October 15: SATURDAY MORNING LINKS

Quick summary:
Man: D. Thiessen (03:12 2nd) , M. Dyck (03:41 2nd) , T. Apetagon (04:10 2nd) , S. Stewart (03:36 1st OT)
Reg: T. Barnstable (06:02 1st) , T. Adams (01:20 2nd) , M. Culling (18:10 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (35 shots, 32 saves), Reg: Evanoff (29 shots, 25 saves)

What stands out in this game is that the Bison top line was held off the scoreboard, but three players nailed their first of the season. Dylan Thiessen (with a goal and two assists) and defencemen Mitch Dyck and Sam Stewart all scored their firsts. Tony Apetagon scored his 3rd goal of the season, and it was also the third Bison goal in a 58 second span of the 2nd period to erase a 2-0 deficit.

The Banjo-Cats scored with their goaltender pulled to force the OT. Stewart‛s OT winner was scored in the 4-on-4 segment of OT on a 2-on-1 setup from Thiessen.

Ross Hawryluk gave the Herd another solid performance in goal. This is just what the Bisons needed. Hopefully some of the injured players will soon return.

Goal: Sask: Ross (37 shots, 34 saves), UBC: Lane (22 shots, 18 saves)

This sweep moves Sask into the upper echelon whilst UBC falls into that murky middle. This would be a good time to point out that the two teams UBC will face just once are Alberta and MRU. Based on last year‛s standings, this was like winning the lottery.

In this game, Jared Dmytriw scored his league-leading 5th and 6th goals of the season to lead the Banjo-Mutts. There are now five Ukrainians in the CW‛s top 20 scorers, plus three of the top 10 goaltenders. They should get a ?Team Ukraine? together over Christmas time for an exhibition game.

Bedrock U rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take this one in double-overtime. Of note, the Dinos‛ Jake Gricius scored his 5th goal of the season. This the 3rd weekend in a row where Bedrock U lost on Friday and then won on Saturday.

Ukraine-75x50.jpg

I randomly tossed out the possibility of a Team Ukraine from the CW in an earlier post. So I looked up rosters and plucked out all the Ukrainian surnames I could find. Now, there may be more players with a Ukrainian mom and a non-Ukrainian dad who could expand this roster. There are four goaltenders, five defencemen, and 15 forwards. Of those 15 forwards, EIGHT had a point-per-game or better last year.

GOALTENDERS
1 Carl Stankowski - Calgary (2nd) 1-1-0, 2.33 GAA, .929 S%
34 Ross Hawryluk - Manitoba (1st) 2-1-0, 2.95 GAA, .917 S%
30 Adam Evanoff - Regina (1st) 1-1-0, 3.15 GAA, .890 S%
30 Carl Tetachuk - Calgary (1st) 2-2-0, 4.11 GAA, .872 S%

DEFENCEMEN
9 Zach Wytinck - Calgary (2nd) 6 GP 2-2-4
22 Ethan Sakowich - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 2-1-3
4 Parker Malchuk - Manitoba (1st) 4 GP 0-2-2
27 Jade Senkoe - MRU (1st) 3 GP 0-1-1
26 Carter Wolski - Alberta (2nd) 0 GP

FORWARDS
13 Riley Sawchuk - MRU (2nd) 5 GP 4-8-12*
23 Nolan Yaremko - MRU (3rd) 6 GP 3-8-11*
10 Josh Prokop - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 4-6-10*
15 Jared Dmytriw - Sask (3rd) 6 GP 6-3-9*
10 Devon Skoleski - Manitoba (4th) 4 2-6-8*
14 Eric Florchuk - Alberta (2nd) 6 GP 2-4-6*
25 Jaxan Kaluski - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 2-0-2*
20 Aiden Bulych - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 0-3-3*
11 Scott Mickoski - Regina (3rd) 4 GP 2-1-3
23 Alec Zawatsky - Sask (2nd) 6 GP 2-1-3
27 Merritt Oszytko - MacEwan (1st) 2 GP 2-0-2
22 Marc Pasemko - MacEwan (1st) 4 GP 1-0-1
11 Chantz Petruic - Sask (2nd) 2 GP 0-1-1
12 Eric Houk - Regina (1st) 4 GP 0-1-1
13 Tanner Fincaryk - Alberta (1st) 1 GP 0-0-0

* denotes player who had at least a point-per-game in 2021-22

That set of forwards would be by far and away the best set of forwards assembled by a USports hockey team. The goaltending would be okay. The defence is short on both numbers and experience. As stated at the outset, this list may have left out those half-Ukrainians. If some all-star defencemen are amongst that group, this team would do well against high-level competition. I'd pay to watch them!

