Last game was the first game for Zdeno Chara from 11.02.2010 with 6 PIM.

Only the second game in last 12 years with 6 PIM.

When we consider the fact, that he has more than 1400 games in regular season and more than 1800 PIM, it is a curious fact.

It’s PIM.

Penalty Infraction Minutes.

I thought this thread was about early start times for games. ;)

I never heard it as penalty infraction minutes, although it would make sense.

99% of the sites show it as penalties in minutes.

what's the alternative penaties in seconds or hours ?

and if chara sits two for interference and the bruins get scored on one minute in, his PIM is still 2 minutes despite only serving one, right ?

It's given in minutes as a way to amalgamate all penalties. It is a better representation of the seriousness of the penalties taken, rather than just recording the number of penalties.

Getting "five for fighting" is then recorded as 5 "PIM's" instead of just one penalty. That way it doesn't look the same as just some minor for slashing.

then why no simply keep track of minors and majors ?
again you serve all 5 for a major , but if chara sits two for interference and the bruins are scored on 60 seconds in, what value is shown for chara ? I always assumed that it was 2.

Should’ve been two.

Stripes put him in the box once because Stone? tripped himself into the boards.

Another because he got angry and was scaring people. Chara can still smash when angry. Had a juice box. Nice little rest. Calmed down after that.

Still a bs call

You can find places that track each separately, if you really want it. I'm just telling you why it's given in minutes. It's the only way to put all penalties in the same bucket.

And yes, the value recorded stays the at 2 minutes, even if there is a goal while in the box. Does the seriousness of a slash or hook change if there is a goal? No. So the recorded penalty shouldn't be worth less. The infraction was worth 2 minutes, the time sitting in the box is irrelevant.

Same idea when a goalie gets a penalty, and someone else serves the time in the box. You count the minutes against the goalie, not the guy sitting. The act of sitting in the box is irrelevant.

This isn't even true. He's had more than 2 games with 6 PIM in the last 12 years.

Even if it was true, this is a pretty odd thing to create a thread over. Are we really shocked that a player took exactly 3 minor penalties in the same game twice during a specific span? Sure he's played 1400 games and has 1800 PIM in his career but that's irrelevant since you're not using his whole career.

so then shouldn't the term be " PAIM" penalties assesed in minutes ? Because saying that penalties in minutes, when its not a reflection of how long they were off the ice ( or whether there were coincidental penalties) seems intentionally misleading.

And if its isn't a reflection of year long stats, a guy with 10 pim at some point in the season, I have no way of telling if he got five minors, two majors or a misconduct. so I'm not sure WHY you would want to put them in the same bucket, and if you did I don't see how PIM is any more informative that " penalty minutes"

You mean just minor penalty minutes right? He's definitely had games where he's gotten into a fight and gotten a penalty

You're making this way too complicated.

People know what they are looking at when they see a PIM column. If they want the level of detail you're asking for, they can go to NHL.com and find that information separately.

yeah I know what PIM stands for, but what does the "I" add? saying he had 6 penalty minutes conveys the exact same info ( even if its not a reflection of how long he stayed ion the box).

it seems that its " PIM" because its always been PIM. I also thought that it might stand for penalty infraction minutes, which is equally redundant.

I mean, let's not act like he hasn't been given favourable attention from officials for that duration.

But ok. He tends not to do blatant stuff out there that often.
Seriously?

If I could find the clip of it I would. But I still remember the game after he hurt Paciorrety he got a penalty for boarding a guy from damn near the middle of the ice.

Every veteran gets a little leeway from the stripes after a while. But he leads the decade for being stronger than the other guy penalties and it’s not even close

It took like 2 minutes of research to determine this entire thread is a lie. Not only has he done this more than twice in the last 12 years, he did it twice is one season. For a guy who has averaged one minor penalty every 2.5 games during this span or 29 minor penalties a season, is it really impressive to only receive 3 minors is the same games 4 times in 12 years?

11/20/06 he had 3 minors for 6PIM
2/11/10 he had 3 minors for 6PIM
3/21/10 he had 4 minors for 8 PIM
10/23/18 he had 3 minors for 6PIM

Oh, sure. I mean, why not go all the way and let's start picking on every single acronym in hockey? Maybe we can add a column for you for "time in box" and call it TIB? And TOI doesn't need three letters for "time on ice", why can't we just say IT for "Ice time"? And why stop at hockey? We could endlessly and pointlessly debate what a GIF should be called. That would be fun.

Or maybe you're being intentionally picky. You asked why it was in minutes, and I told you. You asked why they're not split into major and minor, and two people said you can easily get that elsewhere. You suggested the important thing is time in the box, and I explained why that would be meaningless.

I'm done here.

Yeah, has to be because otherwise the stat the OP posted is inherently and provably wrong.

Just with a tiny little bit of research you can find these:

Zdeno Chara 2008-2009 Regular Season Fight Card - hockeyfights.com

Zdeno Chara 2011-2012 Regular Season Fight Card - hockeyfights.com

Instigators and misconducts alone are more than 6PIM

This is the best.

You guys win the thread.

You're probably right that it's PIM because it's always been PIM.

It hasn't been reformed because there's no point in reforming it. People know what the statistic stands for, and they're typically not interested in knowing exactly how long a player sat in the penalty box.

The irony of bringing up the Pacioretty incident while highlighting Chara not getting favourable attention is strong.
