It’s been a long time since teams outside of Saskatchewan and Alberta have all stepped up at the same time to make Canada West this interesting. Lots of parity and playoffs should be fun.

Have you seen any of the Bear's games this year? With the loss of Philp, Kirchenko, Pawnlenchuk, Alberta seems to be more vulnerable?
There is more competition at the top of the conference now with improved programs out of Mount Royal and UBC. Playoffs will be interesting for sure.

Have watched some games and this years team is slightly a step below the talent level of the previous couple seasons. Goaltending struggles have sunk them for a few of their losses. Still will be a threat come playoff time, but most likely won’t have home ice advantage for every round like they usually do.

Goal: Man: Hawryluk (46 shots 41 saves), UBC: Lane (30 shots 26 saves)

This was a high-scoring wide-open game, just like the two games these teams played in Manitoba. The game seemed to tilt in the favour of one side at a time. The Bisons jumped to a 2-0 lead, fell behind 3-2, the rotated goals until an empty-netter put it away. This was the only good game of the weekend so far. The other scores so far are 9-2, 8-2, 7-2, and 6-2. Details follow.

Bedrock U racked up their 17th straight win to wrap up this series. The Dinos‛ 8 goals came on just 21 shots, which is a shocker.

Here‛s some weird numbers. The Evil Monkeys led 3-1 after the 1st. Sask outshot them 14-7 in the 2nd, but the Apes scored 4 goals on their 7 shots. The 3rd was a non-event.

Quick Summary
Man: J. Hooker (02:58 1st), D. Skoleski (02:26 2nd)
UBC: C. McNabb (00:29 2nd), T. Rask (11:07 2nd), C. Douglas (05:01 3rd), J. Wismer (15:11 3rd), J. Williams (18:27 3rd)
Goal: Man: Harkness (52 shots 48 saves), UBC: Luding (24 shots 22 saves)

The Bisons were without not only Brett Davis (who scored for Canada in Saturday‛s semi-final), but also leading defenceman Chase Hartje. Through two periods it was 2-2 and a free-flowing hockey game. However, in the 3rd the Bisons had nothing left, were outshot 23-6, and were clinging to life until a late insurance goal and empty-netter put it away for the T-irds.

Next weekend the Herd hosts Holy Trinity, and need that 4-point sweep.

This sweep ended a 9-game losing streak for the Family Guys. The good news is that this vaults them into a tie for 6th place. The bad news is that they will have a tough time winning any more games. They had early season wins over Alberta, MRU, UBC, and Sask. But those were a long time ago, i.e. before the 9-game losing streak. Beating UBC, MRU, or Calgary will be a tall order.

IMO, I see Calgary (38pts) locking up first place in the West. They have four games left with Mount Royal/GMAC.
All eyes are on the second bye!
Alberta with 36pts, who just swept bottom feeders Trinity, have a weak schedule left with lowly Regina and Manitoba, who has dropped 8 straight, so I can see them finishing with 40 pts.
Mount Royal has 35pts and has 6 games remaining, but has the much tougher schedule in games with Calgary/Saskatchewan and GMAC.
Third place will draw Regina in round #1, while UBC will likely play UofS.

The last time the Bisons played Holy Trinity they were on a four-game winning streak. They have started the new year on a six-game losing streak (seven overall). The last four games have been played without Brett Davis, who was off being the leading goal-scorer for Team Canada winning a gold medal at the Universiade. His addition should make a big difference here.

Of note, the Bisons trail MacEwan and Regina by a point. However, other than these games against Holy Trinity, it is fairly likely that all three teams in the "race" could go winless. The Bisons really need all four points up for grabs. If so, they will likely have a lot of wiggle room for a playoff berth.

The last time Bedrock U lost a game, was on October 14th, by 7-2 against the Bluegars. The following night, the Dinos won 4-3 and followed that with 16 more consecutive wins. So can MRU end the streak they started? I would say there is a pretty good chance. Friday night‛s game is the Crowchild Classic at the Saddledome, returning after a Covid absence. Saturday night‛s game is at the Bluegar Barn.

