Also, the Horizon Precision Drive's gate is nowhere near strong enough to stand alone. My Boss gate will have to come back from the garage. The boost through it is amazing going through the mini recto and 212 vert cab. So toight. So very toight.

@slocal @Pavelski2112 do you guys gig? or just play for fun?

A 2024 goal of mine is to play more bass, ideally with people lol. Like, i want to get to the point where i can justify buying a better bass (i'm a lefty and options are limited on the low end) but like, I can't see the need if i'm just playing at home

I used to play a lot more but I've been doing more live sound/recording instead lately. Still the odd gig here and there.

What do you have right now? Honestly with a good enough setup, you can get away with a pretty solid bass for cheap. Most of the basses I use when I gig cost me ~$500 or less.

I'm far too shy to gig, but I will annoy the neighbors with gusto! In my youth, I was in a garage band. We played mostly Porno for Pyros and Jane's Addiction along with our own songs that went in a sort of 311-minus-the-rap direction.

My philosophy is to buy what makes me happy. This is, or course, within reason. If a new piece of gear gets me excited to play more, it's justified its purchase. You go get that bass that feels right in your hands.

I have an old Ibanez SR250L (i dont think they make those anymore) in America, and an even lower model Ibanez here in Bangkok. My issue is not only finding a shop that carries Lefty basses, but also finding like a mid-tier model. $500 would be acceptable honestly but I've never actually seen for sale. For example, here is the Guitar Center options (assuming this is nationwide) Left-Handed Electric Bass | Guitar Center

Nice. I used to gig in college a bit. I was in a band with an average guitar player but he was super motivated to write (bad) music, pay for recordings, and book gigs, so those were fun coattails to ride for a few semesters. But since then i just play alone and maybe jam with buddies when i can (but being a lefty means I always need to bring my bass places).

I've always wanted to get a Musicman, either a Stingray or Bongo. My highschool had a Stingray as the stock bass for music classes, but even though it was a righty it felt great and I felt i had more finger control with the humbuckers (obv not unique to Musicman). BUT to get one of those i think i'd have to order custom haha.

I think if i found the right bass and had the Harry-Potter-Wand moment, i'd probably splurge

Whoa, you made it to recordings? Even if the music was bad, that's still a pretty cool experience. I've always wanted to have some studio time, even with my mediocre abilities.

Ernie Ball makes their basses over here in San Luis Obispo (the "slo" in my username). I knew a few guys who worked there way back in the day. They took a lot of pride in their work and EB is definitely a source of pride in the area.

You obviously will be the only one who knows what feels right in your hands. Looking at Thai shops that have an online presence, there seems to be a heavy bias to guitars. That's gotta make it tough unless you REALLY want a Schecter (going by Guitar Center's stock).

Oh dang, some of those lower end Ibanez models are actually pretty great for the price. The active EQs as well; that helps a lot.

Musicmans are so killer; just an incredibly unique sound that's as punchy as anything that's not a Wal (for exponentially less money). I have the SUB Ray4 because I could never justify buying a legit MM but even that was an amazing deal for the price.

Yea tons of great guitar shops here, but even then most stores don't carry lefties haha. But they do excellent setups etc for cheap. In that sense i'm lucky

That's cool about EB, I didn't know it was a SLO brand. in like 2009 I almost pulled the trigger on a burnt orange Bongo 5 for ~$1000. I was 18 and that was like all my money so i didnt do it. Now they are way more. oh well.

Re: recording - yes, very cool experience. We probably did 4 sessions and got a few masters out of it, but I actually dislike my playing on it hahah.

I like my SR250L actually, but since I bought a bass here I can only play it when im at home. I like playing "lead bass" that's improv heavy, so having 24 frets was a bonus. Incidentally, having the 24th fret helped me memorize the fretboard much easier as well.

Have you every played/heard a Modulus Quantum TBX? Those punch really hard (but are also like 8k haha).

I've never played a Modulus, but I have a Zon Legacy Elite from ~1987 that also has a graphite neck. That thing is unbelievably punchy as well. Bartolini pickups into a Polyfusion preamp iirc. Instant Faith No More circa Angel Dust/King For A Day.

Good point about recordings; I'm super glad there is no proof of my mediocrity so I can always tell my kid I used to be better when I was younger :laugh:

hell yea. I've never been a Faith No More guy but i'm getting a similar bass tone/vibe as Mark Sandman, and I dig Mophine a lot.

lol yea it's always a gamble when I say I have recordings from college in the off chance someone wants to hear them. I was in an a cappella group too and we recorded a CD that was much much better, so I give them that instead.

Oh hell yea, fantastic band. I bought a cheap bass a number of years ago and modded it to have two strings and be played like a slide for a Morphine tribute set me and a few friends did once. A buddy of mine still has that bass lying around.

I'm a big Full Metal Jacket fan. I guess I'm a Kubrick fan too. A Clockwork Orange... The Shining... 2001: A Space Odessey... Dr. Strangelove... Lolita... Spartacus... all of those are so good. I think The Shining was probably my fave of the bunch, but it's hard to pick. I wasn't a huge fan of Eyes Wide Shut but it wasn't awful.

For whatever reason that scene jumped into my head from the "caveman" thing. Or, did you mean the Geico Caveman?
