Interesting to note with the apparent emphasis on lower numbers both Corey Potter (#28) and Sheldon Brookbank (#33) have numbers under the magic number of 35. While other invites with NHL experience in Raphael Diaz (#36) and Trevor Gillies (#41) do not.

Corey Potter isn't an invite, he was signed to a two-way deal a while back.

Not a fan of the recent PTO contracts. I got over it though, because it doesn't necessarily mean we sign them. We already have a good amount of guys with "toughness". Hockey is moving forward in attempting to eliminate goons/fighting or whatever, but Calgary is haven for them or something. I don't really care as long as they can play hockey, fighting is meh..but if they can intimidate without fighting that is even better, they would be intimidated by the constant hitting. I would rather have players like Bouma/Bollig filling out the bottom 6. Rather guys who are just "tough"

Not saying I don't like fighting but I could care less if there is no fighting, hockey is still hockey and would continue to watch it.

I agree completely; what we need is a goalie who is better at dropping the gloves and face-punching for a teammate than stopping pucks. How bad has Emery become?

Except you're wrong.

You need toughness all over the ice and both at the NHL and AHL levels. We have toughness up front yes, but other the Engelland and perhaps Smid I wouldn't say any of our defensemen are really all that tough. Now don't get me wrong Gio is far from soft, but his game is not protecting the goalie, fighting and laying out hit after hit and while he can do that, it's better for us and him if that isn't his primary style of game. Wideman can hold his own too, but is a step below Gio and Smid. While Brodie and Russell and not exactly what I would call tough.

In ADK they are not very tough at all actually, on forward or defense. They may have Wolf and Ferland, but that's really about it. Unless you actually think college players like Van Brabant and Hathaway are actually going to make an impact, which they could but since I have seen then fight, I don't think that impact will be very much. So guys like Yonkman and Gillies could be quite valuable on the farm.

And the first cut of main camp has been made!

Eric Roy has been re-assigned to the Brandon Wheat Kings as per the Wheat Kings twitter.

I reiterate my statements of Roy over the past year or so. Roy is the worst defenseman in the organization. Being the first cut and being sent back to the WHL to be an overager tells me the organization does not feel much differently than I do, if at all.

His reason for being cut I would think is because of the injury he suffered during the first game of the Young Stars tournament.

Honestly, AF, I think his play spoke for itself in this last tournament. He was a guy who we thought had the chance to be a steal when drafted, given he had had success in the past but dropped big time in his draft year. Of course, any time you draft a guy in the fifth round, it's because there is a very good chance he never makes it. As a fifth rounder, it's a little bit disappointing that he virtually hasn't developed at all since being drafted, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Yep. I had high hopes for him personally. He needed to advance his defensive game by several levels in order to be considered a legitimate prospect, he didn't do enough last year to change that.

He's healthy enough to be sent down though, you cannot demote injured players. So they still aren't even giving him a look and sending him down to be an overager.

Since he has shown zero development of his defensive game I think it's time to convert him to a forward, I still think it's his only chance to have any sort of pro career.

I agree about toughness to an extent. You don't need goons, you need guys who can at least play hockey and fight or be aggressive only if they have to. Just inviting bigger guys does nothing for the team if they are complete ****. If they invited guys who were similar to Bouma and Bollig/Englelland then it wouldn't be a big deal, instead we are inviting goons and bigger guys who happen to be huge who probably can't skate.

Look at the Kings. They didn't have a goon, you might argue Clifford is one but at least he can play hockey and is a great 4th liner. He would be better if he didn't have to play 4th line because of the depth of LA.

I can understand about the the AHL, but for the NHL team it is not needed as greatly as you or Burke/Treliveing/Management is making it out to be. I agree we need to get bigger, but I rather bigger guys with some skill.

Just my opinion as your post is yours.

The only so called goon the Flames invited was Gillies. A player who in 12 games (regular season and playoffs) with the Heat had only 12 penalty minutes and no fights.

Calling a player a goon because they play a tougher game does not make them a goon.

Calgary is a team that isn't competing any time soon. Brian McGrattan is a decent fourth line player. No, he's not going kill penalties or contribute too much offensively, but he understands what type player he is and does his role effectively. He goes to the net, provides a good fore-check, and will drop his gloves whenever necessary. Enforcers are very well liked in the locker-room, and players play with more confidence knowing that someone is there to protect them.

McGrattan makes his presence felt. Many players are aware that he is the best fighter in hockey. His ability to throw those hard and and quick jabs makes him dangerous. And, many are aware that he doesn't fool around if he feels like his teammates are getting taken advantage of.

Abbotsford adds a veteran in Trevor Gillies. This takes a little pressure off of Ferland or other players.

I'm not sure if he's changed his game, but last I''ve checked Gillies is a goon. He's a useless hockey player imo (not that you said he was useful).

I also said he was the only one that was a goon. I said so called because I think it's a stupid term.

Mancina has been cut too as per Steinberg. Makes sense though, he wasn't going to make the team and is ineligible to play in the AHL.

Surprised Fram hasn't been cut too, I do believe he has a year of junior eligibility left.