Last year the Bison playoff hopes ultimately fell due to their late-January split with Holy Trinity (see links), followed by a sweep at the hands of Regina. Last weekend, the Bisons reversed their results against Regina. This weekend, the Bisons have an opportunity to remedy their record against TWU. Last year and this, most TWU opponents pick up four points each weekend and the Bisons need to be one of them.

The goaltending, which looked atrocious in their home pre-season games and against the T-irds, was a strength last weekend. Ross Hawryluk started and won both games and now has a very good stats line (2-1-0, 2.95 GAA, .917 S%).

Despite having played just 4 games, the Bisons continue to have three of the top 12 scorers in the CW: Chase Hartje (3-7-10), Brett Davis (4-4-8), and Devon Skoleski (2-6-8).

I‛ll be checking the injury front. I believe that last weekend, other than the backup goaltenders, the Bisons had no healthy scratches. Four players have yet to play in the regular season: defenceman Liam Schioler and forwards Geordie Keane, Linden McCorrister, and Eric Fawkes. Jonny Hooker left the Saturday game against UBC with what appeared to be a shoulder/arm injury of some sort.

Holy Trinity has been solidly whacked in five of their six games thus far. The exception was an OTL against Sask, where the Spartans blew a 5-1 lead. They have been outscored by 37-13. They lead the league in PIMs with 102 (tied with MRU), whereas the saintly Bisons are tied for last with Regina, at just 38.

One big peculiarity in the schedule is that the matinee game is on Friday. That surely makes for difficult travel arrangements.

This is the feature series of the weekend, and will likely draw a great deal of attention outside of the CW as well. IMO, Alberta is the cream of the crop, TWU is the weakest, and the rest are still to prove themselves. One cannot argue with the Mutts‛ results, but unless they can do well here I would still have them in that murky-middle of CW near-contenders. They did nearly lose to TWU, split with Calgary, and had a tight series with UBC.

These teams each won once against the other last year, but in the last 5 years Bedrock U holds a 12-2 edge over the Banjo-Cats. So far the Dinos are 0-3-0 on Fridays and 3-0-0 on Saturdays. I have a hunch that Regina peaked last year and will be just a notch below this year. To prevent that, a good road weekend against a mid-power like this would help. Regina lost a lot of scoring, but rookie Matt Culling has 4 goals and 3 assists in four games and is a player to watch. The Dinos are led by 2nd year Jake Gricius. Last year he was 2-3-5 for the season, and this year he is 5-1-6 already.

This is a home-and-home weekend. The Family Guys have had two splits and are coming off a bye week. Nothing wrong with a split against Regina, and a major celebration for their split with Alberta. They started strong a year ago, then fell apart. The Bluegars were blitzed by the Evil Monkeys on opening weekend, then blitzed Holy Trinity. They are coming off a solid 3-point weekend against the Dinos. Those Mythical Mutants need some points on weekends like this if they intend to stay in playoff contention.

This matinee started at 1:00 PDT, after originally being announced as a 2:15 PDT game time. Grrrr. Hawryluk has found his form in goal. Although not a difficult opponent, he did make the saves needed for a comfortable victory. This win puts the Herd above .500 for the first time.

Of note, Bison defenceman Liam Schioler was back in he line-up in this one.

The Banjo-Mutts came up with a big win to at least claim temporary possession of first place. I was a bit surprised by the way they controlled the Evil Monkeys. There was a bit of an interruption with all CWTV feeds, so I missed a good chunk of all games. And, with three games starting at the exact same time, I missed more than I saw of the out-of-town games.

