Would like to use this thread to speak about cap implications, players leaving, coming, expansion among other things. Contract situations. I'll start. Richard Panik now has 15 goals and is an RFA. Toews wanted more consistent linemates but my gut tells me Panik is a goner.

I'd say it's pretty likely the Hawks will have a different goaltending tandem in 2017/18. So the question is whether the Hawks re-sign Darling meaning they trade Crawford for Cap relief, or they let Darling walk and get nothing in return. Darling has earned a substantial raise and even if the Hawks are fortunate enough to get Darling to sign a 2-3 year contract in the $3.5M-$4M range - that's still at least a $3M increase over the league minimum Darling makes this season. Adding that to the Cap along with Panarin's new contract ... well ... something has to give and the Hawks can't afford to have upwards of $10M tied up in goalies.

My guess is Kruger will be gone too, unfortunately that's the business of the game. That will save around $2M cap space delta between Kruger's $3.1M and his replacement on the roster.

Maybe a rookie or two makes the team with my guess at most probable being DeBrincat, Hayden and Fortin, in that order.

Is Hartman protected in the draft? If not, he could be gone as well if Vegas likes what theyve seen of him.

Panik isn't the type of guy that will draw an offer sheet and he has to know that if he asks for too much he will be traded. There is risk both ways for him. If he tries to maximize his salary now he will force a trade essentially and he could end up anywhere in who knows what type of situation or if he will play with any talented players. He will have no say on where to be and as a guy that has bounced around between, not just in the NHL, but between the NHL and AHL he may want the consistency if he feels comfortable in Chicago. He could sign a below market value deal to get him through just through RFA. If he takes a little less to stay he will have a chance to play top 6 minutes on a good team which will help his numbers leading into UFA.

Pretty sure that Kruger is out of next years roster. I don't see any big trades, if Panarin doesn't hit his bonuses.

I hope they re-sign both Panik and Kempny.

Panik knows his success is very tied to the Hawks and coach Q, who gave him oportunity and confidence, he won't be stupid to throw it away after one good season. Also the fact he is RFA makes negotations easier.

+1 to all points.

Moose will be re-signed too, with a good raise. Bump him to ~$750K.

Something has to give at keeper, obviously.

Does Soupy want to play another year? Other FA vets available on the cheap are Sharp and Oduya.

I agree Moose is likely back at about that salary.

They either trade Crow and re-sign Darling (difficult given NTC, other goalie starting options on market and limited timeframe) or they just roll with Crow and Johansson (or some other dirt cheap backup).

Soup looks like he can still play if he wants to. Probably have a better idea after the playoffs though. If they win another Cup, I could see him walking into the sunset.

I think Sharp and Oduya are wishful thinking. I too would love to see it, but not many guys are willing to do what Campbell did and leave millions on the table. Campbell at least had made a boatload of cash already. Sharp has certainly done well for himself and it could be an option there, but Oduya has never really cashed in during his career.

I'm expecting the cap to go up by roughly $1.5M
Kruger gets taken in expansion.
Some minor signings and there is some room left to add some cheap veterans for roughly $1M each.

Panik will get his $918,750 qualifying offer and that's what he will make. I'm sure Bowman may make it a clean $925,000 or even $950,000...

Desi will be re-signed strictly for the expansion draft. Highly doubt he makes next season's team. It'll be Hino. Shalunov's a C/RW. Hossa back on the first line? Like these lines better:

Schmaltz-Toews-Panik
Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
Hartman-Shalunov-Hossa
Kero-Ras-Hino

Anywho, the forwards are going into Q's blender, so this is simply an academic exercise.

I don't Panik sticking around

Also, Panarin's bonus has alot to do with if Krugers sicks around on this team.