The Evil Monkeys have won 15 of their last 16 games against the Banjo-Cats, including two games back in October. Against the Top 5 teams in the CW, Regina is 0-11-1 so far this year, with six such games remaining. Is there a couple of wins in there? As for the Apes, they need all four points in order to get a shot at 2nd place and a bye into the semi-finals.

The Family Guys picked up an OTW when these teams met back in October, back when Mac was splitting every series they played. Last weekend, Mac swept TWU to break a 9-game losing streak. A win this weekend won‛t be easy for Mac, however it is their best chance for another win this season. They finish with games against MRU and Calgary.

Just getting the Friday report ready as I am almost out the door to Saturday‛s game. Busy Saturday activity intervenes.

The Bisons tried a new way to lose, outshooting their opponent 43-30 yet losing 7-1. The Bisons needed a 4-point weekend. Combined with Regina‛s 2 points and MacEwan‛s one point, the Bisons not only have to win the Saturday rematch, they will have to defeat Calgary and/or Alberta.

January 28: BISONS WIN WITHOUT SHOWING UP FOR THE 3RD PERIOD

➤ TWU: KLESSENS TALLIES FOUR POINTS IN 7-6 LOSS TO MANITOBA (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons beat Spartans 7-6 in marathon win (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
TWU: J. Klessens (17:08 1st), M. Spafford (17:42 1st), J. Penner (17:24 2nd), D. DuBois (03:07 3rd), D. DuBois (16:57 3rd), J. Klessens (18:12 3rd)
Man: C. Veloso (04:35 1st), H. Ostir (13:53 1st), B. Davis (15:05 1st), T. Apetagon (06:38 2nd), D. Thiessen (14:44 2nd), H. Ostir (16:49 2nd), D. Skoleski (06:04 3rd)
Goal: TWU: Audet (25 shots 18 saves), Man: Harkness (31 shots 25 saves)

The Bisons dominated the 1st and 2nd periods so much that they took some time off in the 3rd period. The Herd led 3-0 early, 3-2 after the 1st, 6-3 after the 2nd, and 7-4 with less than 14 minutes to go. Two late goals for Holy Trinity perhaps made the score look closer than it really was. Still hard to overlook those 3 shots in the 3rd period.

This was extremely chippy. Holy Trinity had two 4-minute penalties, and the Bisons had one 4-minute and one 5-minute. In total, TWU was 3-for-8 on the PP, and the Bisons were 5-for-7.

A much better performance will be needed next weekend when the Bisons travel to the Town of Bedrock.

Here was win #19 in a row for Bedrock U. After Friday's game was a toss-up, this was a decisive victory. The Dinos need one win against the Bisons next weekend to wrap up 1st place. The Bluegars could finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th.

Two late goals by the Banjo-Cats made the scoreline look somewhat respectable. Quite a switch from Friday night's Regina win. The Evil Monkeys often look like they have found their form, only to stumble again. That's what the Bisons are hoping for. Alberta has the bye next week and then travel to the Wayne Fleming Arena to close the season.

The Bisons are off to the Town of Bedrock for what may be Mission Impossible. The so-called race for 6th place is one where a single upset win could well tip the balance. Last weekend, Regina picked up two points against Saudi Alberta and MacEwan got a point in British California. So if the Bisons can end the Dinos‛ 19 game win streak they could vault into the playoffs.

Each side will rely upon certain PPG players. The Dinos have Riley Stotts (32 points), Jake Gricius (30 points), and Max Patterson (24 points), all in 24 games. The Bisons counter with Brett Davis (29 points in 20 games, plus 7 goals and 5 assists in 7 games at Universiade) and Devon Skoleski (26 points in 23 games).

The Bison goaltending has ranged from sub-standard to average, and it better be average or better if they want to steal away some points this weekend.

This is a home-and-home battle for glory in banjoland. The Banjo-Mutts have looked at times like a potential contender, and then like also-rans at others. They came close to ending Calgary‛s streak, twice, withy overtime losses. They need 4 points here, and lots of help, if they want any hope of hosting a quarter-final series.