The Banjo-Cats disintegrated throughout this game. The 1st period saw them outshoot Bedrock U 12-6 and outscore them 2-1. The Dinos‛ Friday night curse looked to be real at that point. The Dinos gathered steam throughout, outshooting Regina 14-7 in the 2nd period and 18-3 in the 3rd. The paltry three shots in the 3rd period showed that the Cats were not really in this at the end.

TWU: D. DuBois (00:59 2nd) , L. Spadafora (02:48 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (32 shots, 30 saves), TWU: Audet (30 shots, 27 saves)

First, the Bisons were down one more forward as Devon Skoleski (11 points in 5 games) did not suit up for this one. Defenceman Zach Patrick was moved to a forward spot, and notched his first goal. Dylan Thiessen (6 points in 6 games) was also injured in this game, but did return.

I have to credit Holy Trinity. This was their best game of the season by far. It was Alumni Night, so the players maybe wanted to impress their predecessors. The Bisons seemed to want to just let the clock tick down in the 3rd period without suffering any more injuries. They could use the week to recover.

The Family Guys could barely muster a shot on Friday and badly needed to turn things around in this one. They boosted their shot total from 11 to 39. They were a completely different side. It appeared that they may have won the game with a goal in the 4-on-4 segment of OT, but it was waived off. This gives the Mythical Mutants three straight splits, which they must find to be satisfactory. The Bluegars seem to be on the verge of a breakthrough but never quite make it. They are now 4-2-2.

Bedrock U, as usual, won the Saturday game of the double-header. The Banjo-Cats were disappointing in this one. They did lose a lot of offence from last year and it seems like they are playing with little confidence right now. Of note Jake Gricius scored his 7th goal in 8 games for the Dinos.

This OTW for the Evil Monkeys made the weekend series 3-2 on points to the Banjo-Mutts, and leaves the teams tied for 1st place. This was a pretty good game I had playing in the background whilst trying to watch the Jets, Bisons, MLB playoffs, and CFL. Sask‛s broadcast quality has taken a nosedive this year. They have a silly little girl who giggles at her own jokes and some guy who just plays along. Very disappointing.

The Bluegars are somewhat of an enigmatic team. At their best, they are a contender and a threat to win a berth in the U-Cup. But just when they seem ready for a breakthrough, they falter. They are blessed with two of the best forwards in the country: Nolan Yaremko (3 goals and 10 assists in 8 games) and Riley Sawchuk (7 goals and 8 assists in 7 games).

The Bisons have some lofty stats themselves, with three players in the Top Ten despite having played just six games. Chase Hartje (4-8-12, leads CW defencemen in scoring), Devon Skoleski (4-7-11, in 5 games), and Brett Davis (4-6-10). After last weekend it appears that the Bison defence is fully recovered from injuries. However, they might need to move two of them to the forward lines due to the injuries up front.

The Achilles heel in the Bison home games was in goal. That problem has evidently been addressed on the road, where Ross Hawryluk found his form. Hopefully he can keep that going at The Rink, where the Bisons appear for the last time.

The linked story is on Tony Apetagon, a kid from a remote northern community getting a chance at a top 6 forward spot on the team.

So far the Banjo-Cats have played three series. They started with 2 points against MacEwan, then had 1 point against Manitoba, then no points against Calgary. The trend is not good, especially when the Evil Monkeys are coming to town. Regina really needs a split here to stay within shouting distance of playoff contention.

The Family Guys have beaten Alberta, so beating the T-irds is not out of the question. They have splits in all three series so far, the others being against Regina and MRU. Their wins have been close games, two in overtime. Their losses have been decisive, one by 3 goals and two by 4 goals. So it might be said that they have squeezed maximum points from their performance thus far. I am not sold on UBC‛s goaltending. If one of their newcomers can solidify that position perhaps they could sweep a series like this one.

NOTE: Saskatchewan, Trinity Western, and Calgary all have byes because there are 16 weeks to the season and each team needs two bye weeks.

