Werenski currently has 11 goals and leads the league in goals scored by a defenseman. He also only has 10 assists.

Since the 1954-55 season only 5 dmen have led the NHL in goals scored by a defenseman while also having fewer assists than goals. Can you name them?

I'll guess Burns and Boyle and after that I'm out. Fun fact also since his debut only Burns and Karlson have more goals.

Side note apparently leading the league in goals for a defenseman isn't enough to stop the powerhouse Letang from making the all-star team.

Not to be hijack the thread, but I didn't realize Burns was only 4 back of the goal scoring lead for defensemen. I guess it's just a low scoring year for defensemen and goals!

To answer the question, I don't know a single defenseman who led the NHL in goals by a D and had more goals than assists. Somebody else mentioned Burns but he definitely never has. Sheldon Souray is one name I might guess.

Adrian Aucoin did it in 1998-99

Burns, Boyle and Souray have never done it.

Has OEL done it? Idk

Yes Ekman-Larsson is the most recent player to do it in 2014-15

Gonchar is one I believe.

Gonchar had 21 goals and 10 assists in 53 games the same year that Aucoin (23 goals) accomplished this. If he had played the full season he most likely would have outscored Aucoin.

Mohns never did it. The last 3 players are pretty difficult so I will give some hints:

2002-03 season with the Predators
1967-68 season with the Rangers

The final player accomplished this 4 times between 1954-1959 with the Blackhawks and Red Wings

On pace for twice as many goals and way less assists. Probably has to do with Columbus scoring .41 less goals per game this season.

Hockey- Reference lists Reggie Fleming as a LW for the '68 season so I'm wondering if he actually counts

McIntyre is also listed at wing in the seasons in question

Good catch. Fleming and McIntyre were the last 2 that went unguessed

On nhl.com they were listed as Dmen those seasons. If true that Fleming and McIntyre played wing during those seasons then this has only happened 3 times since 1954-55.

Injuries to key players and the PP last year being hit and this year being miss is a big reason for that. Also injuries caused Torts to change to even more def focus and Werenski and Jones habe been reigned in a little to focus on being solid.

Before that Z was on a tear. Jones has been hot since the change. Just a fun fact.

I am not surprised, last time I watched CLB his shot looked electric. It seems to have taken a big leap this offseason. Quite the weapon!

in 2017-2018 he had more assists than goals, but it's nice to know that at some point in that season, some random point in that season, he had more goals than assists.
