With Washington too, they've shown they really can't compete with the top teams they've played. They're 20-32 against the top teams in the divisions, and the only one they have a winning record against is Arizona for some reason.

They're 10-15 vs. Atlanta and Philly. 2-8 vs. the Dodgers and Rockies. 2-5 vs. the Yanks and Red Sox. Now they still have 13 games with Atlanta and Philly left. But also they haven't played the Cubs and Cardinals at all yet, and they have more with Milwaukee and Colorado. Sure they also get lots of games vs. the Mets and Marlins, but given their inability to really compete with the better teams, how feasible is it that they go 32-16 down the stretch with that punching bag of a rotation outside of Scherzer?

The Nationals have to be considered one of the more disappointing teams in recent memory. All that great talent and don't have 1 World Series win or even an appearance to show for it. Got to think Harper leaves after this season as well.

Harper is probably gone but Nationals still have a pretty good team that could cmpete for postseason contention although their best days are probably behind them.

Murphy is a FA too, Strasburg is always hurt and going on 30. Soto and Robles could bump them back into contention and Scherzer is still controllable and elite although he's getting up there in age too.

What would you call more disappointing, though? What the Nats have managed to do (or not do)?

Or a team like Texas getting to consecutive World Series only to fall short both times? Essentially the Buffalo Bills of baseball.

It would be one thing if the Nats were 0-3 or 4....but 0-7?? That's brutal.

Similar run to the mid 90's/early 00's Astros but even they finally got over hump in year 7 to advance to NLCS and lost WS in year 8 of run while Nats are likely on decline

I cant think of team like Nats in recent memory with this much talent who couldn't build off it to even get past ALDS

Even teams like Twins or A's got to ALCS in early 00's

The Nats have never disappointed. Taking 108 years to win the World Series disappoints.

There's just so much hype. Harper is not a $400 mil player. Trout is not on pace to be the goat. Do math. Joe Morgan has more bWAR than Pujols. When Bonds left the Bucs after 7 years he had a 50 bWAR which is not a HoFer for an OFer. So much for his PEDs apologists argument. More fact, less fiction.

Bonds wasn't in his prime when he left Pittsburgh, but let's chalk it up to drugs!

The old farts from your era, like Aaron and Mays, certainly didn't take amphetamines by the fist full. No sir-e-bob.

It's only 0-4. 2012 vs Cards, 2014 vs Giants, 2016 vs Dodgers, 2017 vs Cubs.

Well, add in there they had a couple years where they SHOULD have made the playoffs but didn't. That in itself was major failure. And the series they have lost, in almost every case they were the favorite and had home field.

I really think there's no comparison. The point above on the Rangers making the WS twice and losing, sure they lost the WS but heck they got two pennants at least.

The Nationals haven't even won a single playoff series...remember when Rizzo made that snarky comment years ago when they were limiting Strasburg's innings? Said he wanted to save Strasburg cause they had many World Series runs in them, or something to that effect.

Still waiting for them to even win a division series...that's really remarkable with their talent that they haven't even been able to do that.

Even The Mariners, despite their lengthy playoff drought, have won 2 playoff series this millennium.

Oakland, for all their closeout game demons, did breakthrough in the division series at some point.

Hell, the Twins won an ALDS this millennium.

An absolutely laughable meltdown by Knebel and the Brewers are going to lose 2 out of 3 - at home - to the awful Padres. Wow.

Those last two teams did it against one another, so it doesn't count lol

the worst A's team of the 2000s to make the playoffs was the one that made it to the LCS

and that 02 ALDS still hurts