➤ UofM: MHKY: Special teams and zone time a major factor as Mount Royal beats Manitoba 4-0 (with boxscore)
➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: October 28, 2022 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
MRU: R. Holmes (15:36 1st) , A. Fyten (16:07 1st) , K. Morrisseau (09:48 2nd) , C. Bouchard (10:26 3rd)
Man: none
Goal: MRU: Sims (13 shots, 13 saves), Man: Hawryluk (50 shots, 46 saves)

The good news: The Bisons managed to shut down the Sawchuk/Yaremko duo. The bad news: They sacrificed any offence of their own in the process. Here‛s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
34 Hawryluk (1 Harkness)

Defence
4 Malchuk - 16 Hartje
12 Patrick - 2 Stewart
27 Gottfried - 8 Toth

Forwards
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
21 Basarab - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun
18 Hooker - 29 King - 13 Sutter

Scratches
35 Murphy - 5 Schioler - 6 Dyck
14 Keane - 23 Fawkes - 26 McCorrister

MOUNT ROYAL
Goal
35 Sims (33 Berry)

Defence
25 Aquilon - 5 Ladyman
2 Walker - 24 Jensen
3 Gould - 16 Blake

Forwards
23 Yarekmo - 13 Sawchuk - 12 Bouchard
19 Gillisss - 9 Regnier - 11 Fyten
8 Moe - 10 Holmes - 18 Stevenson
28 Rawji - 14 Morrisseau - 26 Power

Scratches
3 Pow - 17 Tarzwell - 22 Hakim
27 Senkoe - 34 Farkas

The stats show that the Bluegars were 1-for-8 on the PP, however two more goals were scored just seconds after a Bison penalty expired. Hawryluk had a good game in goal and has clearly emerged as the go-to guy. A few years ago, these teams played the heaviest games in the CW where the boards were rattling all game long. It is not like that now. Most penalties were cheap garbage that could have been ignored.

Saturday night‛s game is thankfully the last one at The Rink. After that it is back to the fully renovated Wayne Fleming Arena. Including pre-season, the Bisons are now 0-5-0 at The Rink, 0-1-0 at The Ralph, and 7-0-0 elsewhere.

Goal: Alta: Berlin (29 shots, 26 saves), Reg: Evanoff (36 shots, 29 saves)

The stats on this one were not as bad as the scoreline. The play was relatively even. For the Evil Monkeys, Prokop‛s goals were his 5th and 6th of the season, and Smallwood‛s was his 7th. The Banjo-Cats have nobody with that type of finish this year.

The scoreline is a bit misleading here as well. It was 4-2 with just over a minute to play. Each side had nine PPs, but the T-irds scored four times on theirs whilst The Family Guys scored just once.

Goal: MRU: Sims (13 shots, 11 saves), Man: Hawryluk (L) (31 shots, 26 saves), Harkness (16 shots, 14 saves)

The Bisons did not have enough healthy players to ice a full line-up, and played one short. Dylan Thiessen then left early after a blocked shot, so they were down two players. Last week they had extra defencemen, in this game they were down to five. Rookie Eric Fawkes played his first game. Here‛s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
34 Hawryluk - 1 Harkness

Defence
4 Malchuk - 16 Hartje

27 Gottfried - 8 Toth

MOUNT ROYAL
Goal
35 Sims (33 Berry)

Defence
25 Aquilon - 5 Ladyman

3 Gould - 16 Blake

Forwards
13 Sawchuk - 23 Yarekmo - 12 Bouchard
19 Gillisss - 9 Regnier - 11 Fyten

28 Rawji - 14 Morrisseau - 26 Power

Scratches
3 Pow - 17 Tarzwell - 22 Hakim
27 Senkoe - 34 Farkas

The positive thing about this game is that the Bisons won‛t be playing at The Rink any more. From here on in they will be back at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Including the two exhibition games, the Bisons were 0-6-0 at The Rink.

If the Bisons want to pick up points in Edmontown next weekend when they face the Evil Monkeys, they will need some injured players back.

