Quite a good weekend for Hayden Ostir. The three goals here gave him four for the weekend and ten on the season. This was a preetty good battle, put away with an empty-netter to end a spirited late game rally.

February 10: MONKEYS PUT BISONS ON EDGE OF ELIMINATION

Each side is involved in one of the two 3-way races on this final weekend of the regular season. The Evil Monkeys are in the race for 2-3-4 where they hold a 1-point lead over UBC and MRU. The Bisons are in the race for 6-7-8 where Regina and MacEwan are tied with a 2-point lead over the Bisons. Friday night‛s results left everything intact.

For the Bisons to be successful, they must win Saturday afternoon‛s rematch and both the the Banjo-Cats and Family Guys must lose in regulation. If my guess is correct, that would leave the Apes in 4th (if they lose in regulation) or 3rd (if they lose in overtime). A Monkey victory, however, assures them of 2nd and a bye to the semi-finals. Here are the tie-breaker rules:

If two or more teams are tied in points then the following tie breaking criteria shall be used to break the tie. A win in regulation time and a win in overtime are treated as equal. A loss in regulation time and a loss in overtime are treated as equal.

a. Two teams tied: The following shall determine the final league standings:
1. The best win/loss record in head to head games between the two teams.
2. If still tied, the number of wins in league play.
3. If still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

b. Three or more teams tied: If three or more teams are tied, the following steps shall be used to determine the rank order of the tied teams:
1. The best win/loss record in head to head games between the three or more tied teams.
2. If three or more teams are still tied, the highest number of wins in league play.
3. If three or more teams are still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

Note: Once a team is ranked so that it is no longer tied with any other team(s) at any one of these three steps, that team shall be ranked accordingly in the final standings. Any remaining tied teams shall then proceed to step 1 of the appropriate tiebreaker (depending on the number of teams still tied) to continue the process until all teams are ranked in the final standings.

Hopefully they‛ll bring back the Timbits between periods feature on Saturday. They‛ve gotten away from that this year.

The Herd played a pretty solid game. They utilized the traditional blueprint to beat the Monkeys, i.e. hit them lots, and let them take a lot of shots from outside the slot area. The weakness was a powerplay that went 0-for-6 with few grade A chances.

At the end, they moved Hartje back to the blueline and condensed the forwards.

Since coach Mike Sirant is retiring at the end of the year, they had a pre-game ceremony for him. My expectation is that this will help the team next year. Not that I expect Barry Trotz to return to the campus, but the team is in dire need of some renewal.

Looking at these stats, it looks like Bedrock U is poised to hit 25 straight wins on Saturday. I see that Mac‛s #1 goaltender (Abel) was not dressed for this one. The Family Guys would lose a 2-way tie-breaker with Regina or a 3-way tie-breaker with Manitoba thrown in. So they need at least a point, and some help, on Saturday.

This game was actually tied well into the 2nd period. In the end, the T-irds racked up their 11th straight win. Right now, the Birds and Bisons need to form an alliance. If they both win, they get what they want (2nd for UBC, 6th for Manitoba).

I'm taking UBC over GM 2-0. UBC riding a 12-0 run, but all of those wins are from the bottom of the pack, except a sweep of USask. UBC has had success in recent playoff years.
Mount Royal over Saskatchewan 2-1. Mount Royal are dangerous with that dominating top line of Yaremko and Sawchuck. The Huskies have been inconsistent in the second half.
Calgary and Alberta with the first round bye's.

The TSN Turning Point on Saturday occurred 14 minutes into the 2nd period when the Evil Monkeys were leading 3-2 and the Bisons appeared to have a shot. The Monkeys dumped the puck into the Bison zone and goaltender Simon Harkness came out to play it and tried to shoot it behind the net and around the glass. Instead he shot it IN his net, with nobody around, making the score 4-2. Not giving up, the Herd came out on the next shift and created mayhem in the Monkeys‛ zone, hitting a goalpost and a crossbar in the process. However, the next Ape shot was a low danger shot which trickled under Harkness to make it 5-2. Back-to-back unassisted goals, and that was all she wrote. The remainder of the game was simply playing out the string.

In a strange ending to the season, both quarter-finals will be return match-ups from the regular season finale. These teams will play the 4-5 series in Calgary. I‛m not sure how the Banjo-Mutts‛ goaltenders looked, but these numbers are alarming. Nolan Yaremko scored his 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th goals of the season. The Bluegars miss out on a quarter-final bye by one point and must surely be looking at those points dropped to MacEwan and Holy Trinity late in the season with a great deal of regret.

It seems appropriate that the Banjo-Cats backed into the playoffs with two regulation losses. The three teams “fighting” for the final playoff berth went a combined 0-6-0 on the weekend. The T-irds cruised to a win in this game, and these teams will meet again next weekend in the quarter-finals.

I'm taking UBC over GM 2-0. UBC riding a 12-0 run, but all of those wins are from the bottom of the pack, except a sweep of USask. UBC has had success in recent playoff years.
Mount Royal over Saskatchewan 2-1. Mount Royal are dangerous with that dominating top line of Yaremko and Sawchuck. The Huskies have been inconsistent in the second half.
Calgary and Alberta with the first round bye's.

Not that it really matters, but Western finished 7th and Guelph finished 8th based on ROW. USports standings are incorrect; OUA standings are correct. Men's Ice Hockey - Ontario University Athletics

Laurier is very fortunate to have secured the last playoff spot - Guelph and Western had 12 OTLs between them - one bounce of the puck the other way in any of those games and that team would have finished 6th.

