I'm bored on my lunch break, and the thread about who is the biggest draft steal of all time got me wondering about every team's best late-round picks. Post your favorite team's best roster of players drafted by that team pick 100 or later. Here is my quick stab at a Sabres roster. I didn't put any thought into line positions or ranking. The numbers in parentheses are the draft numbers. I know teams like Detroit will destroy this roster (except maybe in goal)

Marcus Foligno (104) – Brandon Hagel (159) - Victor Olofsson (181)
Ales Kotalik (164) - Derek Plante (161) – Donald Audette (183)
Randy Cunneyworth (167) – Christian Ruutu (134) – Nathan Gerbe (142)
Paul Byron (179) - Paul Gaustad (220) – Pat Kaleta (176)
Ken Baumgartner (245) – Brian Holzinger (124)

Brian Campbell (156) – Sean O’Donnell (123)
Dennis Wideman (241) – Shane Hnidy (173)
Uwe Krupp (214) – Joe Reekie (119)
Nathan Paetsch (167)

Ryan Miller (138)
Linus Ullmark (163)
Steve Shields (101)

Man, I don't even think you CAN make a team for my team using this, and that's even with some great picks that would qualify (Slavin, Andersen, Legace, Joe Reekie, Espen Knutsen)

edit: best stab at this:

Jaro Svoboda (208) - Espen Knutsen (204) - Steven Lorentz (186)
Michel Picard (178) - Randy Gilhen (109) - Chris Terry (132)
Ken Belanger (153) - Byron Ritchie (165) - Craig Adams (223)
Scott Daniels (136) - Clark Bishop (127) - Shane Churla (110)

Jaccob Slavin (126) - Joe Reekie (124)
Nolan Pratt (115) - Michal Jordan (105)
Brett Bellemore (162) - Steve Halko (225)

Freddy Andersen (187)
Manny Legace (188)

Jackson Blake (109) will probably be on this list eventually

some near misses that would have been great adds: Nic Roy (96), Nic Wallin (97), Shane Willis (88), Sami Kapanen (87), Josef Vasicek (91)

Going only by guys I saw play:

Brian Savage (171) Craig Conroy (123) Oleg Petrov (127)
Sergei Kostitsyn (200) Darcy Tucker (151) Michael Ryder (216)
Charles Hudon (122) Mikhail Grabovski (150) Brendan Gallagher (147)
Jake Evans (207)-Paul Dipietro (102)-Joshua Roy (150)

Andrei Markov (162) Mark Streit (262)
Lyle Odelein (141) Sean Hill (167)
Brett Clark (154) Stephane Robidas (164)

Tomas Vokoun (226)
Halak (271)
Cayden Primeau (199)

Plenty of strength in net, and offense on D. Lack of high-end forwards is compensated by great depth.
Going farther back would mean adding McPhee, Kurvers, Acton, Fetisov, Nilan....

You're selling your team short by cutting it off in the Avalanche era. The Nordiques had some late round steals.

Pretty good top line, but beyond that and Ronning, it ain't lookin too good. Defense is awful. With goaltending it's hard to tell because Hofer hasn't had a ton of games.

The 4th line will murder you.

I'll base it on when I started to really follow and understand hockey, so about 1987 and beyond?

Ryan Malone - Max Talbot - Josh Archibald
Shawn McEachern - Jan Hrdina - Michel Oullet
Matt Moulson - Joe Vitale - Tom Kuhnhackl
Dominik Simon - Sam Lafferty - Tom Kostopolous

Jake Muzzin - Rob Scuderi
Michal Rozsival - Ian Moran
Andrew Ference - David Koci

Patrick Lalime
Chad Johnson

Not ... good overall. Good at LW and decent depth on defense, but pretty shit everywhere else.

Managed to scrap together somewhat of a respectable D group and a solid crop of wingers, but the C and G lack of talent are embarrassing :help:. What's worse is OP's Sabres and my Canucks joined the league in the same year, but there's a clear lack of drafting success for depth players. Hope Allvin can change that.

You didn't specify whether or not the player, upon being picked, had to have actually played for our team. So...

Sergei Mozyakin (263) ;) - Dmitry Voronkov (114) - Cam Atkinson (157)
Matt Calvert (127) - Lukas Sedlak (158) - Jared Boll (101)
Lasse Pirjeta (133) - Emil Bemstrom (117) - Derek Dorsett (189)
Jaroslav Balastik (184) - Andrew Murray (242) - Carson Meyer (179)
Lennart Petrell (190), Trey Fix-Wolansky (212)

Vladislav Gavrikov (159) - Marc Methot (168)
Markus Nutivaara (189) - Grant Clitsome (271)
Petteri Nummelin (133) - Dalton Prout (154)
Brent Regner (137)

Anton Forsberg (188)
Tomas Popperle (131)

I considered listing Pirjeta on two different lines for @Double-Shift Lasse's sake but restrained myself.
Near-misses I thought I could count on but couldn't include David Savard (94), Josh Anderson (95), and Oliver Bjorkstrand (89). EDIT: Daniil Tarasov (86) was also closer than I expected (I thought he'd been picked higher) but still not within reach.

All in all, not too bad. I knew defense and the wings would be stronger than centers and goaltending. I tried to keep positions and handedness correct for the most part.

If you include late round picks when the NHL had less teams, you could also add Billy Smith (5th round) in net and Butch Goring (5th round) up the middle. Smith would turn goaltending from a weakness into a strength especially with Huet as a solid backup. Without Goring, I had to move Stevens into the middle to avoid Nic Dowd in the top six.

Wouldn't you want to split up Zetterberg and have him on the 2nd with Helm on the 3rd considering he did play a good amount of time as centre?