Quick Summary
Alta: T. Preziuso (03:17 1st) , J. Freadrich (10:23 2nd) , R. Hughes (05:35 3rd) , M. Fonteyne (11:24 3rd)

Goal: Alta: Kruger (24 shots, 21 saves), Reg: Meger (33 shots, 29 saves)

The Banjo-Cats were unable to pick up any points at home, and this has them in a tricky spot if they want to rally for a playoff berth. Tyler Preziuso‛s goal for the Evil Monkeys was his 8th of the season. It‛s peculiar that Regina still has not posted a review.

This series has an ominous feel to it. Although the Bisons split their last trip to Edmontown, they were crushed by MRU a week ago with a short-staffed lineup. The Bisons have to hope for a full roster. Neither side has posted a preview story.

The Bedrock Boys had been splitting every series until they swept Regina. They could win on any given night. Same for the T-irds, in a way. This is a scheduling oddity. In the days of an 8-team league the 1st half schedule was the mirror image of the 2nd half. Not now. These teams split a series in British California, the Dinos‛ win coming in overtime.

In last year‛s Battle of the Expansion Teams, Holy Trinity picked up a split. In fact, they closed the season playing better than The Family Guys. If Mac wants to make a charge for a playoff berth, they need a sweep in a series like this.

Goal: Man: Hawryluk (L) (32 shots, 26 saves), Harkness (11 shots, 10 saves), Alta: Schneider (18 shots, 17 saves)

The sparse Bison roster just did not look like the team they were, and that is likely because of the injuries. They were one man short and had just five defencemen. For good news, captain Geordie Keane played his first game of the year and the 3rd period was tied! THE Evil Monkeys were 3-for-7 on the PP, which got them off to an early lead.

This was a kooky game. The Banjo-Cats dominated the 1st period, outshooting the Banjo-Mutts 20-7 but leading just 1-0. The Canines outshot the Felines 23-11 over the last two periods to rally for the win. The game was tied 1-1 with just over 6 minutes to play when the floodgates opened. Saturday‛s rematch was to have been played in Saskatown but a watermain break has forced postponement of that one to November 29th.

After getting a break in last year‛s Covid schedule (where the T-irds played TWU six times), and getting a break this year (where the two teams they play just once are Alberta and MRU), UBC could have mounted a serious challenge by treading water against the CW middle powers. This series in the Town of Bedrock is an important one for UBC. The teams met earlier, and the standings are now 4 points for the Dinos and 3 points for the T-irds through three games. I was shocked at the margin. The Dinos outshot UBC 14-3 in the 1st period and led 4-0.

Holy Trinity hits the win column for the first time this season! From the little I saw of this game, the Mythical Mutants carried the play ever so slightly. But the Spartans were due for a win. This is a costly loss for The Family Guys. I blame Meg.

I was unable to watch this game so all I know is the statistical summary. The score was 3-1 entering the 3rd period. The Bisons switched starting goaltenders but once again did the mid-game yank thing.

The injured list would include: Liam Schioler (D), Mitch Dyck (D), Dylan Thiessen (F), 12 Zach Patrick (D), Tony Apetagon (F), and Linden McCorrister (F). Brett Murphy (G) may or may not be hurt as well.

The Bisons will return to the Wayne Fleming Arena next weekend.

The Dinos are #6 in both the OHT35 and the USports Top Ten. They started the season losing Friday and winning Saturday for three weekends in a row before sweeping Regina and UBC the last two weekends. That adds up to a 5-game winning streak entering the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bisons are on a 4-game losing streak. This followed a 4-game winning streak. The Bisons are playing at the Wayne Fleming Arena for the first time this season. Maybe this will change their fortunes. They were 0-6-0 at The Rink. Of major concern is the injury list. A full squad is essential if they want to be competitive in this series.

Last season these teams faced each other on the opening weekend in the Town of Bedrock, and split. The summaries and stories are in the links.

There are plenty of featured players to watch. The Bisons have three Top-20 scorers (Brett Davis, 6-8-14; Devon Skoleski, 4-9-13; and Chase Hartje, 4-8-12), and the Dinos have two (Jake Gricius 8-2-10 and Max Patterson 5-5-10).