Oddly enough, the Bluegars swept the Banjo-Mutts, 3-1 and 6-0 at home, and 3-2 and 8-1 last weekend in Saskatown. The Bluegars had late losses against MacEwan and Holy Trinity, which cost them a first round bye. The Bluegars outscored their opponents 119-65, and Sask barely edged their opponents 91-90. The Mutts have shown flashes of brilliance, so cannot be counted out.

Although the Banjo-Cats were also swept by their opponents, they at least got a point for an OTL against the T-irds. At home, Regina lost 6-1 and 3-2 in OT. and on the coast last weekend they lost 6-3 and 4-1. UBC is riding a 12-game winning streak. Regina enters on a 1-6-1 skid. The stats over the last three years really favour UBC, however there was a time when these teams were fighting in the sub-.500 segment of the standings. A win for Regina would be the biggest surprise of the opening round.

Of course, the Bluegars stifled all of the Mutts. They seldom raised a fuss on offence. The winner of Sunday‛s matinee will face the Bedrock Dinos next weekend.

The T-irds are now off to Edmontown to face the Evil Monkeys next weekend.

These teams have met in the last two playoffs (2021 was cancelled). In 2020, Saskatchewan won a semi-final 2-0. In 2022, Calgary won a quarter-final 2-1.

The story of the season is Bedrock U‛s 23 game winning streak entering the playoffs. They started going 3-3-0 in the pre-season, then lost on Friday and won on Saturday in their first three series. Then BOOM! The biggest winning streak in CW history, including 11 series sweeps. But don‛t count out the Banjo-Mutts. They scored 91 goals, and gave up 90, which seems very .500ish. However, they are coming off a mild surprise win over the Bluegars.

Alberta is coming off a bye and UBC beat Regina in two straight games in the quarter-finals.

The series may come down to who gets the goaltending. Both sides went with a 3-some and before settling down. Alberta‛s Ethan Kruger‛s stats were: 12-2-0, .923 S%, 2.00 GAA. He is now the clear #1. UBC‛s Kaeden Lane was: 10-2-1, .906 S%, 2.67 GAA.

The weekend started a day early in the Town of Bedrock, where the biggest winning streak in CW history has now indeed gone down in history.

The Banjo-Mutts treated the Dinos like a whole bunch of fire hydrants, stifling them at every movement. In fact, the Bedrock Boys managed just 3 shots in the 2nd period. Trailing 3-1 entering the 3rd period, Jake Gricius (in 28 games, 15-19-34 in the regular season) scored two quick ones to tie the game and make it anybody‛s game.

IMO, this was imperative for UBC to strike first and they did snapping a 3-3 tie late in the third.
I expect Alberta to come back with a lot of energy tonight.
Will Kruger start again for the Bears or do they go with Matt Berlin? Surprised to see Nick Schneider not in the lineup?
Calgary, outshot by the Huskies win it in the third period 4-2.
I thought Calgary would handle Saskatchewan at home, but this series is a real toss up.

The Banjo-Mutts actually seemed to be the better team for most of this game. However, it was very defensive, and tied 1-1, until three goals (two by the Dinos) were scored in just over a two-minute stretch of the 3rd. An empty-netter then put it away. Sask has a real chance to pull off back-to-back upsets.

This was a good battle, marred by a severe headshot upon Evil Monkey Daneel Lategan. Jonny Lambos of the T-irds was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct. I believe he gets an automatic one-game suspension (at least) for game two. Lategan was permitted back in the game a long time later, and scored. In my opinion, any player clearly concussed should not be permitted to return.

In any event, the T-irds built a 3-1 lead after two periods before the Monkeys stormed back to tie it in the 3rd. Overall, I would have to call game two a toss-up.

The score is a bit misleading here. The Mutts managed to check Calgary pretty well, holding them to 24 shots (one into an empty net). The problem for them was they never got the saves when needed. Plus Bedrock U held them to just 18 shots. Of note, the Mutts were trailing 4-1 after two, but pulled their goalie early. They gave up an empty-netter with 7 minutes left.

The Dinos will now host the conference championship and have secured a berth in the University Cup.

This has been a heck of a series so far. It is hard to see both CW games at once (plus HNIC and the Scotties), but this has been quite good. The T-irds switched goaltenders, which could be an edge for them in game 3. Schwebius also held them in the game for long stretches. I missed the beginning, where UBC built a 2-0 lead, but thereafter the Evil Monkeys carried the play. The difference was the powerplays. The Monkeys went 3-for-6, the T-irds went 0-for-5. The GWG was in the last 2 minutes on a tough call against UBC. One of their players was skating by a defenceman with one hand on his stick. He lifted it to get by but boinked him in the face.

Briercrest has gone from perennial doormat to home ice advantage in the quarter-finals, against NAIT which at one time waltzed through unbeaten. After two close games, this was relatively easy for the Evil Monkeys. They really took over in the 2nd period, where they built a 3-1 lead.

So the #1 and #2 seeds are in the final after receiving scares in the semi-finals. Bedrock U will host the final, a unique opportunity for them. They lost the final to Alberta in 2011 and 2014, and to Saskatchewan in 2012. They last hosted and won finals in 1995 (over Manitoba) and 1996 (over Regina). En route to the 1996 final, they hosted and beat Alberta in the semi-finals. I believe that was the last time they hosted Alberta in the playoffs.
