’s good it didn’t happen,†said Beedie. “But I’m glad Tom has since bought the Dallas Strs (hockey team).â€

This is a critical year for the front office and coaching staff. These moves need to pan out and point in some positive direction or we could be on another 3 year plan as Ovechkin's contract winds down.

Alternately, there's the danger that gmbm can get his new core assembled and convince Ted that he needs a couple of decades to get things right like McPhee did, so long as the team hits the playoffs every year.

The franchise is at another crossroads, imo. Expectations will be lower and it will be too easy to let it ride.

So you are saying Oshie plus 2nd and 3rd is worth less than MaJo and .875m cap space?

Plus Oshie is cost certainty. MaJo will get another raise in 2 seasons.

That's not today. Today Oshie and 2 picks looks a lot better than MaJo and .875m in cap space. Plus MaJo WILL get a raise in 2 years. Prob couldn't afford that either.

NYR fan living in your market, in disclosure even though we are divisional rivals, hard to hate you like other teams (Debs, Fish sticks, Philthy) in fact had respect for what your team looked and played like even through some hotly contested play off series. Which is getting to the point, who the hell is running this ship and how did this **** just suddenly happen?

To be serious, this wasn't sudden. Everyone who's been following the Caps contract situation closely knew that something similar to this was going to happen. The last 24 hours have been particularly rough, given that the Caps ultimately ended up losing one more forward (Johansson) than predicted, and hindsight now gives us the power to see that things could have (and should have) been handled in a different fashion heading into the expansion draft to give them the ability to hang onto Nate Schmidt.

Last season was the end of their window as a primary contender. Management said this two years ago. They went all-in, and it came up short. This is the blowback from that.

If they can get Burakovsky and Gurbuauer for $3.5 mil combined somehow...and call up the likes of Vrana/Djoos/Walker/Smith-Pelly/Boyd...they'd still have about 1.5 million to play with.

Ovie - Kuznetsov - Oshie
Vrana - Backstrom - Burakovsky
Connolly - Eller - Wilson
Walker - Beagle - Smith-Pelly/Boyd

Orlov - Niskanen
Djoos - Carlson
Orpik - Bowey

why is Nathan Walker always creeping onto our rosters, he's never put up good numbers offensively and I've never heard him described as an elite defensive player or a tough guy.

I really am asking, since I don't watch the AHL.

He's a non stop motor kinda guy. Perfect for the 4th line.

From his head coach

“I think when you look at our guys, Walker comes to mind,†said Mann, who is running the Capitals’ development camp this week. “He plays the game the right way. He’s a 200-foot player. He gets in on the forecheck. He has good stick detail.â€

I guess it would be nice to give him a shot.

I do think however that your 3rd line will end up being a black hole offensively as Wilson will disappoint once again next year. And eventually we'll have to bring up Boyd/Barber/Thomas to try to get something going. I'd prefer:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Burakovsky
Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie
Connolly-Eller-Boyd
Smith-Pelly/Walker-Beagle-Wilson

Let Wilson do what he does best, be an energy player and PK specialist, I doubt he'll ever become a reliable point producer.

I can see them trying to sign a bottom pairish vet Dman to hedge against rookie dman fails but even with that not a whole lot of depth this coming season if some dmen go down.

Ok? You could move Mojo for more in two years time, you only got such a crap return because of the cap crunch.

You're thinking in essentially terms of one year instead of two years.

may be a silly question but with markov unsigned, how much cap space do the caps have? i know its very little but any chance they can make a semi competitive offer for him?

if we get Burakovsky for 2.75 and then Grubauer for 2.0 than we would have no room left for anything but league minimum basically.

We can't make a competitive offer. Plus with Montreal no longer able to sign Radulov, I'd assume they just re-up Markov.