It‛s the Battle of the Cougars, this time taking place in Calgary. The Bluegars are off to a good start. After being blitzed by the Evil Monkeys on the opening weekend they are 6-0-2. Meanwhile, The Banjo-Cats appear to have been unable to adequately replace the quality players who graduated last year. The Bluegars are ranked #9 in the OHT35 and #8 in the USports Top Ten.

The Banjo-Mutts have been putting together a very good season so far. They are #2 in the OHT35 and #4 in the USports Top Ten. Meanwhile, The Family Guys have managed splits against everybody from Alberta to Trinity Western. Although 5-5-0, their five wins have been nail-biters. They have three wins in overtime, one by a goal in regulation time, and one by two goals including an empty-netter. Meanwhile, they have 3 losses by 4 goals and 2 losses by 3 goals. While Mac has 10 points, their opponents have 13. This series could go a long way to determine whether they are contenders or pretenders.

This home-and-home Battle of British California is a series UBC needs to sweep. They are in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Holy Trinity finally broke into the win column against MacEwan a week ago. This series is going Thursday-Friday, so here‛s the report on game one:

Goal: TWU: Berkeliev (49 shots, 46 saves), UBC: Schwebius (25 shots, 25 saves)

Of note, the T-irds were 3-for-7 on the powerplay, and the Spartans were 0-for-8. Sometimes Holy Trinity can be chippy, but so too can UBC. The UBC goaltending has been shaky so they must be happy with the shutout.

This game was the 5th straight loss for the Bisons, all by wide margins. This is with a roster which, on paper, is better than last year‛s and comparable to many recent rosters. There was some line juggling in the 3rd period, notably Colton Veloso was removed from the top line in favour of Hayden Ostir. This was a good move. Veloso is either injured or not fit and has not been able to keep up with his linemates. Ostir was skating much better. Veloso can play a grinding role on another line, where he could be quite effective. Once again, a Bison starting goaltender did not finish the game, as Simon Harkness came on for Rosss Hawryluk to start the 3rd period.

The Bisons also had a full roster, so no excuses there.

There were three near-fights in the 3rd period in what was generally a cleanly-played game. This could lead to some fireworks in Saturday‛s rematch.

The Bisons made one line-up switch from Friday which I assume was due to injury. Defenceman Evan Toth was scratched, and they played with only five blueliners. I listed the combinations they used. Hartje and Schioler always played LD, and Stewart and Malchuk always played RD. Gottfried was the one who switched. I don‛t know if Fawkes hit the ice as a 13th forward. Bedrock U made one switch (Quigly for Horning on defence).

Ross Hawryluk played well in goal in the first two periods, backstopping the Bisons to a 2-1 lead with 34 saves on 35 shots. Unfortunately, the Dinos‛ 3rd period goals were tainted. The first was a slow trickler through the 5-hole, the second was a rebound on a dropped puck, and the 3rd was an empty-netter. The Bison offence was also limited, especially a powerplay with 5 minutes left when they trailed 3-2.

The line shuffling was fairly effective. Veloso 's line switch made him play better and improved the first line. He was still on the PP, and that needs some work before next week's MacEwan series which could be for a playoff berth.

The Bisons switched to their alternate gold/beige jerseys for this game. Those would be great if they had the logo, rather that the diagonal "BISONS" word-mark.

The Banjo-Cats, though swept, gave the Bluegars a good battle. There were long stretches where they had MRU reeling. But MRU has the blue chip players, and they made the difference. MRU‛s starting goaltender Riley Sims was injured early. I never heard the announcers say what actually happened to him.

This is a big series for the Bisons. The Family Guys have managed to split all six series played thus far, even when they play Alberta, Trinity, or anybody in-between. Their MO is win a squeaker in one game and get whipped in the other. The Bisons are on a six game losing streak. Last year, the Bisons won both games against these Mythical Mutants. This year, the Bisons also beat them in a pre-season game.

As usual, the Bisons have three players in the Top 12 scorers (Davis, Skoleski, and Hartje). The Mutants have no eye-popping numbers up front, but each side has scored 33 times this year.

Both #1 goaltenders are below league average. Mac‛s Ashton Abel is 6-4-0, 3.46 GAA, .898 S%. Manitoba‛s Ross Hawryluk is 4-6-0, 4.32 GAA, .892 S%.