I picture Kruger + 3rd going to Vegas for nothing

I can also see Campbell re-signing for around the same $ amount

Overall, I can see the following

Schmaltz - Toews - Hayden
Panarin - Anisimov - Kane
Hartman - Kero - Hossa
Motte - Rasmussen - FA

Keith - Hjalmarsson
Frosling - Seabrook
Campbell - TVR

Crawford

Overall, I expect alot of the same roster - with another rookie or 2

It never ceases to amaze me that GM's never offer sheet anyone because of some sort of "code" or unspoken agreement.

I will point out that according to Wikipedia, other teams can offer 1.205 on an offer sheet with no compensation. So you would think they would need to pay him that, but no GM will offer sheet anyone, so you might be right.

Call me weird but I expect Debrincat to stick for some reason.

Even if it is a 3rd line PP specialist role.

You are not alone.

I could see him playing with Toews and Panik next season while Schmaltz is between Hossa and Shalunov. Hartman, Kero and Hino could be very good fourth line.

I'm so excited of our younger players. They are outplaying guy like Krüger and I still think this team doesn't need Krüger-lite shutdown center. If Schmaltz and Kero could improve their FO%, this team is in good shape going next year.

Cat - Johnnie - Panik
Party
Shalunov - Schmaltz - Hossa
Kidline
Rasmussen

You can't blame Panik if he gets a big offer and leaves. However, I have a feeling we'll make it work for him by trading / shedding other contracts.

The key is that Panik wants to be here. Playing with Toews and his biggest hockey mentor / supporter / countrymen goes a long way.

Hartman, Forsling, Motte, Kempny, Hino and Schmaltz will all be here next year. I CAN'T say the same for Rozy, Desi, Tootoo, TVR, Kruger, or Pokka (TVR and/or Kruger are most likely gone). However, expect Panik and Moose to be here in 2017-2018 ... good chance Pokka gets his shot next year too.

I doubt Darling is here next year ... even though the goalie market is oversaturated. We can't afford to pay much more than the minimum for a backup goalie. I doubt we trade Crow unless we're forced to due to the cap. It is what it is.

Kempny?? Panik?? I know these guys are question marks due to contract reasons, but I'd imagine both are back next season.

Toews Panik Schmaltz
Panarin Anisimov Kane
Hartman Shalunov Hossa
Motte Ras Hino
Kero

Kero and Ras can basically be swapped out without any kind of drop in play/production.

Keith Hammer
Kempny Seabs
Forsling ?? Gus? Pokka?? TVR if he doesn't get grabbed in the expansion draft??

Dunno. The D is a huge question mark in comparison with the forwards. I think the forward group is pretty much locked in for the next couple seasons. With the exception of a guy or two leaving and a new kid coming up here and there.

I think ditching Kruger is the only major move we'll see. MAYBE if Crawford melts down in the playoffs but that hasn't happened in 5 seasons so I don't consider it likely

I think it has more to do with how few offer sheets actually succeed and go unmatched. GMs almost always match so if you sign an offer sheet more often than not you're just wasting your time during the busy free agency period. In the rare cases where a an OS might actually work the team holding the player's rights just trades him before free agency, ala Saad.

I think DeBrincat starts in the AHL and finishes in the NHL. He's a guy I think would actually do better in the NHL

I hope Hayden signs after his season is over. He intrigues me

I think the most important question is whether they plan to shift Schmaltz back to C next season. This club is very thin down the middle, especially if they have to move Kruger, but even if they don't. It appears all of the prospects are best suited on the wing. If he can play C, something like this would make a pretty good lineup:

Shalunov-Toews-Hossa
Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
Hartman-Schmaltz-Panik
Rasmussen-Kero-Hinostroza
cheap vet that can sit in press box, knowing Q's preference it will be a Tootoo type

Motte, Hayden, DeBrincat, Sikura in the AHL as depth

If Schmaltz (or Shalunov) isn't ready to play C next season there is going to be a huge hole in the lineup. Neither Kero or Rasmussen is good enough to fill that role. They would almost have to package a couple of the wingers to bring back a C.
