The best Czech hockey journalist Robert Záruba says in the podcast that the Czech NHLers do not avoid using drugs while having summer vacations in their homeland. He talks about the latest case of Robert Kousal (cocaine), which is not confirmed yet, but all media talk about it.

Q: So, it is not only about Kousal ... but also other Czech clubs & players?
Záruba: Here I would point out the role model by the best NHL players, who do not avoid using lighter drugs while having summer vacations in their homeland. (...) it is not normal to use cocaine, but we can not pretend it is not happening. I know that many players (not explicitly NHLers) use cocaine from time to time while having summer training sessions.

time 12:30 here (in Czech)

Lol this has been going on since 1980s.

Are people shocked that out of a bunch of pro-athletes making millions some like to party? Hockey seems to be a sport where the ultra talented can get away with less than perfect work out routines and conditioning.

He later says that using drugs has a much bigger tradition in the NHL while being much more often & serious problem here than in the Czech league.

I love the caveat of "lighter" drugs, lol. leaves it wide open for interpretation.

It's funny how many people turn a blind eye to this stuff, though. Plenty of threads where people talk about how there's no room in the NHL for mistakes with health and nutrition.

This statement can be applied to NHL'ers of all nationalities. Non-story.

Didn't fellow Czech countryman Jiri Hudler get thrown off a plane for demanding drugs from an attendant?

Edit: Just looked, and did he ever:

Airline: NHL's Jiri Hudler demanded cocaine and tried to pee on food cart on flight

According to a report from a Czech newspaper, the Delta Airlines flight staff on that trip has accused Hudler of having a belligerent outburst on the plane in which he demanded cocaine from a flight attendant. That flight attendant assumed Hudler's request for "coke" was in reference to the soda, but he allegedly further clarified that he was in the market for the white powder.

When the flight attendant refused his request (shocker), the 33-year-old Hudler allegedly became incensed and threatened the woman, telling her that he would have his friends kill her upon arrival in Prague. On top of that, Hudler is also accused of doing cocaine in the plane's bathroom and then attempting to urinate on a food cart. (It's very confusing why he wouldn't just pee in the bathroom if he was already in there doing cocaine, but that's neither here nor there.)

lol never knew that abour Jiri

Yeah it's pretty aggressive. The fact he was doing it in the bathroom also means he wanted it enough that he was willing to go through airport security with drugs on him. Bold move Jiri. And he always seemed so quiet when he played on the Flames.

It's not like you have to be the best player to play in NHL. I'm sure there is couple of top 600 sprinters and swimmers too who do drugs.

Cocaine, who cares.

Tell me when they start doing meth and other drugs of the same ilk, or if they're doing bumps during intermissions and then I'll consider it an issue.

It's pretty hilarious how much the attitude towards cocaine has changed in the past 30 years. When I was a teen in the 90s, it was considered a "hard drug" up there with heroin.