This could be the series of the weekend. These teams have every opportunity of finishing in the top two, and the right to host a semi-final series. The Bluegars started the season being whipped twice by Alberta, but since then are 8-0-2. The Banjo-Mutts have been winning consistently all year, including an impressive 1-0-1 weekend against Alberta.

On offence, six of the CW‛s Top Twenty scorers will be involved. MRU‛s Sawchuk-Yaremko duo are tied for first with 22 points and linemate Connor Bouchard has 12 points himself. Sask has three players in the Top Ten (Hobbs, Dmytriw, Keeler).

In goal, Sask‛s Roddy Ross has the best numbers in the CW (6-0-0, 2.00 GAA, .933 S%). MRU‛s Riley Sims is not far behind (5-0-0, 2.06 GAA, .908 S%).

This is a rematch of last year‛s CW final. After this weekend, the T-irds‛ next opponent will be Mount Royal. UBC will have to pick up some points otherwise they might be looking to salvage a playoff berth rather than seek a bye through the quarter-finals. UBC sits dead-centre in the CW standings. Against the top half, they are 1-4-1. Against the bottom half, they are 5-0-1. The Evil Monkeys are on their usual roll. They have scored the most goals (60) and surrendered the fewest (25).

November 18, 2022: BISONS EMPHATICALLY END SLUMP

This was a much-needed slump-buster for the Herd. Three players had two goals each to lead the way to a convincing win.

Quick Summary
MacU: M. Pasemko (08:47 3rd)
Man: L. McCorrister (01:09 1st) , D. Skoleski (16:14 1st) , D. Skoleski (00:49 2nd) , C. Veloso (10:44 2nd) , B. Davis (13:20 2nd) , L. McCorrister (03:59 3rd) , C. Veloso (05:13 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Abel (L) (27 shots, 22 saves), Davis (14 shots, 12 saves), Man: Hawryluk (47 shots, 46 saves)

Not to downplay a near shut-out performance from Hawryluk, but that shot clock seemed inflated to me. The alleged combined 35 shots in the first period seemed excessive. Here‛s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
34 Hawryluk (1 Harkness)

Defence
16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk
27 Gottfried- 2 Stewart
5 Schioler - 6 Dyck

Forwards
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 11 Ostir
26 McCorrister - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
14 Keane - 28 Behun - 20 Apetagon
18 Hooker - 19 Arpin - 29 King

Scratches
35 Murphy - 8 Toth - 12 Patrick
13 Sutter - 21 Basarab- 23 Fawkes

MACEWAN
Goal
1 Abel - 33 Davis

Defence
25 Aston - 17 Roach
10 Salame - 13 Schaufler
3 Trott

Forwards
23 Gable - 26 Taupert - 27 Oszytko
22 Pasemko - 9 Webb - 19 Kope
12 McLean - 5 Chorney - 18 Correale
24 Mohr - 8 Boyle - 15 Wood

Scratches
2 Delorme - 4 Baker - 7 Comrie
11 Brown - 14 Smithies - 16 Strang
21 Appelt - 30 Parkinson

The Bisons are largely healthy now. Linden McCorrister came back last week, and scored two goals in this one. Back from the infirmary this week are Mitch Dyck on defence and Dylan Thiessen at centre on the 2nd line. I am not sure how many of the scratches were healthy, but this was the strongest Bison line-up dressed so far this season. Colton Veloso‛s shift to the 2nd line has paid dividends, as he also scored twice. That makes it a 4-goal game for the 2nd line. The 1st line wasn‛t bad either, with Devon Skoleski scoring twice and Brett Davis once.

Of note, the Bisons have now played twice in their alternate tan/gold jersey. There was also a very lively crowd, featuring the Engineers‛ Marching Band. They were at the hockey game from the mid-1st period and through the 2nd period. I am guessing they also graced the volleyball games with their presence. For some reason, they were razzing Abel and Davis about their water-drinking. "Abel‛s Thirsty, clap clap clap-clap clap" when he took a drink, and after each goal "Drink Some Water, clap clap clap-clap clap" followed by applause when he did so. I found it amusing.

