We'd probably do fine if we went with a consensus pulled from the media generally. Sad but true. The Lindy over Monahan questions are frustrating when they come up. Some teams had him higher than we had him, Flyers had him at the second overall pick. I don't remember anyone having Monahan above him. We didn't talk about him a ton because we didn't think he would be falling to us if I remember right. Fleury was right where he was supposed to be. The "bigs" year was the only truly stupid one. And any year we traded down.

I think my pondering is being misconstrued. I'm not asking about taking the higher-ranked prospect who is remaining to be selected. I'm asking about taking a prospect who has elevated his ranking as his draft approached. Angelo Esposito is a notable example of a faller. Jesperi Kotkaniemi is a riser. Nico Hischier was a riser, Nolan Patrick a faller.

An example would be a guy who started the year at #X, then at the halfway point had moved up 5 spots, then just before the draft had moved up another 6 spots....that sort of thing.

I think this is even more pronounced in the late 1st round and the mid-rounds. To wit...over the next few years one has to wonder about guys like Dominik Bokk, Jakub Lauko, Serron Noel, Jonny Tychonik, Jay O'Brien or Gabriel Fortier (or the combine favorite, Liam Foudy). All of these guys were progressive risers throughout the season, especially this past Spring.

Maybe you are on to something AD. From what I can tell, in the last 5 drafts, here was the top player from McKenzie's rankings still available when the Canes picked in the 1st round.

2013: Elias Lindholm
2014: 1) Nick Ritchie, 2) Haydn Fleury
2015: Noah Hanifin
2016: Jake Bean
2017: Martin Necas

So the Canes ended up picking the top ranked player on the board from McKenzie's rankings (which is a poll of scouts) in every draft the last 4 years, except for 2014 where they took the 2nd highest ranked player left on the board.

Maybe we're already doing this and our scouting department really consists of a drunk Joni Pitkanen firing off emails from his couch after every Karpat game.

I knew what you meant. Somebody, probably Cullen, looked into exactly what you're asking and found that late risers don't succeed any more often than others taken in the same spot and later fallers don't fail at any higher rate than the normal rate at that draft position.

Plain Red Hats sounds like a good name for a late 2000s rock band who became popular with some sappy ballad about a girl named Delilah, or something close to that. Then we never hear from them again but their song will always be around as long as receptionists at the dentist tune the radio dial to the soft rock channel .

They should partner with Red Hat downtown and make our draft hat a red fedora. Go full millennial on this *****

We can the hockey fanbase equivalent of those American soccer fans who fail miserably at making scarves look cool, except in this case it’s brigtly colored fedoras and there are no women around.
