I was wondering earlier this year around WJC’s why like seemingly every NHL draft pick of theirs was closer to the bottom in their scoring leaders.

Seems like they have an issue as their coach who’s gotten team results this year isn’t used to running a program with NHL talent. So a lot of those NHL guys are hitting the portal.

Whitelaw can fly.

Speaking of college hockey, is this team's only college free agent signing the last two years going to be a fringe AHLer? Meanwhile teams like Florida and Dallas just churn through the college free agency pool.

Bryce Brodzinski is free to sign now. Not sure the team would have interest anyway and he can go UFA in August. Pretty sure he wasn't at Dev Camp this summer so that may be an indication that the ship has sailed.

Is Michkov the youngest player on the team?

Nope. Zavragin and Volokhin are younger in net, Gulyayev is also going.

In terms of guys who would have been WJC eligible this year:

G:
Zavragin (2005)
Volokhin (2005)

D:
Gulyayev (2005)
Vydrenkov (2004)

F:
Michkov (2004)

Though tbh the "u-25" moniker is a bit of a joke. As probably 1/3 of the guys selected are ~26-32. It has effectively become, though, a Russia B national team when they use it.

Phantoms signed Matt Miller out of college and he scored in his first game.

Classic Flyers college FA signing. He scored 7 goals this year. He is vanilla, grit-laden average skater. His only redeeming quality -- 6' 3" -- and that is all you need to know about the Flyers philosophy. We are going to be a team of Keith Jones Clones. They never go for the skill guy who may have been a late bloomer. Of course, that person would also have to want to come here. They lost out on the Graf kid from Q; next is Rizzo

Most likely an ECHL guy for next year.

Doesn't excuse their inactivity in the college market though.

Too many NHL forwards under contract for next season - other orgs have NHL ice time (or at least the potential opportunity) to entice them.

To some degree yes, but most college free agents aren't good enough to play in the NHL next year (or ever). It's more about putting them through the minor league ringer and seeing who emerges. They seem to be more interested in signing minor league free agents (to 2 year deal at that) for "depth" even though they have no realistic chance of helping the big team.

Toronto seems to sign a top guy every year even though they have/had a roster crunch at the bottom of their roster for the last few years.

Haven't heard if he plans on going pro or not, but Cole Moore is an interesting UDFA from the NCAA. Big goalie at 6'5 and had a decent year in Bowling Green. It would certainly be nice to add yet another goaltender to the pipeline.