The Bluegars are now on a 9-0-2 roll. Could this be their breakthrough season? The Banjo-Mutts seemed on the verge of a 1st place challenge after they beat the Evil Monkeys. This win moves MRU within one point of Alberta.

I was at the Bison game, but saw the ending of this on CWTV. The Evil Monkeys were down 5-0 but stormed back with some authority in the last 15 minutes of the game. All three goals were on the PP. Several other close calls could well have resulted in an all-time epic collapse. Like the Leafs in the playoffs! Big win on the road for the T-irds.

November 19: SWEEP VAULTS BISONS BACK INTO PLAYOFFS

This big showdown for a playoff berth turned into a romp. The Bison 6-game losing streak is now tucked into the past, and no giggity giggity for The Family Guys as their streak of 6-consecutive splits comes to an end.

Quick Summary
MacU: C. Roach (08:42 3rd) , D. Kope (17:07 3rd)
Man: D. Thiessen (00:33 2nd) , H. Ostir (05:37 2nd) , M. Dyck (12:20 2nd) , B. Davis (05:27 3rd) , B. Davis (11:21 3rd) , L. McCorrister (15:30 3rd) , D. Thiessen (17:37 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Abel (38 shots, 31 saves), Man: Hawryluk (29 shots, 27 saves)

The line-ups were changed only slightly from Friday. The Bisons subbed-in Evan Toth for Sam Stewart on defence, and kept the lines and pairings the same otherwise.

For the Mythical Mutants, centre Carter Chorney was injured on Friday and no replacement was available, so they had just 11 forwards and 5 defencemen. The defence had a 5-man rotation as they did on Friday. The forward lines were mixed and matched throughout the afternoon.

This marks the mid-point of the regular season for both sides. This was the Bisons‛ final home series of the first semester. They face Saskatchewan next weekend, then have a bye, then it is the exam/Christmas break. The next home games are January 6th and 7th against Regina‛s Banjo-Cats.

Of note, each CW team has two opponents they play just once. For the Bisons, those teams are MacEwan and Saskatchewan. This means that in the event of a tie with Mac in the final standings, the Bisons hold the head-on tie-breaker.

22-11-19-Mac-UM-Veloso-450x300.jpg

Colton Veloso has 3 goals and 3 assists in the 3 games since the line shuffling.

This was a matinee, so I was unale to catch any of it. Dino Jadon Joseph‛s goals at 13:29, 14:13, and 15:05 of the 2nd period set a CW record for the fastest three goals. Not Billy Mosienko, but impressive. That‛s 9 straight wins for the Bedrock Boys. Yabba dabba doo!

Goal: Sask: Ross (27 shots, 23 saves), MRU: Sims (21 shots, 20 saves)

This was a game of total dominance for MRU. They truly made the Banjo-Mutts look like a non-playoff team. The Bluegars are now on a 10-0-2 roll. Yaremko and Sawchuk had two goals apiece. The statistics do not do the second period justice. It was that one-sided.

Goal: UBC: Luding (L) (17 shots, 13 saves), Lane (29 shots, 24 saves), Alta: Kruger (23 shots, 22 saves)

The Evil Monkeys did not take Friday‛s loss lightly. They made the T-irds look like beer leaguers, and by mid-way through the 2nd period the T-irds were getting chippy. The T-irds took three penalties in the first half of the game but would up with 50 minutes, aided by a couple of 10-minute misconducts.

Comment: That Logan Lake team started out as respectable for a first year operation. But these recent scores make me say "Yikes!" They don't really have an operable website so there are no reports out there as to what sort of problems they may be facing.

Goaltending to start.

Their starter is a guy who played in one of the weaker Junior B leagues (NWJHL) in Alberta/BC and their backup last played for Queens in 1997. (That can't be right, can it?)

But basically, they don't seem to have any college-level players. They have a bunch of middling Junior B guys. Some of these players have no credits at all on Elite Prospects. This is not a good look for the league.

Mike Love was 30 years old when he played for Queens in the 1990s. Not the same guy.
