My impression was that the blues didn't really consider Grabovski last year. I'm not clear on the reasoning, and I know his wedding was probably a factor.....but I came away with the impression he isn't viewed as a good option.
I read that the blues simply didn't have interest in him.

I don't think Grabovski was an option last year because he didn't want to be an option for anybody. Him getting married threw a huge wrench into free agency for him. He wasn't really talking to anybody. Roy seemed liked a plan B option for me.

I don't get this. You don't have to talk to people. That's what agents are for. I guess he couldn't visit teams or talk with teams on the fence. Maybe the Blues were on the fence and wanted to talk about his comments after being released. He was busy and didn't do it. I guess it would suck to plan this big event on an off-season while you are under contract, then suddenly you have no contract. On the other hand, the $14 million Toronto will be paying him over the next 8 years is nice.

Sorry, I don't get the Grabo love going on here. Roy has been more productive over his career. while he wasn't a defensive stud, he is actually better defensively then Grabo. I would much rather have Sobi on that line then Grabo.

There is a reason he was dumped and there was little interest in him last year. IT wasn't just the Blues, there was really little interest in him.

The grass isn't always greener. I am not sure he is an upgrade on Berglund as a center. Production is pretty similar. And no interest in adding Kuli. We need to get Jaskin legit playing time. Berglund and Sobotka on the 3rd.

If we are looking for a center with size, then Bolland makes sense, if we can't get Stas or Legwand.

Other then that, I think I would give Sobi another year between Tank and Schwatz.

Roy's peak was better than Grabo's, but Grabo is all around better than Roy. He's better offensively than Sobotka, and comparable defensively.

If Sobotka is the center between Schwartz and Tarasenko next year, we are going nowhere. I absolutely love Sobotka, but he is not a second line center. We absolutely have to get a high quality center to take the offensive load off of Backes. The only reason Grabo got "dumped" was because Toronto management are idiots. Roy is useless now. He's never been good defensive forward. He made it to the NHL on his offensive production alone. He's a terrible defender, small, and easily pushed around. Grabo is a much better overall player at this point. I'll agree that at his peak, Roy was better, but at this point he's a small power play specialist.

I have been saying for 5 years that the Blues need a true playmaking number one center and I am usually dismissed by some know it all on the forum. Now there are full threads dedicated to it. How ironic.

What forum have you been reading...many have been saying a deal for a top six center was needed.

Let's assume you don't land Statsny, Sharks offer two packages:

1) Pavelski, Demers for Shattenkirk, Sobotka and Rattie
2) Thornton for Sobotka and Rattie

(Demers gives you a top 4 dman who can play the PP - not at Shattenkirk's level, sure)

I'd say either of those Cs than any mentioned above.

And I'd counter Pavelski+Demers+pick/prospect for Shattenkirk+Berglund+Carrier...oh wait.

Definite no to the first one. The second one I'd think about.

Is Rattie the back breaker? It could be another prospect. I thought Shattenkirk + a decent fwd prospect for Pavelski was fair and then Demers (a RH #4 dman) for Sobotka (a 3C) was fair.

It's not that the Thornton deal is bad value wise for us at all. It's actually a solid deal. I just really don't want to get an older center. I want to get someone that's young enough that we can keep them around for a while.

I thought you said no to Pavelski + Demers for Shattenkirk, Sobotka and Rattie. Which deal are you nixing?

I was talking about the one that was Thornton for Sobotka and Rattie.

Got it. I'll think about what the + would be for a Rattie, Berglund + for Thornton deal.

How about the Pavelski deal? Any interest in that one? I was trying to balance it out with Demers since it seems you Blues fans are understandably concerned about losing Shattenkirk.

Army isn't going to move Rattie or Jaskin for Thornton. I still have full confidence in him not trading certain prospects.

Yeah, like 1223 said, i really don't see us moving Rattie or Jaskin. And I just don't think we'll be moving Shattenkirk right now. Pretty much all the talk about him has come from Blues fans just spitballing.

I think it is safe to assume that Armstrong will be more aggressive to get that center, but if he learned anything from the Miller debacle, he still needs to stay disciplined.

This could turn into a situation where we know we will be a top regular season team, so if the right player isn't available in the summer, Army could wait until the trade deadline. Whether it's good or bad, that's how we got Bouwmeester.

I don't really know how to break it down like that. Seems like a pretty good shot to be a top 6 forward. I guess a very good forward would be definite 1st line fwd who's sure to net 0.75PPG or more.

I just think we won't be seeing eye to eye depending on how you value Rattie. Rattie has just as much value as Jaskin in our eyes. He's not just some mid throw-in prospect.

Is it too soon to be thinking about who might be available at the next deadline? ;)