In the Town of Bedrock its yabba dabba doo time. This was their 20th consecutive win and assures them of 1st place. The last time they did so was 1997. (They lost to Alberta in the semi-final round two games to none that season.) Will Mr. Slate take the team out on the town for a celebration? If so, maybe the Bisons can steal the point they need for a playoff berth. The sad thing is that this was the closest game of the night in the CW.

Oddly, the Banjo-Cats scratched and clawed their way to a 2-0 lead. Then the Banjo-Mutts came back to dominate. In the 2nd period the Mutts started down by 2-1 and ended up by 4-2. In that same period, the Mutts outshot the Kittens 17-1. The teams head south for Saturday‛s rematch. Friday‛s results confine the Mutts to 5th place and a road-trip for the quarter-final round.

The Bluegars easily dispatched of the Family Guys, led by Sawchuk‛s 20th goal and Yaremko‛s 14th goal. The stats don‛t look good for the rematch when the teams move south for the rematch. Although sitting in 4th, the Bluegars play on Saturday and the evil Monkeys and T-irds have the night off. Therefore a win would vault MRU into a tie for 2nd place.

Manitoba has been on a death dive in Canadawest!
Hollywood we need your insight!
since the start of term 2 Manitoba is like 1-9, and sort of have a chance at playoffs still....which seems wild imo
but have to basically win out next weekend and hope some others have negative results.
Golden Bears are in town needing wins for a top two seeding so....
winning percentage has been under .400 for years
haven't seen the playoffs since 2019 and then just barely. and missed a few in a row prior...
this was a strong program and i thought that the move of the WHL franchise would help keep the Manitoba recruits at U of Manitoba.
lucky for them there are some new College teams in CW to help them hide in the lower echelon weeds
something is outta whack imo
thoughts?

That's a huge choke for Mount Royal, who blew a chance for the second bye. I can't see Alberta dropping a game to Manitoba and Mount Royal has the Huskies for a double date.

I hate to pick on the program, but it should be very close to the bottom of the Hollywood rankings.

A few things you need to know:
1) Manitoba has the same population as Saskatchewan, but only one CIS program. They should be near the top of CanadaWest if they merely attract their homegrown WHL talent.
2) There are a number of WHL grads attending UManitoba but choosing to not play for the Bisons because the coach has a poor reputation. This has been an issue for many years now.
3) Travel is a huge issue when you are 7 hours to the nearest competitor. Every road trip is a big one.
4) UManitoba is what academics call a "Commuter School" ... >90% of the students are from Winnipeg and live at home (and commute to school). This kills school support for athletics, because nobody lives on/near campus.
5) There is a good Senior league around Winnipeg that attracts a lot of ex-Junior players. For guys who want to keep playing for fun but don't want the travel schedule, it's a good alternative.

But i think alot of athletic programs have forced the hands of coaches like this Bison coach.
They dont have any real source of ancillary resources to draw upon like hockey schools, spring or fall camps as these all dried up during COVID and the athletic departments are not too keen on bringing back anything that might need a year or two to reestablish themselves. if it might lose money in the short term not interested.
These resources were always part of their growth and ability to compete.
Most athletic programs are tapped out and full of way to many administrative positions that were all created during more prosperous times. Hired to run or over see these ancillary programs. now they are on the run trying to justify their own jobs.
Most coaches are left holding an empty hand bag and still under pressure to be successful.
I am not sure that the WHL team in their rink has done any favours for either the Mens or Womens Bison.
they are constantly having to leave their dressing rooms for WHL visitors and storing their gear and then moving back in when they are done....there were plans to address this but again $ dried up.
tough times but check out the other athletic programs at U of M, they are all average.
and i am told they deem that as acceptable.
AND
Most believe it to be contagious not just in CW but USPORTS.
The user pay model is upon us gentlemen. FISU is a fine example of that

Great insight by both you and MiamiHockey.
Without outside funding it's difficult to maintain a high level program. Couple that with travel issues and alternative places to play and the hockey program will suffer. It also doesn't help when the university teams are treated like 2nd class citizens in their own rink.
